This invention relates to a combination stop and tail light.
The chief object of the invention is to provide a unit assembly consisting ot but a minimum number of parts and these so arranged as to be readily assembled and secured in assembled relation with minimum diliiculty.
@ne feature of the invention consists in the provision ot an insulated support readily receivable by a combination stop and tail light casing and adapted to convey energy to a pair of light bulbs', one mounted in a stop light compartment for stop light purposes and the other mounted in a tail light compartment tor tail light purposes and the 'formation of the compartments by a partition bracket which in addition to forming the compartments serves as a support and retainer tor the respective light bulbs mounted in the compartments and also serves as a support tor the combination light closure and the insulated support when desired.
The full nature ot the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the cover and light bulbs removed. `Fig. 3 is a central sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and in the direction ot the arrows. Fig. e is a perspective view ot the sae dle and terminal support in detached relation.
In the drawings 10 indicates a casing torming the shell ot a combination stop and tail light. rlhe casing has the aperture 11 'tor directing rays downwardly upon a license plate by the tail light 12. The lens or closure 13 is mounted by means of the rim let on the casing and completely closes the same, said rim including a transverse portion 14a that is anchored at 15 to a partition 16 forming two compartments 17 and 1S, 17 containing light bulb 12 and 1S containing light bulb 19 and reflector 9. The partition in turn includes a pair of angularly extending ears 2O by which the partition is secured to the casing 10 and which are similar to ears 15.
rlhe casing 10 includes the apertures 21 countersunk at 22 to receive threaded bolts 23 rigidly anchored therein by the washer or retainer ring 24. Studs 28 serve as supports for the light. An extension 25 ot the partition is depressed at 26, forming a socltet which over-lies the stud 23 in chamber 1S, and is apertured at 'l' to receive the reflector anchorage 8. The extension 25 serves as an aligning member since when the recess 26 is seated over stud 28, the apertures 27 in the partition cars 2O register with apertures formed in the casing 10 so that the partition may be readily secured in predetermined relation. Each aperture 27 is threaded to receive a bolt presented trom outside the casing. Thus the entire light may be assembled as units and then united externally.
The casing supports a tubular socket SO which is provided with tl-slots tor contact plug reception and slidably mounted therein is the multiple circuit plug formed ot a cylindrical insulation body portion 32 with a circular tlange or face 33 milled or tlatted at 3st for abutment adjacent the partition 1S when in assembled relation. The partition thus serves as an aligner for positioning the support 32 in predetermined relation relative to the slots 31. In a groove 35 transverse to the flat tace 34 and in the trent tace of the circular tlange 33 is mounted a pair ot spring contacts 37 and 38, the former extending longitudinally trom the flange 33 and substantially parallel to the partition 16. The latter extends angularly and at approximately Ll5 degrees to the longitudinal extension and the flange portion 33. Screws A39 position the spring contacts upon the insulation body and extend rearwardly and have threaded conneet-ion with the tubular current conducting members Il() each of which slidably supports a contact member in inverted relation similar to the member Ll() and indicated by the numeral al. The two telescopically associated meinbers 4l() and l1 form a chamber 42 in which is mounted a spring l?) for normally maintaining contact member 41 in the projected position tor contacting terminal contact carried by the plug receivable by the soclret portion 40. The spring contacts 37 and 38 and the insulation body are a separate unit readily receivable by the tubular socket 30.
