Fig. 5 is a similar view of a guiding andl supporting element adapted to co-operate with a laterally-projecting stub on the lifter. Referring to the drawings, designates a gate frame of any suitable construction hinged at one end, as at 11, to a post 12, and equipped at the opposite end with a vertical locking bar 13' which is slidably fitted to guide fixtures 14 on the gate frame and is movable into and out of locking relation with a base socket 15 or other suitably-disposed keeper.
rllhe lifting element preferably embodies a split collar or sleeve 16 which is suitably located on and permanently secured to the bar 13. This collar has integral therewith forwardly and rearwardly extending iinger pieces 17 which facilitate the manipulation of the bar, andl it is also provided with an integral radial stub 18 whichleXtends toward and at a right angle to the adjacent end of the gate frame. The stub is preferably of V-form in cross section, and has an upper angular shouldered portion 19V at its inner or basal end.
The guiding and supporting element embodies an elongated member 20`extending longitudinally of the gate frame. rfhis member is formed with a verticalv channel 21 which receives and guides the stud 18 of the locking bar. The lower portion of the channel terminates ina recessed or bifurcated projecting foot 22 which is so locatedthat it receives thelstub 18 when the bar 13 is in its downposition and in locking engagement with the socket or keeper. The walls of the foot 22 are preferably rounded, as at 23, so as to co-operate with the tapering walls of the stub to`,facilitate the entrance of the latter into the foot. When the stub'is thus seated in the foot, the shoulder 19 overhangs the outer or free end of the foot. Hence the bow 2,4 ofaI padloclnas 25, can be readily hooked over the associated parts in the space between the shoulder and the heel of the foot, which bow, when the lock is snapped, ef.- fectually locks'the Stub and foot together, thuspreventing the liftingof the locking bar until the padlock is unlocked and removed.
The'upper portion of the rearward wall of the member 20 is extendedlaterally, and is providedon its inner face with a series of transverse upwardly inclined teeth 26 with any ofl which the stub may be engaged when the bar is lifted and the gate unlocked. Thus. the bar can be supported with its lower end at any desired elevation to enable it to clear the ground elevations, railroad rails, or other obstructions when the gate is being swung open.
While my invention is herein illustrated as embodied in a single gate it is obvious that it can be readily applied to double gates, `and also that the construction may be modiiied within the principle of the invention and the scope ot the appended claims.

The combination with a gate struct-ure, of a vertically-movable locking bar thereon, a keeper i'or the bar, a stub extending tixedly :trom said bar toward the gate structure, a recessed projection extending iixedly from the gate structure toward the said bar and adapted to receive the stub when the locking bar is engaged with the keeper, and means for locking together the said stub and gate projection.

The combination with a gate structure, of a vertically-movable locking bar thereon, a keeper for the bar, a stub extending iixedly from the bar toward the gate structure, a recessed projection extending tixedly from the gate structure toward the said bar and adapted to receive the stub when the locking bar is engaged with the keeper, said stub having a shouldered portion which overlies the tree end ot' the projection, and lock means including a bow tor engaging said stub and proj ection between the shouldered portion and the gate structure.
5. The combination with a gate structure, ot a vertically-movable locking bar thereon, a keeper tor the bar, a lateral stub of V-cross-` section extending from said bar toward the gate structure, and a relatively fixed projection on said structure having upstanding walls rounded at their upper edges and adapted to embrace the said stub when the' locking bar is engaged with the keeper, and lock means including a bow tor engaging said stub and projection.

The combination with a gate structure, ot a vertically-movable locking bar thereon, a keeper for the bar, a lifter tast on said bar and having a stub extending laterally toward the gate structure, a stub guiding and supporting fixture on the gate structure includ ing a biturcated toot arranged and adapted to receive the said stub when the locking bar is engaged with the keeper, and means for locking together said stub and foot.v
7, The combination with a gate structure, ot a vertically-movable locking bar thereon, a keeper tor the bar, a litter on said bar having a lateral stub extending toward the gate structure, and a stub guiding and supporting iixture on the gate structure, said iixture com* prising an elongated body having a vertical stub-guiding channel terminating at its lower Vportion in a recessed toot adapted to receive the said stub when the locking bar is engaged with the keeper and having also a series of spaced teeth above said toot adapted to receive the stub and support the bar at diiferent heights trom the ground when the bar is lifted from the keeper.
