Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. FIELD, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines.
The main objects ofthis invention are:
First, to provide in, an internal combustion engine an improved valve actuating mechanism which is easily assembled and disassembled'and is readily accessible as oocasion requires.
Second, to provide in an internal combustion engine of the multiple cylinder type an improved means for supporting the valve actuating mechanism.
Third, to provide in an internal combustion engine having a plurality of opposed horizontally disposed cylinders an improved valve actuating mechanism.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. a I
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of myinvention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure I is a side elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invention.

In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the engine body generally. The structure illustrated has a plurality of cylinders 2 disposed horizontally and in opposed rela tion, the structure illustrated having two pairs of opposed cylinders. The body is shaped to provide a housing or chamber 3 between the cylinders and extending over the cylinders at 4.
The top 5 is removable. The manifold 6 has an inlet passage 7 and an exhaust passage 8.. As the details of the manifold form no part of this invention they are not further illustrated or described herein.
9 is one of the cylinder valves arranged with its stem 10 projecting into the housing. The coiled seating spring 11 is arranged in the housing'to engage the pin 12 on the valve stem so that it urges the valve toward its seat.
The cam shaft 13 is centrally disposed between the opposed cylinders. Above this cam shaft is a supporting frame or spider 14. having ears 15 and 16 at its corners through which the rods 17 are disposed.
These rods are removably arranged through the housing toengage the ears 15 and 16. The ears 16 are split to receive the clamping bolts 18 by means of which the supporting frame is adjustably secured upon the rods or is secured in its adjusted positions thereon. 1
The rods 17 are disposed one at each side of the cam shaft and'provided with nuts 19 on their projecting .ends,--see Fig. II. Mounted on the supportingmember at each side of the cam shaft is a bracket 20 having a plurality of cylinder-like slide ways 21 for the plunger-like push rod slides 22 which carry rollers-23 coacting with the cams of the cam shaft.
The push rods 24 have rounded heads or ends 25, one end being disposed in seats 26 in the plungers and the other in seats 27 provided therefor on the rocker arms 28. The seats 27 are carried by screws, so that they may be adjusted to take up any lost motion, and'to provide an'accurate adjustment of the parts. These rocker arms are mounted on shafts 29 disposed across the housing above the cylinders. The swinging ends of the rocker arms engage valve stems as shown in Fig. III
With this arrangement of parts, they are economical to produce and are very easily assembled and disassembled. By removing the, top 5 of the housing, the supporting frame 14 may be removed and with it the valve slides and the push rods.
It is not necessary to entirely remove the supporting frame to afford access to the actuating cams therefor on the cam shaft.
I have illustrated and described an embodiment of my invention which I consider very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications and adaptations, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be des1red.
Having thus described my invention what .I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination in an internal combustion engine comprising a plurality of horizontally disposed opposed cyllnders,
and a body providing a housing between and. I
extending above said cylinders, said housing bein provided with a removable top, of cylind er valves disposed above said cylinders with their stems projecting into said housing, rocker shafts disposed across said housing above said cylinders, rocker arms on said shafts coacting with said valve stems, seating springs for said valve disposed in said housing,.a cam shaft disposed centrally across said housing, a supporting frame having ears at its sides disposed above said cam shaft, removable rods disposed across said housing at each side of said cam shaft and through said ears, a part of the ears .being split and provided with clamping bolts whereby the frame is adjust-ably secured on said rods, push rod slides provided with rollers coacting with the cams of said cam shaft, cylindrical ways for said slides, supporting brackets for said ways mounted on the under side of said frame at each side of said cam shaft, and push rods having rounded ends seating in said slides and rocker arms.
2. The combination in an internal combustion engine comprising a plurality of horizontally disposed opposed cylinders, and a body providing a housing between and extending above said cylinders, said housing being provided with a removable top, of cylinder valves disposed above said cylinders with their stems projecting into said housing, rocker shafts disposed across said housing above said cylinders, rocker arms on said shaft coacting with said valve stems,
seating springs for said valves disposed in sald housing, a cam shaft disposed centrally across said housing, av supporting frame removably mounted above said cam shaft, push rod slldes provided with rollers coacting with the cams of said cam shaft,
and a body providing a housing between and extending above said cylinders, said housing being provided with a removable top, of cylinder valves disposed above said cylinders with their stems projecting into said housing, rocker shafts disposed across said housing above said cylinders, rocker arms on said shafts coacting with said valve stems, seating springs for' said valves disposed in said housing, a cam shaft disposed centrally across said housing, a supporting frame removably mounted above said: camv shaft, push rod slides carried by said frame, and push rods coacting with said slides and rocker arms.
4. The combination with an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder and a body providing a housing, of a valve for said cylinder, a cam shaft in said housing, a supporting frame having projecting ears, removable supporting rods for said frame disposed across said housing and through said ears, part of said ears being split and provided with clamping screws whereby the frame is adjustably secured on said rods, a push rod slide actuated by said cam shaft carried by said supporting frame, and a valve push rod coacting with said valve and slide.
5. The combination with an internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder and a body providing a housing, of a valve for said cylinder, a cam shaft in said housing, a supporting frame, removable supportingrods for said frame disposed across said housing, a push rod slide actuated by said cam shaft carried by said supporting frame, and a valve push rod coacting with said valve and'slide.
6. The combination with an internal com bustion engine comprising an engine and a body providing a housing having a remov-- able top, a cylinder valve, a rocker arm 00- acting with said valve, a seating spring for said-valve, a cam shaft, a supporting frame removably mounted in said housing, said top being removable independently of said supporting frame, a push rod slide carried by said frame coacting with a cam on said shaft, and a push rod having rounded ends seating in said slide and rocker arm.
7. The combination in an internal combustion engine comprising a plurality of horizontally disposed opposed cylinders and a body providing a housing between the cylinders having a removable top, valves for said cylinders, a cam shaft, a supporting frame removably mounted in said housing above said cam shaft and supported for lateral adjustment, said top being removable independently of said supporting frame, valve push rods, and slides for said push rods carried by said supporting frame.
8. The combination in an internal combustion engine comprising a plurality of horizontally disposed opposed cylinders and a body providing a housing between the cylinders, valves for said cylinders, a supporting frame removably mounted in said housing above said cam shaft, valve push rods, and slides for said push-rods carried by said supporting frame.
9. The combination in an internal combustion engine comprising a plurality of horizontally disposed opposed cylinders and a body providing a housing between the cylinders, of valves for said cylinders, a cam shaft, a supporting frame disposed above said cam shaft, supporting rods for said frame, one of which is removable, said frame being mounted on said rods for lateral adjustment thereof, push rod slides carried by said frame, and valve actuating push rods.
10. The combination in an internal combustion engine comprising a plurality of horizontally disposed opposed cylinders, and a body providing a housing between the cylinders, of valves for said cylinders, a cam shaft, a supporting frame disposed above said cam shaft, supporting rods for said frame, one of which at least is removable, push rod slides carried by said frame, and valve actuating push rods.
11. The combination with an internal combustion engine having opposed cylinders, of a cam shaft disposed between the cylinders, valves for said cylinders, a supporting frame above the cam shaft, for swing and lateral adjustment, and valve actuating members coacting with the cams of said cam shaft carried by said frame.
12. The combination with an internal combustion engine having opposed cylinders, of a cam shaft disposed between the cylinders, valves for said cylinders, a supporting frame removably mounted above the cam shaft, and valve actuating members coacting with the cams of said cam shaft carried by said frame.
