The resent invention relates particularly to word printing mechanism that is intended for use in calculating machines, cash registers and like machines; and is a division of my application Serial-No. 1,004, filed J anuary 10, 1900, and eventuating in Patent No. 1,429,201, dated September 12, 1922.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide improved means for printing words 1:) in conjunction with the printing of items by one or a plurality of sets of types which may be associated with one or a plurality of sets of accumulators.
Another object is to provide means for printing words in conjunction with the printmg of a total by an item-printing mechanism under control of an accumulating mechanism.
Another object is to provide word types which are mounted to be separately movable on a common type sector.
Other objects will be pointed out in the following description and claims.

General adding and mechanism The reference numeral (Figs. 1 and 2) denotes numeral keys arranged in denominational rows and depressible to set up items or amounts for entry into a series of accumulator wheels 2 (Fig. 2). Each row of numeral keys has associated therewith a ke lever 36, 37, the vertical arm 37 of which is provided with a series of stop shoulders 39 and the horizontal arm 36 of which extends below the corres onding row of keys for operation by any ey in said row. Also assom ciated with each row of keys is a corresponding one of a series of controlling arms 30 pivoted on a cross rod 31 and coo crating with the related key lever 36, 37. ormally each controlling arm stands in the position shown in Fig. 2, wherein a lug 33 on said arm is engaged by shoulder 38 on the rear side of the arm 37 of the associated key lever; Upon depression of any numeral key 111 the corresponding row t e key lever is turned, disengaging said shoulder 38 from lug 33 of said controlling arm and bringing into the ath 01. a lug 34 onsaid arm a stop shoulder 9 corresponding to the key depressed. The segaa ments 5 are shiftable forwardly and rearwardly with respect to the controlling arms for engagement with and disengagement from the respective inions 4. Also connected with each centre ling arm 30 is a corresponding one of a series of type segments 141 each provided with a setof numeral ty e elements 142. It will thus be seen thattie positions to which the actuating segments 5 and printing as ments 141 are movable are controlled by t e arms 30, in conjunction with the respective key levers; the latter, in turn, being settable by the numeral keys.
The operating handle 21 is secured to one end of the shaft (Figs. 2, 7, and 12), to which shaft a frame 15 (Figs. 2 and 12) and a frame 29 (Figs. 9 and 12) are attached. During the initial forward rocking of said handle 21 the frame 15, through its attached cam plate 14 acting upon arm 13, rock arms 8, and rod 7, throws the actuating segments 5 into mesh with the respective accumulator pinions 4. As forward rocking of said handle 21 continues, the rear walls of notches 28 in the frames 15 and 29 come into engagement with a cross bar carried by rock arms 24 loosely mounted on shaft 20, and rock said bar 25 downwardly and forwardly. Such lowerin of said bar 25 moves downwardly a 6! cross 10% 22 connected thereto and underlymemes ing the segments 5, and also exerts a downward bpull upon springs 27 connecting said bar 2 and said segments. Thereby, those segments 5- whose controlling arms 30 have been freed by depression of numeral keys are moved downwardly, together with their controllin arms through extents commensurate with t e setting of the key levers; and the accumulator inions 4 are turned by said segments throng corrcspondin extents whereby the amount set up on the key board is added to the sum formerly standing upon said wheels. Also, the segments 141 are moved with said controlling arms and bring to the printing line type corresponding to the depressed keys.
After the tfype segments 141 have been positioned as a oresaid, hammers 147 are actuated to drive rearwardly the respective type elements 142 that are in printing position whereby the amount set u by the numeral keys is printed on a record sheet carried b a platen 140. Operation of the hammers 14 is caused by the drawing downwardly of a bar 151 supported by arms 152 from rod 31 and carrying a series of pawls 153 (Figs. 2, 3, 6 and 19), one for each hammer.' During the setting of the rinting segments to their ropcr ositions t e pawls 153 corres 0ndmg to t ose of the hammers 147 that s ould be operated for printing the item are moved into operative relation with said hammers, each of said awls engaging a shoulder 156 on its related ammer; and u )on the ensuing rocking of the bar 151 sai hammers are drawn downwardl by said pawls. During such movement 0 said hammers an upper lug 157 (Fig. 3) on each hammer engages a trlp face 155 on the associatedpawl and cams the latter out of engagement with the lug 156, whereby said hammers are released and are driven rearwardly by their springs 148 to effect printingby the type elements 142 that are at the printing line. The operation of the rod 151 to cause actuation of the ham mers is effected through a hook 168 connected to said rod and engageable by a cross rod 169 carried by the rock arms 24 above mentioned.
