This invention relates to plumbing fixtures and has special reference to a bracket supporting device for the purpose oil facilitating the installation of plumbing fixtures such as lavatory bowls, sinks and other sanitary fixsupported from walls or floors.
in general, when fixtures are mounted upon the walls of buildings it is desirable to have the supporting members concealed behind the plaster, tile or other outer finish of the walls. Owing to the fact that such supporting members are concealed and that the on er wall or wall covering or other finish varies greatly in thickness it is diiheult to properly support the plumbing fixture on the solid part or framework of the wall and one important object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable bracket support which can be secured to the solid part or framework of the wall and which is capable of sucl adjustment that its outer or exposed ends may be flush with the wall surface no matter what the thickness of the finish is, reference being, of course, had to the ordinary limits of such thicknesses.
Another diiliculty that is experienced in the installation of plumbing fixtures, especially those supported on walls is that such fixtures when properly installed must usually be level and it sometimes happens that owing to the inequalities of the walls or defects in the setting up of the studding or frame the fixture cannot have its supporting brackets level if positioned flush on the surface of the wall finish.
ii. second important object of the invention is to provide an improved supporting means capable of such adjustment that the fixture may be installed in a level position without di'lliculty.
lVith the above and other objects in view as wi l be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
in the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views and:
1927. Serial No. 299,771.
1 Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the installation of a basin or lavatory bowl in its general position relative to the wall oft-he building.
Figure 2 is section through such a wall and showing the improved fixture and the bowl or sink supporting brackets carried thereby.
l igure 3 is a face view of the supporting fixture and a pair of brackets supported thereby.
Figure 4 is a plan view of one form of the supporting device.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a modified form of such device.
Figure 6 is a view showing a modified form of the device.
Figure 7 is a detail end view of the adjusting sleeve.
Referring particularly to Figures 2, 3 and 1 it will be seen that in this form of the device the invention consists of a pair of end plates 10 vertically elongated and provided at their adjacent sides with lateral extensions 11 having rabbets 12 so that they may overlap and yet maintain the plates 10 in alignment. ltach of these rabbeted por tions has a slot 13 and through these slots passes the adjusting or securing bolt 14 which thus secures the plates 10 in adjustably spaced relation in the well known manner common to bolt and slot connections. Suit able screw holes 15 are provided in the memhere 11 so that these parts may be screwed on to iframe members or studding 16. Each 01 the plates 10 is provided with a pair of vertically spaced hollow bosses 17 internally threaded to receive the inner ends of adjusting sleeves 18 which are externally threaded to screw into these bosses from the front. ltach of these sleeves is provided at its front portion with a partial closure 19 having a small central opening 20 therein and at this end the sleeve is also provided with a screw 9, kerif 21. The rear end of each boss is provided with a closure 22 and extending orwardly from this closure is an inner boss 23 the boss and end being provided with a screw threaded opening to receive the threaded end 24: of a bolt having a head 25, the bolt passing out through the opening 20.
The form shown in Figure 5 is similar to that shown in Figure 4 except that the lateral extensions 11 are omitted and pipe lugs 26 are provided for connection by means of a nipple 27 of any desired length so that the nipple forms a spacing means between the plates 10. In the form shown in Figure 6 the parts are of the same general character but in place of a rearwardly extending hollow boss there is provided a forwardly extending externally threaded boss 28 on which screws an adjusting sleeve 29 and the bolt 30 passes through a screw threaded opening in the boss 28 and plate 31. Lavatory bowls and the like are usually supported on brackets 32 and as will be seen in Figure 2 when it is desired to install such brackets and bowls the support is secured to the studding l6 and the sleeves are screwed outwardly until their outer ends are brought flush with the desired wall surface which is then applied to the studding or other support (the constructive details of the wall not being deemed necessary to be shown). Then the wall is finished and the brackets 32- rested against the ends of the sleeves l8 and the bolts inserted and screwed up so that the bracket is clamped against the exposed ends of the sleeves and thus does not depend on the wall finish for its support. Obviously, if the wall is out of perpendicular one or the other of the sleeves may be screwed out to bring the vertical leg of the bracket perpendicular and the remaining leg horizontal so that the basin B may rest level thereon.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material ,spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. In an article supporting device, a pair of threaded members each adapted to be secured to a fixed object and each having a threaded opening, sleeves each having adjustable screw engagement with a respective member and projecting forwardly from said members, the sleeve and tubular member constituting means whereby the extent of projection of the sleeve may be adjusted for varying thicknesses of walls, and bolts each passing into a respective sleeve and engaging the threaded opening of the respective member, and means to secure the members in adjustably spaced relation.
2. In an article supporting device, a pair of tubular members each internally threaded and provided with means for attachment to a fixed object, a pair of externally threaded sleeves screwed. into said members to project therefrom at one end, the sleeve and tubular member constituting means whereby the extent of projection of the sleeve may be adjusted for varying thicknesses of walls, the remaining end of each member being provided with a closure having a screw threaded aperture, bolts extending through said sleeves into said apertures, and means to secure the members in adjustably spaced relation.
8. In an article supporting device, a pair of plates adapted to be secured to a part of a house frame, means to secure said plates together in adjustment laterally with respect to each other, hollow internally threaded bosses extending rearwardly from each plate and provided each with a rear end having a relatively small central 2111C tnreaded aperture,
sleeves each externally threaded and screwed into a respective boss and projecting forwardly therefrom, and bolts entering said sleeves from the front and screwed into the threaded apertures.
4:. In an article supporting device for plumbing fixtures, a plate adapted to rest against the scantlings of a house, a pair of hollow elongated bosses formed on said plate and extending rearwardly therefrom and opening forwardly through said plate, each of said bosses having its rear end closed and provided with a threaded opening, said bosses being internally threaded from front to rear, elongated sleeves each fitted in a respective boss and externally threaded from end to en d m and adapted to have their forward ends flush with the face of the plaster on the scantling, and bolts each extending through a respective sleeve and screwed into the threaded opening i VICTOR n. scnninnnxnncnr.
