SYLVESTER S. JONES, O F 'GLEVELAND, DHIG MANICURING nEv'IoE Application filed October 27, was. serial as. 315,528.
nism whereby the usual manicure tools can be operated by power, thereby expediting and facilitating the manicurists labors and saving bodily fatigue. Such power driven devices as have heretofore been known have ordinarily employed peculiar and uncongenial forms of tools which are not readily acceptable either to operators or to their patrons. My improved manicure device employs tools which can be operated interchangeably either by the machine or by hand.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this application I have illustrated different views of a single illustrative machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 1 is an elevation of the complete machine equipped with a file; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the machine shown in Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and at are sectional views corresponding to the lines 3-3 and H respectively of Fig. 2; Figs. 5 and 6 are views of the same machine showing dilferent operating parts attached thereto; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view corresponding to the line 7-'?' of Fig. 5.
In its preferred form my improved device comprises a hollow handle 1 preferably made in two halves split end to end and held together by suitable screws 22, one end of the handle being enlarged and chambered as at 3 for the reception of a bevel gear 4 suitably journaled on the transverse stud 5; and another part of the handle being narrowed as at 6 and provided with a rectangular metal lining 7 in which is slidably mounted a reciprocating rod member 8. One end of this rod is articulated to a pitman 9 whose opposite end is pivoted to an eccentric pin 10 carried by the gear 4; and the opposite end of said rod is equipped with provisions for the attachment of manicure tools. In the present embodiment, and for the purpose of disclosing my idea, I have shown n these provisions as comprising a short hook or extension 12 and a long hook or extension 13 both carried by the end of the rod 8 and adapted to enter the apertures at theopposite ends swimmer tool is applied thereto, wheelers file 15 as shown in Fig. 1 or one of the adapter handles shown in F igs, 5 and 6. Preferably the shank of the hook 13, is sufficiently .spriiig to hold the tools without the need for any mec anicalfastenings such as screwsorbuttons but it wi ll be understood that I do not limit myself to this construction.
Carried by the an "or as hassle apposite the reciprocating rod is a 'sleevein'einbeif 16 in which is journaled the shank 17 of atom: ing ,eleine'nt provided at one end with a severed driving prises s which m sses with the gear 4, and the otheieiid receives the fleiiible shaft 19 whereby power is coiiiniu nr Gated thereto from kind of in'otoif or other prime mover (notslioivri), In order toppshown a narrow elongated wood or metal strip 30 likewise having apertures 14 at its ends for the reception of the hooks 12 and 13, and formed at one side with a longitudinally bowed notch 31 terminating in an under-cut shoulder 32 at each end. The
emery board 33 is provided at its back with a bracket 34 to which is attached .a narrow strip 35 of flexible metal such as spring steel, the length of the strip 35 being such that when braced against the shoulders 32 it is bent longitudinally in accordance with the curvature of the slot 31. The brackets 22 erate'a buffer, an adapter handle is employed.
and 3 1 are made of sufficient length to cause the body of the buffer, emery, and so forth to clear the handle as the device is reciprocated. The body of the file 15, and of the into the sleeve 7 as the tool is operated.
It will be understood that many, changes in detail can be made without departing,
its
from my inventive idea and I do not limit myself except as specifically recited in my several claims which I desire may be construed each independently of limitations contained'in other claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1.,A manicure device comprising a housing, a lining in one end of said housing, a crank element in the other end of said housing, a reciprocable member slidably mounted in said lining, operative connections between said reciprocable member and crankielement,
a flexible shaft operatively connected to said crank element, and means for securing a manicure tool to the opposite end of said reciprocable member so that a part of said tool passes into said housing at each reciprocation.
signature.
"2. An adapterelement for power driven manicure tools comprising a narrow elongated strip, means for connecting said strip in line with a reciprocating member, a bracket projecting laterally from said strip,
, and a reciprocable manicure-tool carried by said bracket at one side of said strip and parallel thereto. 7 r g 3; An adapter element for power driven manicure tools comprising a narrow clon a gated strip, means for connecting said strip in line with a reciprocating memberfa bracket projecting laterally from said strip,
said bracket being formed with a socket s aced from said'strip, and a manicure tool etachably mounted in said socket.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my SYLVESTER s. JONES.
