IMPROVEMENT IN COUNTER-STIFFENERS AND SHANKS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,174. dated February 29, 1876 application filed January 31, 1876'.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. ADGATE, of New York city, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, hay e invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Shanks, Counter-Supports, and Shifting Heels for Boots and Shoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, makinga part of this specification.
T he nature of my invention consists in combiningin a boot or shoe a detachable heel,
a counter-stiffener, and a spring-shank, connected together or formed of one piece, and. connected to the heelby screws, to allow of the heel being removed at will, as'will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
I11 order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to'make and use the same, I will nowproceed to do scribe its construction and operation, referringto the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the A represents the sole of a boot or shoe, and B is the heel thereof, said heel being made entirely separate and independent of the sole. 0 represents the spring-shank, and D is the heel or counter-stiffener. This shank and stiffener are made of a single piece of steel,
either struck up or otherwise formed in the desired shape, and placed in the boot or shoe,
when three screws, or, are passed down through the heel part of the shank and through the sole A into the heel B, thus securing the latter firmly in its place.

is attached to the under part of the shankplate C, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, for

Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a The counter-stiffener D and spring-shank G, re-enforced by a spring, E, and adapted to be secured to the sole and heel of a boot or shoe, substantially as and for thepurpose set forth.
