Application filed December 20, 1915.
' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER VVm'rox,
,citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Structures forInternal-Combustion Motors, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates generally to internal combustion motors and-particularly to a multiple valve structure utilized for the intake and exhaust.
More specifically the invention relates to a multiple valve structure arranged preferably in the head of an internal combustion motorfor each of the intake and exhaust, both valves in each instance being used in conjunction with a single operating unit, whereby the two valves will open and close simultaneously.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following drawings, description and claims. v
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a portion of an engine showing the valve structure applied; Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the valve operating unit; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the valve mechanism, showing a portion of the cylinder head in section.
In the embodiment shown the device is applied to an engine comprising a cylinder 1 having a cylinder head 2, and asuitable cam sha housing 3, receiving and support ing a cam shaft 4, adapted to be driven and operated from the engine shaft in a manner not shown or described. Suitable cams 5, one of which is shown in the drawings, operate the corresponding rocker levers 6, sup orted upon a suitable shaft or pin 7. lilac of these levers is provided with a friction roller 8, engaging one of the cams 5, and a roller 9 at the opposite end it'orv engageinent with the corresponding valve mechanism, which will now be described in detail.
The multiple valve feature disclosed in this application may be utilized with either or both of the intake and the exhaust, and in either instance the mechanism is the same so that a description of one will suffice "for both, the obyect being to provide the greatest Specification of Letters Patent.

possible valve opening without interfering with the remaining structure of the cylinder head.
Each of the cylinder heads 2 provided with a suitable chamber 10 arranged above the exhaust and the intake valves, and each of these chambers conuzmnicates by suitable openings 11 with the cylinder, there being a valve seat 12 about each of the openings ll. In the central alineineut with each of the openings ll is a valve guide 13 adapted to receive the usual valve stem 1%, preferably provided at its lower end with a mushroom valve 15 adapted to cooperate with the corresponding valve seat 12. As before intimated there are two of these complete valves and seats for each, the intake and the exhaust. Each of the valve stems 14 extends out through its guide 13 and is provided at its upper end with an annular recess 16, re-
ceiving the halves 17 oi a split ring, adapt ed to engage in a recess 18, formed in the thrust washer 19. A spring 20 is arranged between this thrust washer and the cylinder head for holding the valve seated.
The operating unit for each pair of valves, either the intake or the exhaust, com prises a supporting or base plate 21 adapted to extend between the two valves and to be held in place by bolts or cap screws entermg the openings 22. Extending upward from this supporting plate 21 is a tubular guide 23, having an opening 2t on one side and in the bottom for a purpose to be described. This tubular guide 23 receives a hollow guiding sharia: 25, forming a part 01 an operating plate 26, which has oppositely disposed portions extending out over the two valve stems. Mounted in this plate above each of the valve stems is a tappet screw 2'? threaded through the plate and held in place by a suitable check nut 28. Each of these screws engages valve stem as stated, and they may be provided with suitable finger pieces 29 for adjusting them. Arranged inside of the hollow guide 25 and the tubular guide 23 is a coiled spring 30, which normally tends to move the plate 26 and its guide 25 upward into engagement with the provided with a suitable opening for receiving a pin 31, mounted 1n and extending up- .ward from the supporting plate 21.
- spending cam 5. The tappet screws may then be adjusted properly With respect to the valve stems. In operation the rocker levers, as they are rocKed, engage the plates 26 and move the valves controlled by them downward, causing their simultaneous operation. I
Some of the principal points of invention are: the use of a plurality of valves on either the intake or the exhaust, or both; the oper ation of any one set by a single operating unit, the taking up of any lost motion between the valve operating unit and the cam; and other details of construction set forth in the specifications and claims.
Having described claim 1. In an internal combustion motor, a cylinder, a cylinder head having a plurality of valve openings and seats of one type, either exhaust or intake, valves engaging said seats, valve stems carried by said valves and extending to the outside of the cylinder head,
my invention, I
and an operating unit engaging said valve stems for simultaneously operating said valves, and comprising a base, a tubular guide, a hollow member engaging in said guide, a valve operating plate carried by the hollow member, a spring within the hollow member intended to force the plate away from the valve stems, and means independent of said valve stems for preventing rotation of the operating plate.
2. In an internal combustion motor, a cylinder, a cylinder head having a plurality of valve openings and seats of one type, either exhaust or intake, valves engaging said seats, valve stems carried by said valves and extending to the outside of the cylinder head, and an operating unit for simultaneously operating said valves, and comprising a base, a tubular guide, a hollow member engaging in said guide, a valve operating plate carried by the hollow member, a spring within the hollow member intended to force the plate away from the valve stem, and means for preventing rotation .of the operating plate, comprising a rod mounted in the base and extending through an opening in the operating plate.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
