rlhis invention relates to earthenivare urinal stalls and has for its object the operation of the flush valve by a foot pedal.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
Figure 3.
An earthenWare urinal stall 1 has the usual base 2 and top 3. Through the back 4 extends a pipe 5 that is connected to the flushing valve 6 and discharges into the urinal through a nozzle 7 that directs a flat spraying stream against the back 4. The valve 6 is operated through the usual lever arm 8 by reciprocating rod 9 that through a gimbal joint 10 is connected to' a pedal rod 11 that extends through the urinal near the base and is adapted to be operated by a foot pedal 12. The lever arm 8 may tor example have several holes as shown at 8 and S to give the facility of connecting the rod 9 at different places.
Any other suitable connectino' means that Will give a variety of possible connections may be used. The pedal 12 is hinged at 13 to a base-plate 14 provided With a rear extension 15 (see Figure 5) that has a square or non-circular cross-section and its Within a corresponding hole in the earthenware and torms a guide for the rod 11 and a housing for a spring 16. The spring 16 serves to cause a retraction of the rod 11 and consequently of the valve 6 and the pedal 12 by pressing against a button or nut 17 on the outer end of the rod 11. A shoulder 18 on the pedal is adapted to bear against this button. The
base-plate 14 is held securely to the earthen- Ware by a pipe 19 that screws into the part 15 at its forward end and at the rear is provided With a clamping nut 2O that can be screwed up on the pipe 19 until it comes in firm contact with the rear ot the Wall 20. A
Serial No. 310,784.
flange 21 around the stall covers the joint between the Wall and stall.
TWith the combination ot' devices as above described, it will be seen that anyone using t-he urinal may flush the same by using the foot pedal Which is at once more convenient and more sanitary than the usual hand valve.
It is observable that the pedal and its tulcrum member as Well as the housing tor the spring, are supported on the'vertical Wall and that the pedal and its button are the only moving parts exposed. These features are important for it is very necessary that there should be no chance for the mechanism to get Wet, or thatJ there should be any pockets Where moisture might collect. Proper sanitation dictates that there shall be only drained surfaces exposed to falling Water and any mechanism on the floor, or Worse still, pockets in the floor are to be avoided.
The invention is not confined to the specific means illustrated and described, as any equivalent means may be substituted to suit various conditions.
I claim 1. A urinal comprising in combination a vertical stall having side Walls and a central recess, a drainage basin forming .a horizontal extension of the stall at the bottom, one of the side Walls having an orilice ext-ending through the same from front to rear at a point above the horizontal extension, a housing fitting Wit-hin and closing said orifice from the front, a pedal pivoted on said housing, a flushing va ve in rear of the stall and members extending through the housing connecting the pedal with the valve.
2. The combination of a urinal stall with flushing valve, a flushing nozzle at the upper part of the stall, a pipe connecting the valve and nozzle, a pedal located in front ot the stall adjacent the lower part, mechanism connecting the pedal through the stall With the flushing valve, and a base-plate to which the pedal is hinged, the said base-plate having a rear extension adapted to occupy a corresponding hole in the earthenware, said rear extension forming a housing for a spring adapted to retract the pedal.
3. A combination according to claim 2 in which the pedal is hinged to Jche base-plate, a pipe connecting the hase-plate with a nut at the rear of the eaithenware and the valve operating mechanism passing from Jche front to the rear through said pipe.
4. The combination of a urinal stall With a flushing valve in the rear of the stall, a flush ing nozzle at the uppei' part of Jshe stell, a pipe Connecting the valve and nozzle, a pedal located in front of the stall adjacentthe lower part, a rod passing through the stall Connecting the pedal with the valve, a base-plate for the pedal, a clamping nut at the back of the stall, and a pipe Connecting the baseplate and nut through which the valve operating mechanism passes;