At or near the end of the forward movement of the operating handle 21, the cam 14 on frame 15 moves clear of the roller 18 on arm 13, whereupon spring 11 (Fig. 9) draws arms 8 backwardly to their position shown in Fig. 2. During the rearward or return rocking of handle 21, the shaft 20 and frames 15 and 29 rock rearwardly, the arms 24 are rocked to raise the lifting rod 22, and the actuators 5, controlling arms 30, and printing segments 141 are restored to their normal position.
For a more detailed descri tion of the operations of accumulating an printing reference may be made to the parent case (Patent No. 1,429,201) hereinbefore referred to.
Wordeprintiagmechanz'sm ber-printing segment of the main number recording mechanism. This segment is provided with a number of radially movable carriers 1420, which are constructed the same as the carriers of the number printing segments and each of which is provided on its face with a word-type. The words of these types are selected according to the purpose or business for which the machine is to be used. For instance, if the machine is to be used in a bank, types representing the words Vouchers, Checks, Drafts, Bills, and similar words, common to the banking business may be used. When the machine is designed for use in a restaurant, the words Soup, Vegetables, Meats, Dessert, and other words peculiar to thisbusiness may be used.
The position of the word-type segment is controlled by a key-lever 3600, Figure 8, which turns on the bar 35, is similar to the number key levers, and is provided on the front side of its upper arm 3700 with a vertical series of differential stops or shoulders 3900 which are adapted to be engaged by the stop-lug 3400 of a controlling arm 3000; and lever 3600 is also provided with a locking stop or shoulder which is adapted to be engaged by a locking lug 3300 on the controlling arm, as represented in Figure 8. The controlling arm 3000 is connected with the word-printing segment by a connecting-bar 1460. The stopshoulders on the upper arm of the word-key lever are so arranged that upon swinging this lever so as to carry different shoulders into the path of the stop lug on the controlling arm, the latter will be arrested at different points in its downward or forward movement and the word-printing segment connected therewith will be stopped at different points in its upward movement and present the particular word-type to the printing point which corresponds with the shoulder or stop on the word-key lever.
The upward movement of the controlling arm 3000 is limited by its rear locking lug 3300 engaging with the stop-bar 32, which arrests the upward movement of the controlling arms 30 of the number registering and recording mechanism.. The downward movement of the controlling arm 3000 and the simultaneous upward movement of the wordprinting segment is efl'ected by a sprin 215 which yieldingly connects this arm wit the bar 25 to which the registering gear segments are connected.
216, Figure 1, represents a row of wordkeys having depending stems which are and which engage against the u per side of the front arm 3600 of the wordey lever at different distances from the fulcrum thereof. Upon depressing any of the word-keys, the Word-key lever will be turned the proper distance to bring its proper stop shoulder into the path of the stop lug of the companion controllin'g arm and arrest the word-type seg ment during its upward movement, when the word-type corresponding with the word of the depressed key has reached the printing line. lVhen the respective word-type is in this position the same is driven against the recording surface for producing an impression thereon, at the'same time that the printing of the numbers by the numbering print- .guidedin the top and bottom of the key-board ing segments is effected. The word-types are driven against the platen by a hammer-operating mechanism which is constructed the' same as the hammer-operating devices ofthe number printing mechanism and the same letters of reference are therefore used to denote I Aum'liary adding mechanism An auxiliary adding mechanism is provided which permits of effecting an addition of numbers different from the numbers which are added by the main' adding mechanism.
