This invention relates to an advertising device, the general object of the invention being to provide a windmill, with'a drum rotated by the mill and carrying advertising matter on its outer circumference, the tail of the mill also carrying advertising matter, with means for illuminating the tail and drum so that the advertising matter can be seen at night as well as during the day.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically ]5 pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing our invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan View.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 2.
In these views, 1 indicates the tower which has a cap 2 at its top which supports a vertically arranged hollow shaft 3 which is stationary. A frame 4: is rotatably mounted on the upper end of the shaft and this frame supports at one end the wind wheel 5 and its other end the tail 6. These parts are of the ordinary or any suitable construction.
The shaft 7 which is connected with the hub 0 of the wheel 5 is journaled in the frame 4 and has attached thereto a bevel gear 8 which meshes with a ring gear 9 fastened to the upper end of a tubular shaft 10 rotatably supported by the shaft 3 and which has collars 11 on its lower part to which the braces 12 are connected, these braces supporting the drum 13 which carries advertising matter or the like on its outer circumference. Advertising matter may also be placed on the tail Serial No. 258,884.
6. Ball bearings 14 are provided for the r0 tary parts.
A small casing 1a is carried by the upper end of the shaft 3 above the frame 4 and tubular arms 15 extend upwardly from the casing and are bent to support the lamps 16 in such a manner that the rays of light from said lamps will illuminate the advertising matter on the tail and on the drum. The conductors 1? for supplying current to the lamps pass through the hollow arms 15 and the shaft 3 and lead to a suitable source of supply.
A platform 18 is fastened to the upper end of the tower and has a trapdoor 19 therein arranged adjacent the upper end of the ladder 20 on the tower so that a person passing up the ladder can pass through the door and reach the platform to make repairs or inspect the upper parts of the device. This trapdoor may be provided with a lock to prevent unauthorized persons from reaching the platform. The outer ends of the arms 15 may be fastened together by the brace wire 21.
From the foregoing it will be seen that we have provided a simple form of advertising device which is operated by a wind wheel and the advertising matter of which can be illuminated at night, the rotation of the wheel being communicated to the drum through the gears and shafts, as will be understood.
Itis thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of our invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that we may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat we claim is An advertising device comprising a tower, a vertically arranged hollow shaftsupported at the top of the tower, a frame rotatably supported at the top of the saft, a wind wheel at one end of the frame, a tail at the other end of the frame, a second hollow shaft surrounding the first shaft and rotatably supported thereby, gears for connecting the upper end of the second shaft with the shaft of the wind wheel, a drum supported from the lower part of the second hollow shaft, a casing at the upper end of the first shaft, tubular arms connected with the casing and extending upwardly and outwardly lamps carried by said arms for illuminating the parts of the device, and conductors passing from the lamps through the arms and through the first shaft to a source of supply.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
