This invention relates to an improved supporting arrangement of the valve controlling gear of internal combustion engines.
It is well known to support the valve gear a box-like structure arranged above and spaced from the cylinder heads.
The main obj ect of the invention is to provide such a construction that the forces transmitted by each valve and valve controlling member shall be uniformly distributed throughout the whole of the construction.
The invention mainly consists in supporting all the valve controlling members of all the cylinders, with the exception of push rods, tappets and the cams which operate the tappets of the valves, by a hollow box-like member or frame which is separate from the cylinder heads and to which all the supports of the valve gear and guides of the valve stems aresecured, the said supports and guides being also attached to the cylinder heads.
The supporting hollow frame may be made of cast or wrought iron, preferably of comparatively thin iron sheeting.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate by way ofexample, one mode of carrying the invention into effect,

Figures 5, 6 and 7 are respectively a sectional elevation, an end view and a plan view of one of the rocker shaft supports.
In the drawings a is a box-like frame comprising an upper plate al, a lower plate a2 and a peripheral plate a3 which are secured toat a4. The upper plate a1 is formed with openings b1, b2 for the reception of the inlet and exhaust valve spindle guides, openings 01, 02 for the reception of the guides of the inlet and exhaust valve push rods operating on the rockers d andopenings e for the reception of supports carrying theV spindle on which the rockers are mounted, the plate a1 being formed with f flanges surrounding the said openings. The lower plate a2 is similarly formed withkcorresponding lower openings and flanges sur-4V rounding the same.
The box-like frame a supports all the valve controlling members, with the exception of the cams which operate the push rods of the valves, viz the spindle f which carries the rockers Z the push rods g for operating the rockers l which push rodsv are guided in 02 and are operated by the exhaust cams mounted in the crank casing; the spring controlled exhaust valve stems a5 guided in B2 and operated by the rockers Z the spring controlled inlet valves guided in B1 and the corresponding push rods guided in members mountedV in the openings c1. The exhaust valve push rod guides c2 are formed with upper and lower shoulders c3 and c4 abutting against the plates al and a2 respectively, the inlet valve push rod guides (not shown on the drawing) being provided with similar shoulders.
As will be seen from Figure 2 the guides B1, B2 of the inlet and outlet valves are ser' cured to the cylinder heads H partly by screwing, as indicated at i, and partly by edge welding ter edge welding extending to the cover c of the cylinder casing. y The `said guides B1, B2 as well as the guides of the push rods acting on the rockers are secured to the flanges formed on the plates al, a2 of the box-like frame a, around the corresponding recesses by edge welding as indicated at 'Z (see Figures 1 and 2). p
The spindle f carrying the'roclrers CZ which are acted upon by the valves is supported by hollow cylindrical members fm mounted in the recesses e pro vided in the plates al, a2 of the box-like supporting frame a. The members m abut against the under surfaces of the plates a1, a2 by means of annular shoulders m1, m2, being edge-welded to the flanges which project on the outer surfaces of the said plates and surrounding the recesses e. rIhe boxlike members m are provided with a hollow as indicated at j, the lato the push rods and operate extension n followed by a bearing support frame agbeing suitably secured thereto at 7"A so as to form a tight enclosure whichis lil-led with lubricating oil. The cover s of the casing g is suitably held in position such as by means of screw nuts t secured to the externallyscrew threaded part u provided at the ups per extremity of'some of the members m.
Referring to Figures l and 2 it will be seen that a heat insulating layer voi' air o is left betweentliecylinders andthe valve controlling mechanism.

What I Vclaim is:
1. A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine comprisinginicombination'with a'pluralityrof cylinders and with the valves, and the valve controlling gear ofi-the engine, a hollow box-like lmember separate from the heads of the cylinders and supporting substantially-the whole -o'f the controlling gear, supports and guides -f'forr'the valves secured to the said hollowrbox-like member and tothe cylinder 'heads,.so=as tospace the former from p the latter at a distance apart from one an` other such that a heat insulating layer of air is formed between `the box-like member and the cylinder heads, as set forth.

A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine as claimed in claim l and in which the valve controlling gear includes rockersa'nd tappetsacting on the rockers and the hollow box-like member is made of sheet iron plates and has guides for the said tappets, which guides are ed e-welded to the upper and lower plates o the box-like member, as set forth.

A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine as claimed in claim'l and in which the valve vcontrolling gear includes Vrockers and tappets acting, on the rockers and thehollow Y box-like member'is made of sheet iron plates and has guides edge-welded to the upper and lower plates of the box-like member and annular shoulders lying within the box-like member against the upper and lower plates Vof the latter, as set `forth.