This auxiliary adding mechanism is con structed as follows:
2000 (Fig. 7) represents a number of auxiliary dials which are mounted on the left hand end of the dial shaft 3.
5000 represents a number of auxiliary gear segments which are mounted on the transverse rod 7, and are adapted to engage with gear pinions 400 on the auxiliary dials, as represented in Figure 7. Each gear segment 5000 is connected with a controlling arm 3001 arranged adjacent to the gear segment by a latch or coupling which at times permits the segment to move independently of the controlling arm.
3601 and 3701 represent auxiliary key levers which are operated by auxiliar keys 401 and which control the operation of the auxiliary registering and recordingmcchanism. The detail construction of the dials, gear segments, printing segments, key levers and the parts co-operating therewith of the auxiliary registering and recording mechanism is substantially the same as the construction of the same parts in the main registering and recording mechanism, except as hereinafter distinguished, and the same letters of reference are therefore employed to denote like parts in both of these sets of mechanisms.

In the auxiliary registering mechanism the gear segments are not provided with lower 0 stops 46 like those of the gear se ments of the go lifting cross-bar 22. However, for the purpose of the present application, the auxiliary mechanism could be made exactly as the main number registering and recording mechanism is made.
For the urpose of effecting an ordinary addition 0 numbers on the auxiliary registering mechanism the auxiliary key levers are shifted into the proper position by the depression of the keys 401 representing the numbers to be added and then the rocking segments 15 and 29 are turned forwardly. During the forward movement of the rocking frames the auxiliary gear segments are first moved into engagement with the auxiliary dial pinions by the cam 14 and then pulled down by the springs 27 and the controlling arms are also pulled down by the latches of the gear segments engaging with the controlling arms. The downward movement of the gear segments and controlling arms continues until the steps 34 of the controlling arm strike the shoulders 39 on the key levers which stand in the path of the steps 34. At the end of the forward movement of therocking frames the gear segments are withdrawn from the dial pinions by the springs 11 and during the subsequent back ward movement of the rocking frames the gear segments and controlling arms are raised by the cross-bar 22 engaging with the gear -se ments and with the feet 219 of the arms.

By this organization of the machine, numbers such as sales or pieces of goods can be added and recorded by the main re 'stering mechanism. and other numbers sue asthe rebate on sales and discount on the prices of the goods, can be separately added or recorded by the auxiliary registring mechanism.
The ke -controlled devices whereby the parts of t e main registerin and recordin mechanism are shifted into t e proper position re aratory to registering and recording a numier are distinct from the he -controlled devices whereby the same eect is produced in the auxiliary registering and recording mechanism, but both sets of registering and recording mechanisms are operated simultaneously by the one universal shifting mechanism for effecting the re 'stration and recordin of the numberswhich are represented by t e different positions of both key-controlled devices.
Indicator 01' detector dials In order to enable the operator to see which particular character or characters the machine is set for printing after depressing the keys. and thereby detect any errors in the depre:sion of the keys, each of the key levers is provided with an auxiliary dial indicator or detector, 238. which is turned forward the same number of spaces that the key lever has been depressed and then returns to its initial osition when the key lever moves backward into its normal position. In the preferred construction of the detector dials shown in Ifilgures 1, 2, and 8, each of these dials consists preferably of a wheel 238 provided on one side with a pinion 239 which is engaged by a gear segment 240, secured to the ad]acent key-lever. as shown in Figure 2.

If a key lever 1s not (l0)IGSSe(l its detector dial remains at zero. he detector dial of the word-printing mechanism is in like manner turned by its key lever 50 as to indicate the word which corresponds to the word of the depressed ke l The detector dials of the several registermg and recording devices are mounted loosely on a transverse sup orting rod 241. By means of these detector dials the operator can see which number and word is represented by the depressed keys, thereby enabling the same to be corrected if an error occurs before registering and printing the same.
