This invention relates to improvements in bench planes and resides in the provision of a strong, durable and eflicient single bit plane which will be simple as to construction and comparatively inexpensive, yet easy to operate and reliable in use.
One of the objects 01": the invention is to provide a single bit plane of the character de scribed in which the bit and its associated parts may be more quickly, easily and accu rately adjusted than is possible with planes such as heretofore constructed.
Another object of the invention is to provide ameans tor adjusting the chip breaker which may be readily, easily and accurately operated to best adapt the plane for effective use in working with hard and knotty woods, the said adjusting means being located in a convenient and readily accessible position.
A further object of the invention is to provide an assemblage of the bit, chip breaker and operating means therefor, in a compact form whereby the adjusting means may be readily and easily operated and the balance of the plane is improved as well as the general efiiciency thereof.
A further Object is to provide an arrangement of the bit, chip breaker and adjusting mechanisms associated therewith such that the plane may be readily and easily assembled and disassembled.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion,
size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificin any of the advantages of the invention.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanving drawing, the plane body 1 is provided at its terminals with the usual hand grips 2 and 3 and between its ends with the usual bit slot 4; extending transversely of the body. Rearwardly of this slot and extending upwardly between the flanges 5 on the body is a web or frog portion generally designated 6, which portion presents an inclined surface on which the bit 7 is slidably supported so that the cutting edge 8 of the bit is disposed in the slot 1.
To provide for the adjustment of the bit to true cutting edge with the bottom of the plane, the frog 6 at its upper portion is countersunk as at 9. to receive a circular disk 10 mounted on a central screw pivot 11 and engaged against the under side of the bit. An adjusting lever 12, preferably formed integral with the disk 10, extends outwardly from the disk beneath the bit. A screw 13 is mounted on the disk 10 to one side of the center pivot 11 and its head slidably engages in a longitudinally extending recess 1% formed in the under side of the bit. On moving the lever back and forth, the head of the screw engaging in the recess let causes the bit to be shifted in such manner that the cutting edge thereof may be disposed in proper alignment with the bottom of the bit.
To provide for longitudinal adjustment of the bit to regulate the depth of the planing or cutting action, there is provided and adjusting lever 15 mounted in a recess or open the lower rounded end 21 of the lever is slid' egrscrew 22:is 6X-' ably engaged; rinmadjustin tended through the sleeve with its lower, end extended into a bore 23 provided in the lower part of the web. The lower end of the screw is provided with a head 24 which engages the lower end "of asl'eeve 25"removably'held in the bore by a set screw 26. In this way the screw is held'against withdrawal and longitudinal movement and may rotate freely as is necessary to-move the sleeve l9'back and forth On the outer end of the screwis a knurled head 27 so disposed that it may be readily grasped-to eflect the turningot the screw. On turning the screw in a clockwise direction, the sleeve 19 and yoke 20are moved upward and rearward and as said yoke engages with the rounded lower end 21 of the lever, said lever will be rocked so that the upper endthereof is moved downwardly. As this end of the lever is engaged in the openingl8 of the bit,'suchmovement thereof will push. the bit downward. Turning of the screw in'the opposite direction will retract the bit' or lift it. But a slight movement of the screw is necessaryt-o change the position of the cutting edge of thebit and by this mechanismthe adjustment of the bit may be quickly, easily and accurately eifected. As
the yoke 20 is moved upward or downward with the-sleeve, it is free to sliderelativeto the rounded end 21 of the lever while maintaming the proper engagement of the lever necessary to etlect the rocking-thereofwitheach minute turning of' the screw to thereby produce adjustment of the bit. Likewise the upper end otthe, lever is arranged so as to provide for tree engagement thereof in the opening 18 while maintaining the proper en-v gagement or the bit necessary to secure ac curacy of adjustment. This adjusting means is accurate and reliable in operation and subject -to beingrreadily and easily assembled and disassembled.
The chip breaker 28 is mountedupon the upper side of the bit and is bowed between its ends so that it engages with the bit at its ends only, thus leaving a'space sufiicient to permit of the protrusion and free movement of the upper end of the lever 15 throughthe opening 18 during the adjustment of the bit.
The chip breaker is held in place and adjust-; ment thereof provided for by the combined clamp and adjusting means, which means generally comprises a clamping plate 29 and an adjusting lever 30. The plate 29 is recessed on its under side between its side edges as at 31 to facilitate the mounting of the lever 30 in place and the proper association of the lever with the chip breaker and plate, although the lower transverse edge of this plate is engaged with the upper side of the chip breaker. By this adjusting and "locking 'means, not" onlyis provision made for adjustment of the chip breaker "but-"the locking of thechip its breaker and bit assembly in the proper position is provided for. The adjusting means is such that very accurate and fine adjustments of the chip breaker may be made easily and quickly. The locking mechanism is such that it may be readily unlocked to effect the removal of the chip breaker. It will be noted that this may be effected without disturbing the assembly and adjustment of the bit.
The chip breaker is provided approximately centrally of its ends with a lug 28 which engages the bit. This permits a flexing of the chip breaker when the screw 34: is pressed tight against it and at the same time insures a rigidity of the assembly sufficient to prevent chattering of the bit.
I claim:
1. A plane comprising a body portion having a bit slot therein, a bit adjustably supported upon the body portion and extending through the slot, a chip breaker mounted upon the bit, a lever mounted upon the chip breaker, a fastening extending through the chip breaker and lever and serving as a pivot for the lever, a block mounted upon the fastening, a clamping plate mounted upon the chip breaker and having an opening therein in which said block is slidably engaged, a pin carried by the body portion and engaging the upper side of the clamping plate, and a set screw adjustable in said clamping plate and engaged with the chip breaker, said lever having a slot extending eccentrically with relation to the pivot therefor, through which slot the set screw extends.
2. A plane comprising a body portion having a bit slot therein; a bit adjustably supported upon the body portion and extending thru the slot; a chip breaker mounted upon the bit; a lever pivotally mounted on said chip breaker; a clamping plate held stationary relatively to the body, said lever having a slot extending eccentrically with relation to the pivot thereof; and clamping means movably secured in said clamping plate and engaging said eccentric slot so as to allow the axial adjustment of the chip breaker by the pivotal movement of said lever.
3. A plane comprising a body portion having a bit slot therein; a bit adjustably supported upon the body portion and extending thru the slot; a chip breaker mounted upon the bit; a lever pivotally mounted on said chip breaker; a clamping plate held stationary relatively to the body; said lever having a slot extending eccentrically with relation to the pivot thereof; clamping means movably secured in said clamping plate and engaging said eccentric slot so as to allow the axial adjustment of the chip breaker by the pivotal movement of said lever; and a block mounted over the pivot of the lever, said clamping plate having an opening therein in which said block is slidably engaged.
4:. A plane comprising a body portion having a bit slot therein; a bit adjustably supported upon the body portion and extending thru the slot; a chip breaker mounted upon the bit; a lever pivotally mounted on said chip breaker; a clam ing plate held stationary relatively to the ody, said lever having a slot extending eccentrically with relation to the pivot thereof; and a clamping screw adjustable in said clamping plate and engaged with said chip breaker, said screw extending thru said slot so as to allow adjustment of the chip breaker relatively to the bit by the pivotal movement of said lever.
