Itis also clear that the arm 37 may be omitted in case such is desired or Whenever it is contemplated to scribe a line with the point 40 or with a lead pencil replacing the point 40. A purpose in having 1 the arm 37 in addition to the point 40 is to 'vermit the making of concentric lines.
In the operation 'of the device thus far described, it will be readily apparent that when the foot member, 11 is placed upon a suitable surface and the rod 16 arranged in vertical oosition, a circle may be inscribed by rotating the arm 26 about the rod 16 or with the rod 16 within the member 14 as a'bearing. It is also clear that, if desired, the collar 24 may be lifted to thedesired position and lamped in such position upon the rod 16 and the carriage 20 permitted to rotate upon the rod 16. If this is the arrangement a circle may be drawn in exactly the same manner as. above described. It is of course not necessary always to use'the foot piece ll'as it is quite true that the point 18 o the rod 16 may be employed as the pivot, the rod 16 in th1s instance being entirely removed from the member 11 by loosening the screw 17 and withdrawing the rod from the arm 14 as will be readily apparent. Byadjusting the arm 37 properly with respect to the point 40, it is quite apparent that concentric circles different distances a art may be drawn with the utmost ease. I it is desired to draw only one circle, the arm 37 may be removed and the point or a lead pencil in place thereof utilized as the scriber.
In some instances, it ma be desirable to employ the device for scri ing ellipses. If
such is the'case, it is readily apparent that V the arrangement may be as disclosed in Figure 6 of the drawings. Referring to this figure in detail, the numeral 41 designates a base member from which rises a rod 42 on which is vertically adjustably mounted a collar member 43 through which is slidable a 'rod' 44 which may be the identical rod 16 above described and which may carry the carriage -20 likewise above described, with which car- 7 screws 46 or the like. The arm 26 being of course arranged in the desired position with respect to the rod 44 and held, though capable of rotary movement, by means of the clamping screw 28. In this form there may be provided a scriber point 56 having a reduced shank 57 passing through the slot 27 in the arm 26 and equipped with a clamping nut 58 for maintaining it in an adjusted position. The carriage device 31 and its associated parts may be carried by the arm 26 in a manner described in connectionvwith Figure 6. In this form of the invention it is readily apparent that if the footmembers be placed against some flat surface and the arm 26 adjusted to give the proper position between the pivot screw 28, the scriber point 56 andthe scriber point 40 carried by the member 31 concentric circles may readily bedrawn. In Figure 5, I haveillustrated an extension member or modification-to replace the structure illustrated inFigurel Referring to this figure in detail it will be observed that I have illustrated a carriage 47 corresponding to the carriage 31 and provided with a stem 48 adapted to be received within the member 28 carried by the arm 26. However, in this instance, the carriage terminates in an ear 49 with which is pivotally connected at 50, an elongated arm 51 having a slot 52 along which is adjustably mounted, by means of a screw 53, a carrier member 54 for carrying a lead pencil or other scriber 55. r p
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings, it will be apparent that I have thus provided a'simply constructed, inexpensive and .1 very easily adjusted and operated device by means of which circles either singly or in" concentric relation may be drawn uponflat-or upon irregular surfaces. The arrangement of parts is also such that if desired the device, maybe placed against a vertical surface for drawing circles upon a upon the nature of the work to be'done. Fur
