TRAVELING BAG Filed Oct. 12, 1926 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. WILL/AM F/N/(ELSTE/N ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 7, 1930 UNITED STATES a ien orrics TRAVELING BAG Application filed October 12, 1926. Serial No. 141,10 i.
This invention relates to attachments for usein connection with valises, hand bags, traveling bags, suit cases, satchels and the like and has foritsobject the production of a new and [improved lining for the same whereby a stronger bag is produced, and one which will more easily withstand outside pressure withoutlosing shape and whereby the life of the bag proper will be generally increased.
In the present practice of making valises,
hand bags and the like, the linings are at tached directly to the bag structure and the lining and bag structureproper are both attachedlto the frame. v
This results in certain disadvantages of which the following are pointed out:
First the lining cannot be removed from the inside of the bag without practically destroying the same, since it can onl be removed by cutting "the same away from the frame. l Secondly, since the lining cannot be removedfrom the insldeof thezbag w thout destroylng the same, a solledlming necessltates thepurchase of new bag while the outside bagstructure is still strong.
.Thirdly, since the lining cannot be removed L 6 from the frame the inside of the bag cannot 1.40 in the U. .S. Patent #1,028,168-to Williams,
June 4,1912.
It isoneof the applicants "objects to produce an improved reinforcing structure which may be moreeasily made than the attachment disclosed by Williams aforementioned. V
More specificallysome of the objects of this invention are .F-irstito produce flrIlBW and improved lining s for valises, handbags, traveling bags, satchels and the like and which structure.
Secondly to produce a removable new and improved lining for valises, handbags, traveling bags, Satchels and the like.
Thirdly to produce a new and improved reinforcing means for the body of valises, hand bags, traveling bags andthe like.
Fourthly to produce a new and improved bag whereby only a portion of the lining is. removable if desired.
vVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention, without limiting intention, resides in the combination and an rangement of parts and in the details of construct-ion hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the preferred form of the invention has been shown,
Figure .1, is a perspective view of the reinforcing and bracing means detached from the lining.
Figure 2, is a sectional view taken "on the line 22 of Figure 1. i
Figure 3, is a sectional view takenon the line 33 of Figure 1. y e 1 Figure 4, is a perspective view of the removable lining per se.
Figure 5, is a perspective view of the removable lining. associated with the reinforcing structure parts being broken away to more clearly bring out certain details of construotion.
Figure 6, is a sectional view taken on the line 6 6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7, is a schematic perspective viewof the bag and lining combined parts of both the bag and lining being broken away to more clearly bring out details of construction.
Figure .8, is atop view of one of the top bracing elements shown in Figure 1.
Figure 9, is; a schematic sectional View taken on the line 99 of Figure 7 parts being 95 left out for the purpose of clearness.
Referring more specifically to the figures wherein like reference numerals denote similar parts, reference numeral 1 denotes the re-. inforcing and bracing framework to which reinforces the bag the removable lining is attached and which supports the same The framework 1 consists of a plurality of U shaped body members 2, and of two U shaped top members 3. These are preferably made of resilient material such as s )ring metal but need not necessarily be made 0 that since any material having the necessary qualities of rigidity and a certain amount of elasticity may be used. The ends of the U shaped body members 3, are bent over and around the top U shaped members 2, and are secured to the main body members 2 by rivets 5, or other connecting means thus forming the loops 4 in which are carried the top members 3. Riveted or otherwise attached to the members 2 is a strip 10 which serves as a spacer for the said members and also to prevent lateral movement of the same.
Reference numeral 6 denotes the removable lining.
This may be made of leather, cloth, leatheroid or any other material desired and in its preferred form is a bag like structure having side walls 7 and 7 and a bottom 8. The top of the side Walls 7 and 7' are bent upon themselves to form the loops 9 which serve to carry the top bracing members 3 of the assembly 1. Auxiliary strips 11 are attached to the walls 7' in the manner shown to form the pockets 12.
Attached by stitching or otherwise at desirable points along the top of the sides 7 are the auxiliary leather flaps 13 which serve as an aid when it is desired to remove the removable lining from the bag.
Attached by stitching or otherwise to the top of the sides 7 of the bag are the leather tabs 14 carrying the male member 15 of a fastening snap which cooperates with a female member situated at a suitable cooperative point on the bag proper to keep the bag and lining together.
It is to be understood that the disclosure as to situation of the tabs 13 and'll are merely for the purposes of illustration and not by the way of limitation.
The bag per se 18 is the well known type of valise, hand bag, satchel or the like with the exception of the fact that it has no lining. However the applicants attachment could be used with bags having linings as an auxiliary bracing frame and lining protector.
In assembling the removable lining structure the lining portion 6 is generally put within the U bracing members 2 and the loops 9 of the lining portion encompass the top bracing 3 as shown (see Figure 5) the looped part of 1.7 of the lining portion being secured to the main walls 7 and 7' by rivets 16 or by stitching or other means. The completed assembly is designated 6.
In assembling the removable lining assembly 6 with the bag portion 18, the former is inserted into the latter the top members 3 being placed under the frame elements 19 of the bag as shown in Figures 7 and 9. The reinforcing members 2 being resilient assume the shape of the bag as shown in Figures 7 and 9 at the same time being put under compression. This serves to both force the side walls of the bag outward, thus helping it to keep its shape and to help the bag to resist lateral compression, and also serves to press top members 3 against the bag frame ele ments 19 thus serving to keep the removable lining structure 6 in place and also to reist vertical compression. The frame element being constructed as shown serves to evenly distribute any pressure. To prevent relative motion between the bag and removable frame assemblies the two are attached together by means of the snap hook fastening means 15 and 15 situated the auxiliary tabs 14: and 14 attached to the removable lining and bag structures respectively as shown in Figure 9 where the auxiliary tab 14 is shown overlying the auxiliary tab 14.
It is to be understood that wherever necessary rivets or other binding means are used to keep separate pieces firmly united together.
It is to be further understood that the above disclosure is by the way of illustration only and not by the way of limitation since many changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention described above and claimed in the following claims Defim'tz'0ns.The word integral as used in the claims and specifications is used to denote a continuous member, such as U shaped body member 2, whether formed of a single piece or a plurality of pieces joined together by riveting, welding or the like to constitute a continuous unit.