The partition 16 is apertured at 50 to receive the light bulb 19 and projecting into chamber 18 are the arcuate lips 51 constituting an aligning support for the light bulb. EX- tending oppositely therefrom and arranged in spaced relation and at 90 degrees thereto are the angular bulb guiding extensions 52 which adjacent the anchorage thereoi' to the partition at 53 are relieved to permit the passage ot the pins carried by the light bulb. The inwardly directed angular ends oi' eX- tension 52 limit axial bulb seating movement. The light'bulb is thereupon rotated ninety degrees to seat said pins in recesses 54 formed at the junction of the arcuate aligning lips with the partition,
The partition 16 rigidly supports a saddle having the anchoring outwardly directed jf r ilanges anchored as at 61 and the parallel side walls 62 connected by an inclined straddling portion 63 provided with an opening 70 having the lips 71 at opposite sides thereof and directed outwardly and oppositely Jtroni the lips 51. rlhe oppositely extending bulb guiding angular members are indicated by the numeral 72 and terminate bulb travel limiting inwardly directed ends and the relieved portions for pin passage adjacent thereto are indicated by the nu il .73 and the pin receiving seats are indicated by the numeral 74, the same being similar to 'the identical construction formed in the partition itself. rlhe result is a light bulb support at 45 degrees for the light bulb 12. As shown the light bulb 19 engages contact 8? and light bulb 12 engages contact 38 and thus the circuit is completed to each. The bulb guiding extensions maintain predetermined positioning of the bulb when mount-ed.`
As a further means of positioning parts in predetermined relation, and it desired the same may be utilized for maintaining the terminal support 32 upon the partition 16 prior to linal assembly, and for such purpose the insulation flange 33 includes the recess 66 at each side and extending into the same :trom each side wall 62 ot the saddle is a clamping tongue 67, see Fig. il, whichshows the same in detached relation. Preferably reflector 9 is secured to the partition pri-or to the anchorage of the latter to the casing.
The resultant construction permits the partition to support the insulation body 32 with the current conducting connection and serves as a support therefor in positioning the same in the tubular socket 80. Positioning of the aforesaid in the tubular socket 30 serves, when the body 32 is seated, to align the partition with the body openings when the tongue 25 with the socket 26 is in registration with the stud 28.
The invention claimed is:
1. ln a light construction, including a casing, and a partition forming two compartments therein, the combination of an insulation plug, a pair of terminal conducting contacts insulatably supported thereby, a pair of angularly arranged bulb receiving sockets supported adjacentthereto and in angular relation to said contacts, one socket being transverse to the plug axis, said sockets positioning a bulb in each compartment, and a pair ot terminal spring contacts connected to said tiret-mentioned contacts, one of the second-mentioned contacts being L-shaped with one arm projecting outwardly in longitudinal alignment with the insulation plug and the other contact being if-shaped and er:- tending angularly thereof and of the longitudinal contact, the 'tree end of the ll-shaped contact extending toward the tree end of the l.-shaped contact.
2. ln a combination stop and tail light construction, a casing, a multiple compartment forming transverse plate partition therein extending completely across the same and from front to back, a saddle supported thereby having a portion inclined to the plate and in spaced relation therewith, and a pair of light bulb-receiving anchorages, one provided in said saddle inclined port-ion and another in the pa age.
3. A device as delined by claim 2, characteriaed by addition ot' an insulation plug carried by thecasing, a pair ot terminal conducting contacts insulatibly supported thereby, said light bulb-receiving anchorages being arranged in angular relation thereto, one being transverse to the plug anis, a pair oit terminal spring contacts connected to said first mentioned contacts, one of the second mentioned contacts being l -shaped and projecting outwardly in longitudinal alignment the with the insulation plug and parallel to the partition and the other being V-shaped and extending angularly of the plug and ot the longitudinal contact and in parallel relation to the saddle inclined portion, the free end ot the. wf-shaped contact extending toward the tree end of the L-shaped Contact.
4. A device as delined by claim 2, characterized by the addition of an insulation plug carried by the casing, a pair of terminal conduct-ing contacts insulatably supported thereby, said light bulb receiving anchorages being arranged in angular relation thereto, one being transverse to the plug anis, a pair ot terminal spring contacts connected to said tirst'mentioned contacts, one oi' tne second mentioned contacts being L-shaped and project-ing outwardly in longitudinal alignment with the insulation plug and parallel to the partition and the other being V-shaped and extending angularly of the plug and of the longitudinal cont-act and in parallel relation to the saddle inclined portion, the tree end oit the il-shaped contact extending toward the free end of the ilu-shaped Contact, and cooperating portions on the insulation body and rtition adjacent the saddle anchori tactsinsulatably partition and on the partition and saddle portion for predetermined positioning oi' the body, partition and saddle portion and :tor anchoring the saine together.