The type are driven by the means hereto- Ill fore described against a record sheet which passes in front of a rotatable platen 140, which may be supported in a horizontally movable carriage, and line spaced at each operation of the machine, or rotated by hand to a desired position. Suitable means for inking the t pe are also provided, all as more fully descri ed in Patent #1,429,201 and in Patent #l,590,024.' dated June 22, 1926.
Suitable means are provided for latching down the depressed keys (except the totalizer clearing key), for automatically releasing the keys at the proper time in the. operation of the machine, and for manually releasing shifting keys, or numeral keys that have been wrongly depressed. A device is likewise provided for insuring a full stroke of;the
operating handle after its displacement from home position. Mechanisms for these purposes are fully describedin Patent #1,429,201 and in applications, Serial Nos. 183,397, and 183,398, filed July 30, 1917.
The two columns or. rows of word and shifting keysare each providedwithalocking mechanism similar to the main and auxiliary keys, but the locking plates of these keys are disengaged from the stems by a separate releasing mechanism so as to permit the main and auxiliary number keys tobe released without releasing the word and shifting keys.
As shown in Figure 14, the release of the word and shifting keys is effected by a supplemental releasing bar 348 having ugs 349 which engage with the pins 335 on the rear end of the locking plates of the word and shifting keys and which is guided at its outer end in the frame. The inner end of the supplemental releasing bar is pivoted to the upper arm of a releasing elbow lever 350. This lever is pivoted on the pin 337 and its lower arm projects toward the right and underneath the releasing arm 338 adjacent to the rear side of the lower arm of the releasing elbow lever 336.
When both lower arms of the releasing elbow levers 336 and 350 are arranged underv neath the releasing arm 338, the depression of the latter bythe rocking frames causes the supplemental releasing bar to be moved toward the left so that its lugs disengage the locking plates of the word and shifting keys from their respective stems at the same time that the main and auxiliary releasing bars disengagethe locking plates of the main and auxiliary number keys from their respective stems, thereby releasing all of the keys simultaneously after the registering and recording ofthe words and numbers has been effected.
The invention is not limited to the precise mechanism which has been illustrated and described but extends to all equivalent devices falling within a broad interpretation of the appended claims.
What is claimed is: 1. In a machine of the class described, the
combination with word-printi mechanism employing a latch, of mechanism separate from the wor -printing mechanism operable to print numbers on the said platen, and means for concomitantl accumulating a plurality of separate totals of the numbers as recorded when so required and simultaneously recording said totals on'said stantially .as described. v
2. In a machine of theclass described, the combination with word-printing mechanism having a platen arran ed to carry paper, of devices'carrying num er type independent of the word-printing mechanism, means for making a printing impression, and a number of separate totalizers operable to produce separate totals of the distinctive items recorded and adapted to control the simultaneous recording of said totals on said platen; substantially as described.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with word-printing mechanism employing a platen arranged to carry paper, of devices carrying type independent of the Word-printing mechanlsm, means for printing the numbers by use of the type, means for concomitantly retaining a plurality of platen subseparate totals of the distinctive items recorded, and means for simultaneously recording said separate totals on said platen; substantially as described.
4. In a machine of the class described, the combination with word-printing mechanism having a platen arran ed to carry paper, of devices carrying num er type independent of the word-printing mechanism, independent hammers operable to drive the t pe in the carriers against the platen, an total wheels operable to add the numbers recorded, and means for recording said totals on said platen, substantially. as described.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a totalizer, racks, type positioned by said racks some of whose printing type are always in printing position, independently operable type-hammers for said type, a platen for supporting paper and separate mechanism for println words adjacent to and in line with said rst-mentioned printing type; substantially as described.
