This invention relates to broiler ovens of the sliding drawer variety, and more especially to the form and structure of the drawers and to means for mounting and guiding such drawers relativeto the supporting stove or range bodies in connection with which they are used. As usual with such devices, our improved broiling device or oven drawer may be used in connection with any appropriate heat source, as for instance gas, oil or electric,

' preferably in the top part of the oven, and

radiating its heat downwardly.

The main objects of the invention are to provide an improved form and arrangement of broiler drawer and drawer fittings; to provide such a drawer adapted and arranged to give front door access to its interior and to accommodate forward and backward sliding of interchangeable broiler pans and the like therein; to provide improved and appropriate supports and guides adapted to accomplish this purpose and adapted for increased stability and security and for greater convenience in operation; to provide such means and mounting adapted to produce an underslung efi'ect whereby the oven drawer is practically suspended at all times from above, rather than carried on bottom rails or the like; to provide positive and improved auxiliary supporting means, including lateral tension members to carry or help support the outer part of the drawer when extended; to provide for operative and efiicient co-relation between the main support or coacting sliderails and the supplemental link means on each side of the oven; and to provide for said oven drawer an appropriate form of drawer and oven closing drop door andcombination latch and handle therefor.

An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown by the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 isa front elevation of the righthand side of a gas range having an ordinary form of baking oven in its upper part and a broiler oven drawer, to which this invention relates, in the lower part.

Fig. 2 is mainly a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, the closed position of the broiler drawer being shown by full lines and its open position being indicated by dotted lines.

Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the broiler drawer by itself, the front end of the drawer being at the right, and the drop door being open.

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section somewhat similar to Fig. 2, but on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, the drawer being closed.

Fig. 6 is like Fig. 5 except that the drawer open.

In the construction shown by the drawings, reference being had to Fig. 1, the range 1 is provided with the usual equipment, such as indicated at 2 on the left-hand side of Fig. 1, and with an ordinary baking oven 3 in the upper right-hand corner, together with the combination broiler oven 4, drawer 5 and door 6 wherein this invention mainly resides, in the lower right-hand corner, said drawer being adapted to receive interchangeable accessories, such as hereinafter mentioned. Referring more especially to Figures 2 and 3, the broiler oven 4 has a' top wall 7, a rear wall 8, a left side wall 9, a right side wall 10 and a floor 11. Adjacent to the top 7 is a gas burner 12 designed todirect its flame downwardly toward the broiler pan 13 and grid 14.

The drawer 5 is supported mainly by horizontal guideways 16 on the inner faces of the side walls 9 and 10, opposite the top part of the drawer, the latter having corresponding horizontal flanges 17 outstanding thereon to ride slidably in and upon the guides 16, in substantially tongue and groove relation.

In order to provide for desirable auxiliary support of the drawer 5 when open appro priate drawer end engaging means are provided including tension links 20 extending upwardly and rearwardly from the corner pivots 21 on the lower front part of the drawer.

The upper ends of these links are carried by pivotal shoes 22 formed to ride forwardly and backwardly in or upon horizontal guideways 23, disposed over the main guideways 16 and above the top edge of drawer 5. The forward movement of the drawer is limited by the shoes 22 reaching the front ends of their respective guide slots, as evident from Fig. 2.

The drawer 5 is of rectangular box shape with closed sides 25, bottom 26 and back 27, and with a front doorway 28 closed by the drop door 6, the latter serving also as an oven closure when the drawer is pushed back into the oven recess.

The said door 6 is hinged at 30 to the lower front edge of the drawer and is provided with lateral side links 31 to limit the downward swing, as is apparent from Figure 4. Gentrally located on the upper part of the door is an outstanding loop member or handle 33, back of which is a latch 34 of lever construction, centrally pivoted in or on the edge part of the door and having a catch part 35 on its inner end to engage the upper edge of the bar 36 disposed across the top front corner part of the drawer, the outer end 37 ofthe latch being disposed for convenient operation by the thumb of the attendant while the hand is gripping the adjacent handle, as will be apparent from Fig. 4. By this construction, the attendant may grasp the handle and pull the drawer open. Either simultaneously with the opening, or when the drawer is open, the latch may be operated and the door swung downward, as shown. The said latch closes by gravity, the inner end being-heavier than the outer end.

The opening of the'door' facilitates ready removal or interchange of the Pan 13 or other accessory member which is mounted slidably on any pair of the several sets of horizontal guides 40 provided on the inside of the lateral walls 25. Whenever desired, as sometimes occurs, accessmay be had to the contents of the broiler simply by opening the door 6 and drawing the slide pan 13 forward without any mevement'of the drawer as a whole, though usually it is preferable-to pull the drawer out also. v

The operation of the drawer and its supporting means will now be summarized.

Whenever ready access to the broiler or its contents is desired the drawer is moved forward by pulling manually on the handle 33,

. the guide rails 17 and pivot shoes 22 on the movable member 5 slide in the corresponding. guides 16 and 23 on to the oven walls 9 and 10, the weight being carried mainly by the rails 17, but more and more by upward lift on the handle by the operator as the drawer approaches the limit of its advance, until the drawer is fully opened, whereupon the links 20 become operative and assist in carrying the load and largely support the outer portion of the drawer. At this time the rear end of the drawer is held from sliding backward by means of the up-springing catch 45 in or upon the floor 11 of the oven.

When it is desired to close the drawer, a slight upward lift on the handle 33 tilts the of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the following claims:

We claim:

1. In a device of the character described, a broiler oven of the drawer type, access to the interior of wihch may be had from the front, lateral means adjacent to the top of said oven for guiding and mainly supporting the drawer member and auxiliary means including diagonal tension links disposed on each side to support the front part of the drawer from above when open.

2. In a stove of the character described, a broiler oven of the drawer type, said stove and oven having horizontally disposed complementary coacting main guide and sup- -which means include horizontal guideways fixed in said chamber and complementary coacting means on said drawer, and auxiliary means to help support the drawer when moved forward, the latter means including inclined tension links secured at their front ends to the lower front part of the drawer and having sliding shoe engagement with the upper part of said chamber, the latter having horizontal guides to receive the sliding parts and limit their forward movement.

4. A-stove having in combination, an open front broiler oven chamber, a forward sliding drawer having on its front end a door adapted and arranged to nomally close both the drawer and the oven chamber and a sliding pan in said drawer, said pan being movable forward for removal or interchange when said door is open, said drawer having diagonal tension links pivoted at one end to its lower front part and the other ends of said links having limited sliding engagement with the side walls of said'chamber adjacent to the top thereof.

mamas acting direct gravity supports disposed horizontally on the sides of said chamber and oven respectively to support the oven when closed, and supplemental supporting means and supplemental supporting means to share the load when the oven is disposed forwardly, said means comprising tension means adjacent to the top and compression means adjacent to the bottom of said chamber and oven, the lower said means being resilient and being automatically effective for sup port and release when the oven is pulled fully out and when lifted somewhat and pushed back respectively.

7. In a device of the character described an oven chamber, in combination with a broiler drawer therefor, a spring stop carried by one of said members to engage the lower part of the other when the drawer is pulled fully out and to oppose closure of the drawer, and means above said stop to limit the outward movement of said drawer and help support the latter when open.
