IMPROVEMENT m DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,l95, dated February 29, 1876; application filed January 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDSELL W. CHAMBER- LAIN, of Sullivan, Ashland county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Door Check and Holder, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in forming a reversible door-check of two pieces, one of which has a pivot, base-plate, and check-studs, and the other a latch and check; the whole to be used in connection with a spring, as hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed.
Figure 1 is a top view of a door and my improved check and holder, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Ais the-door; B, the latch; G, the catch; D, the check; E, the spring; F, the pivot, and G the support for the pivot. The edge of the door strikes against the beveled nose of the catch and swings it back, and the spring throws itforward again when the door passes the catch. As soon as the door passes the catch, it strikes against the check D and is stopped. Instead of catching the edge of the door, a piece of metal may be attached to the side of the door for the latch to work on.
The spring may be contrived in different ways, and the support for the pivot may be contrived for attaching to the base of the' wall or partition instead of the floor.
H represents a coupleof check-studs that may be used to limit the swing of the catch in either direction.
I am aware that pivoted-latch door-checks are not new; but 1 make mine of only two castings, ready to receive the spring and to be applied to doorwayswithout drill, file, or other tool, at very small expense; also, so as to be reversible, and thus serve as a right or left check by simply changingsides. Hence,
What I claim i A reversible door-check, cast or otherwise formed of two pieces, one having pivot F, base-place G, and check-studs H, and the other a reversible latch-piece B, having latch O, and check D, applicable in connection with spring E, as and for the purpose specified.
EDSELL W. CHAMBERLAIN.