6. In a calculating machine, the combination of a set of accumulators operable to accumulate items, a plurality of numeral printing types operable for printing items accumulated on said set of accumulators, driving mechanism for driving predetermined ones of said types toward for printing on a record sheet, a plurality'of special printing types operable to print matter other than numerals on said record sheet and in juxtaposition to the items printed by said numeral printing types, driving mechanism other than the first said driving mechanism for driving predetermined ones of said special types toward said record sheet for printing thereon, and operatoperating both ceiving impressions t erefrom 1n difl'erent columnar positions; a plurality of special types co-operative with sa1d platen to eifect printing 0 matter other than numerals; and a plura ity of sets of keys, the keys of one set being constructed to control when depressed, the printing of numbers bysaid numeral printmg ty es, and the he 's of the other set to centre printing by said special types. 4
8. In a calculating machine comprising a print receiving platen and a carriage upon tion of a types for each of a plurality of sai which said platen is mounted and which is operable to move said platen transversely of said types, the combination of a plurality of accumulators for accumulating items;.a plurality of sets-of numeral types, one set for each denomination'of said accumulators; a hand-controlled operation-controlling memher 0 erable at a single operation to cause a plura ity of said accumulators to accumulate and to cause printing by a type of each of a plurality of said sets of numeral types; a
plurality of special types co-o erative with said platen to efi'ect rinting oi matter other than numerals; and a common key-board, comprising a plurality of rows of number keys, one row for each accumulator and set of numeral types of a plurality of said accumulators an sets of numeral types, and a set of keys for controlling said special printing types.

In a machine comprising a horizontally movable carriage, means on said carriage for carrying and line spacing a record sheet, and means for detaining said carriage in a position for locating the printing in a predetermined position on said record sheet and operable for allowing said carriage to be moved to a position for continuing said printing in another space; in combination, an operating member, a set of numeral types a plurality of which may be impressed by a single operation of said operating member so as to print numerals on said record sheet, and a set of word printing types for printing words on said record sheet in connection with said numerals.
15. The combination with a main item registering and recording mechanism and its key-controlling operating mechanism, a Word recording mechanism and its key-controlled operating mechanism, and an auxiliary item registering and recording mechanism and its key-controlled operating mechanism, of a universal actuating mechanism whereby said operating mechanisms are shifted, substantially as set forth.
16. In a calculating machine, the combination of a set of accumulators operable to accumulate items into totals, a, plurality of numeral types operable for printing items accumulated by said accumulators, a plurality of keys for determining said items, universal operating mechanism for causing said accumulators to accumulate and said numeral types to print-the items determined by said keys and operable for effecting printing by said numeral types of the total accumulated by said accumulators and under control of said acumulators, a plurality of special types optionally operable for effecting printing of matter other than numerals in juxtaposition to items and totals printed by said numeral types, and a plurality of manipulative members for controlling printing by said special types.
17 .,In a calculating machine, the combination of a set of accumulators operable to accumulate items into totals, a plurality of numeral types operable for printing items and tools accumulated on said accumulators, a plurality of keys for determining said items, a plurality of special types operable for effecting printing of matter other than numerals injuxtaposition to items and totals printed by said numeral types, a plurality of manipulative members for controlling printing by said special types, and universal operating mechanism for causing said accumulators to accumulate and said numeral types to print the items determined by said keys and operable for efiecting printmg by said numeral types of the total accumulated by said accumulators and under control of said accumulators, and for causing said special types to print according to the control of said manipulative members.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a differentially reciprocatory special type carrier having an abutment projection; a step indexing member movable to present one or another of its shoulders in the path of said projection; and 7 special keys and connections for variously positioning said indexing member.
19. In a machine of the class described, i
the combination of number printing mechanism, a totalizer adapted to receive items printed by said number printing mechanism, means for causing said number printing mechanism to print totals of said items under control of said totalizer, and mechanism for printing words in conjunction with said totals for identifying the latter.

The combination of a plurality of Word printing types, a segment supporting said types and movable to bring each of said types to printing position, a series of stops for controlling the position of said segment, a series of keys for selectively controlling said stops, and an operation-controlling member for moving said segment to a position detert mined by the selected stop.

The combination of a. plurality of word printing types, a segment supporting said types and movable to bring each of said types to printing posit-ion, a member provided with a series of stop elements for controlling the position of said segment, a series of keys for selectively controlling said member to bring a' selected stop element into operative relation with said segment, and means for moving said segment to a position determined by the selected element. 1
