`ein v1 ARTHUR HESS, 0F LGS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNR OF ONE-HALF TO SAIVUL L` MARSH, OF LOS ANGELES, GALFGRNIA.
BRACKET-HANGER BACKING.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ARTHUR Hass, a citizen of the United States, and resident ot Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State ot California, have invented neuT and useful Improvements in a Bracket- Hanger Backing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a backing adapted to be concealed in partit-ions, Walls, and like places. It is the primary object thereof to 'provide a support for room fixtures, for illustration, plumbing fixtures. The support embodied in the present invention is arranged to be attached` to seine strong, durable, component of the building.
Plumbing ixtures are commonly 1nou`nted upon bolts, hangers, supports, and like devices which are secured in and to the Walls or partitions ot the building. Many of these Walls are built ot material which is sott and does not otter sulicient strength to withstand the strain placed thereon by the Weight o1 the fixture. The result is that the support pulls out of the Wall With resultant damage. lAnother object of this invention is to provide a support which is adjustable to the fixture or hanger requirements and also to the character of the building coinponent to which it is attached.
These objects together `with other objects and corresponding accomplishments are obtained by means ot the embodiment ot my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
-ligl is an elevation ot a complete backing, showing how it would be mounted upon a. vent pipe, the latter being shown in dot and dash lines; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a section as seen on the line 3-3 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through a Wall equipped with my improved backing and having a lavatory supported thereby.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the backing comprises a rectangular trame comprising an upper or hanger bar 5, a lower bar 6, and side bars 7. As the side bars are the same in structure, it Will only be necessary to describe one. rlhe bars are preferably ot metal and may be ot any desired shape. Bar 6 has holes 8 extending tl'ierethrough and adapted to 'receive the Shanks of bolts. The side bars 7 have bolt holes spaced throughout the length thereof.
In the present instance, the side bars are shown as formed of angle irons, but it is obvious thatthe invention is not limited to this particular shape.
The bar 5 is provided at the ends with slide members 10 to permit the bar to be moved upwardly or downwardly upon the side bars. In the slides are elongated bolt holes 11 arranged to be registered with the holes 9. Bolts 12 extend therethrough lor fastening the upper bar 5 to the side bars. 'lhe structure is such as to providefor corrN paratively line adjustment ot the position or the top bar 5 on the trame. lnitial adjustment is made by selecting proper bolt holes 9 upon the side bars and linal adjustment by means o1q the elongated bolt holes 1l' in the hanger bar. l
The hanger bar is provided with holes 13 adapted to receive the shanks et bolts. En tending longitudinally ot the hanger bar is a rail ll tornied ot suitable straps shaped to provide an undercut channel or slot for the passage therethrough of the Shanks or bolts er like members. The channel is large enough to receive the heads ot `the bolts. Bolts et' this shape are indicated by 16. lt is obvious that bolts 1G may be moved along the hanger bar to any position desired.
Suppose the lixture to be hung or supported by the backing is a lavatory, indicated by 17 in el. The usual vent pipe therefor is indicated by 18 and is disposed within the Wall. Such a vent pipe Will ve as a suitable support for the backing. Betere the Walls are tinished or plastered, the backing is placed in position on the vent pipe by embracing the latter with tl-bolts 19 and 2G, these bolts being passed through selected bolt holes in bars 5 and 6. Bar 5 is adjusted in position upon the side bars as may be desired for the particular case. The usual bracket hanger Q0 or a teinplet therefor is disposed in its ultimate position to locate the proper position oit bolts 16. These bolts are then locked in their position, and the job is ready for the plaster-ers. l/Vhen they have completed their Work the only visible portion of the backing is the projecting bolts 16. ln finishing the job, the bracket hanger 2O is placed over the bolts and is secured in position thereon by the bolt nuts. The lavatory can then be hung in position. rlhe tixture is thus supported by lthe backing rather than by the wall.' Repair bracket hanger when in position covers the disturbed portion of the finish.
What l claim is:
l. A backing of the character described comprising a. reetangularframe formed oi: bars having a hanger bar adjustably mounted on the .intersecting bars so as to be mov able to and from lthe parallel bar and provided with anelongated slot, means on the hanger bar for Securing said Jframe to a supporting member, means on said parallel bar for securing said frame to said supportingmember and bolts in said slot with their Shanks extendingforwardly therethrough.
2. A backing as specified in claim l characterized by the elongated slot in said hanger bar beingformed by an undercut channel extending longitudinally of the hanger bar, and said bolts being mounted with their heads in said channel.
3. A backingof the character described comprising' a rectangular frame provided with side bars having'bolt holes spaced longitudinally, a hanger bar mounted on said side bars for lateral adjustment, said hanger bar having elongated bolt holes for registration with said first mentioned bolt holes and being provided with a longitudinally extending undercut. slot, and means tor securing said :trame to a 'supporting member.
4. A backingY as speciiied in claim 3 characterized by. said means comprising a U- bolt and said frame having bolt holesto vreceive the legs of said U-bolt.
In a. backing;` of the character described, the combination of a rectangular frame provided with side bars having bolt holes spaced longitudinally7 a hanger bar mounted on saidV side bars for lateral adjustment, said hanger bar. having elongated bolt. holes for registration With said first mentioned bolt holes and beingl provided with a longitudinally extending undercut slot, bolts to secure said hanger bars to said side bars, means for securing' said frame to a supporting member7 and bolts` mounted with their heads in said slots and their Shanks extending therethrough. A
In Witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 12th dayot March, 1925.
ARTHUR nnss.
