y s 1 'I OF NEW YORK Y Y WATER TURBINE Application led Decemluer This invention relates generally to power devices, and has more particular reference to a novel water wheel adapted for engaging in a moving stream.
The invention has for an object the provision of a device of the class mentioned which is of simple durable construction, desirable in use and efficient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable ldcost.
The invention proposes the use of a cylindrical body having closed ends and rotatively supported transversely in a stream of water. Main paddle wings are pivotally mounted `15`along the sides of the cylindrical body and have projecting hooks for forming stops for small wings pivotally connected on the hinge points of the main wings for forming comv pound wings. A weight is supported on a Hexible member attached on the small wings and arranged for opening` the small wings at desired times so as to move the main wings into operative positions.
It is pointed out that a machine constructed `according to this invention will receive power from the moving stream and this power may be transmitted to an electric generator for supplying electric current.
For further comprehension of the inven- Ttion, and of the object and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

erally a moving streamand 11 indicates its bottom. A concrete foundation 12 is built on the bottom 11 and extends upwards out of the stream of water. This foundation is constructed in the form of a housing and at its top endis provided with a cover 13. A sec-` ond foundation housing 14 is also built upon the bottom 11, but is of small height so as not to extend out of the water. This housing is provided with a cover 15. Standards 16 are mounted on the base of the housing 12, and a standard 17 is mounted within the housing 14. A shaft 18 is rotatively supported within these standards. l
A cylindrical body 19 having closed ends 20 is .fixed upon this shaft between the said standards. At one end, the shaft is provided with a bevel gear 21 meshing with another bevel gear 22 fixed on a shaft 23 rotatively mounted in the housing 12 and vertically arranged. A bevel gear 24 is fixed onto the `top end of the shaft 23` and meshes with a bevel gear 25 on the shaft of a generator 26. The generator is shown with power leads 27.
Main paddle wings 28 are provided at their lower ends with lixed shafts 29 rotatively mounted on the sides of the cylindrical body as, by standards 30. Small wing members 31 are pivotally mounted on their lower edges, as at 32 on the shafts 29` and are positioned on the rear sides of the wings 28. The front sidesof the wings 28 may be defined as the sides against which the stream of water acts for rotating the cylindrical body. A pair of hooks 33 project rearwards from the main wings 28 and serve as a limiting means for the amount which the wings 31 may open. Flexible members 34 are attached onto the small wings 31 and weights 35 are arranged on these flexible members.
The main paddle wings 28 are formed with projecting stop members 36 for limiting their motion to a radial position. These wings may also move to a substantially tangential p position disposed towards their front. These stop lugs 36 project through apertures 37 formed in the small wings 31 and abut against the cylindrical body 19.

In operation of the device, the cylindrical body 19 turns by reason of the moving stream 10 acting against the compound Wings. The motion is transmitted by the system of bevel gears to the electric generator 26 which generates electric oWer for general use. The compound ad le Wings are so arranged as to assume radial positions whilel at the lowery portions of the cylindrical body and as the' water acts against the main paddle wings for rotating the cylindrical body the compound Wings are arranged tomove to sulv stantially tangential positions as before stated, on. the sideA of the cylindrical body away from the direction of the motion of the` stream. It is seen that the weight hangs downwards and finally drawsy the small' Wings o aen, then the small wings rest against the hoo elements 33. They remain inl this condition during rotation of the cylindrical body through an angle of' approximately 100 degrees and then the streamacts against the front side of the main paddle Wings for rotating the cylindrical: body. The main wings may then tilt' towards the: front for assuming t1' positions as shown in. Fig. 2;.
While I have-shown and described tliepreferred embodiment of my "invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed: and the right is reserved to.I all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the inventina afs-defined inthe appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as-new, and desirezto-secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, a cylindrical body provided with pivotedi main wings and4 a small wing pivotally mounted on the point of each of the main Wings and disposed to ,the rear of each main7 Wing and arranged for moving the main Wing from a substantially tangential positionrearwards upon rotation of the cylindricalbody, and a stoprmember projecting from the rear face of' each of the main wings andv passing thru an aperture in the small Wing and its free end beingabuttable against the cylinder for'limitin rearward? motion` of the main Wing to a ra ial position.
