PATENT OFFron.
IOF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN .HOUSE VENTILATION.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,173, dated February 29, 1876; application filed February 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN ABRAHAMs,
tain new and useful Improvements in House Ventllation, of which the following is a speci- My invention is directed to preventing sewer-gases from entering houses, factories, &c., through the service-pipes which connect. the house waste or discharge pipes with the sewer. This I accomplish by providihg means whereby the service-pipe is continually ventilated, as is also the street-sewer, and free vent is afforded any gases that might otherwise. force their way up through the house-connections into the interior of the building.
It has heretofore been proposed to'provide for escape of the sewer-gas by means of a single pipe leading; from the service-pipe to theroof of the house. This, however, is pracor vapors arisingfroln decomposition, or from pipe, they tend to create a vacuum in the service-pipe, and this tendency to vacuum of course serves to retain the gases in the ser- Under my invention I make use of two pipes, through one of which air will enter to replace the gases that may escape through the other. I thus keep. the house sewer or service pipe constantly ventilated, and afl'ord opportunity or vapors. v
The accompanying drawing represents the manner in which my invention is or may be carried into effect.
A is the inclined service-pipe or house-sewer, that conducts the house-sewage to the main sewer. a (t, &c., are the several discharge-connections .that'conduct the waste 0 are the two pipes by which the house-sewer is ventilated and the gases from the sewer are permitted to escape. The pipe B extends from sewer-pipe A (connecting therewith. at a point just as it enters the house) to the roof I of the house, or some feet aboveit, running for this purpose along the front of the house or inside the wall, or carried by a bend to the rear, or arranged in any other suitable way to reach the roof, or a number of feet above it. Its upper end is, of course, open. The pipe 0 opens into the sewer-pipe A on the side of fected through the pipe 0, a counter or downward current of air will pass through B. In
this way there will be a con inual ventilation of the sewer, and the gases as fast as they en- 'ter or are generated in the service-pipe will be discharged through the pipe B. I
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The method herein described of ventilating house-sewers, and also the sewer in the street, and providing for the discharge of gases generated or entering therein by the employment, in connection withthe house sewer or service pipe, of two pipes extending from the sewerpipe to or above the root of the building, and arranged so that thegases discharged .from the sewer through the one will be replaced by air entering the sewer through the other, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto signed my name this 9th day of February, A. D. 1876.
BENJAMIN ABRAHAMS.
