Description

Dec. 17, 1929. 4 T. 'H. KINGSTON 1,739,904
LEDGER BOARD CLAMP Filed Jan 26, 1927 THOMAS H. KrNosTomor was-r SOMERVILLE, raAssAerrasnTTs,AssIGNon, BYMESNE ASSIGNMENTS, To FEANKG. KINGSTON, or soivrniavinnn', A. ROY KINGSToN, on An- LINeToN, CHARLES C. PIMM, or SOMEBVILLE, AN MABEL e, KITCHEN; or SOMER- VILLE, IVIASSACETUSETTS, A PARTNERSHIP DOING SCAFFOLDING- COMPANY LEDGER-BOABD CLAMP Application filed January. 26, 1321' SeriatNo. 163,787.
I This invention relates to a clamp device and moreparticularly to a clamp device for use in securing ledger boards to uprights without the use of nails in erecting scalfolding for the construction of buildings.
It is an Object of the invention to produce a sturdy serviceable device of few parts which may be rapidly applied to or removed from scafi'olding in the erection or dismantling thereof.
It is a further object of the invention to produce a clamp device wherein the parts thereof need not be separated, and thereafter assembled, for the purpose of applying or removing it from scaffolding as in the past but which are of such construction and arrangement as to constitute a unit, certainv parts of which are relatively movable but not separable from the other parts to permit the said device to be applied to or removed from its operative position.
'Another object of the invention is to produce a clamp device, portions of which are relatively movable but not separable having locking means arranged to act in conjunction with pressure applying means to positively retain certain of the movable parts in firm co-operation when in use.
Other objects of the invention will be fully understood from a description of the drawing and the claim hereinafter given.
Of the drawing.
Figure 1 represents an inside face view of a portion of a scaffolding showing a portion of a ledger board secured to an upright by means of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail of some of the parts shown. in Figure 2 but showing them moved to permit of the application of theclamp to the scaffolding or its removal therefrom.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the lock member used in connection with the pressure applying devices to retain. certain ofthemovable parts of the clamp infirm co-operation when in use.
Figure 5 is a section onthe line 55 of Figure 1.
Like characters represent like parts Referring to the drawing? The drawing herewith illustrates'a typeof clam for frictionally securing a board, Lsuoh Y Q as a edger .board 10, to an uprightorj'oistf.
'11 as is required in erecting "scaffolding for member 12 having the screw threaded limbs 13 and 14, co-actingwith theclamp member Y or bar 15 and provided with: nuts 16 to clamp Erica Bus ness as UiLiJ RS BATENT throughout the several figures of the drawin s.
the'board' 1 0-and joistll togetherin a firm I and substantially. relatively immovable man- 11 p I Itjis an object of the invention to so arrange the velampthat itsiparts may be moved, to :adyust It to the scaffolding, but not sep arated forthat purpose, and to that end the bar 15 anda nut 16 are passed onto the limb 13 whereupon the end of the limb is upset to form an enlargement 17 thereon whichprevents the said nut' and bar from being re-. I
moved from the limb. U V
The limb 14 has a channel plate or look its end is upset to form the enlargement 19 to prevent theremoval of the said plate 18 and I nut16.-
I The bar 15. has a smooth bore hole therein 4 f through which the limb13 passes and a notch 20 at its other end to engage the limb 14 by WlElCll means the saidbar-may be swung onthe, limb 13 to' cause the notch20 to engage ing a locking member to prevent lateral swing.
ofthe bar 15 and its disengagement from the limb 14.
' To apply the clamp to'theledger board and upright, the nuts 16 will be turned on the I screw threaded limbs 18 and 14, a sufl'icient amount to permit the bolt member 12 and bar 15 to be moved away from each other to comfortably receive the upright and board between them and to permit the said bar to be swung past the plate 18 which will be slid member 18 and a nut 16passed thereon before v 7 along the limb 14 with the nut 16 so that an opening will be formed between the limbs 13 and '14 for the passage of the clamp device into operative position. 7
When the device has been placed in position with the limbs 13 and 14 straddling the upright and board as seen in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, the bar 15 w1ll be swung downwardly to engage the notch with the limb 14, whereupon the plate 18 will be caused to engage the bar 15 so that the side ribs 22 will confine the bar between them after which they nuts 16 will be set up to tightly clamp the board to the upright.
It will be readily seen that the plate 18 ef 'fectively prevents the disengagement of the bar 15 andlimb 14 when the device is in operative position. '7
It is knownthat clamp devices have been used which'had to be dismounted or partially so in order to apply or remove them from the scaffolding but itis not known that clamp devices of the class-described have ever been used wherein the parts thereofwere relatively movable but not separable or wherein locking means for'certain of the parts was provided to co-act with pressure applying means -to effectively prevent the. accidental relative movement of those parts.
Having described the invention I claim: Aledger board clamp'consi'sting of a rod round in cross-section throughout its length and of substantially uniform diameter .and
l which is U-shaped providing parallel limbs the extremity ofeach limb being threaded, a
vstraight bar pivoted at one end to one limb and free to slide along such limb and having and reaching to one edgeof the bar and situ- .atedto move over or from the other limb Hwhen the bar is swung on its pivotal connection, a nut on the threaded part of each limb at its other end a notch extending crosswise and a plate between the nut on the limb with which said notch cooperates having a lateral projection situated to cover the open end of the slot and each of said limbs having its end enlarged to prevent the nut on the limb passing ofi the limb.
Signed by me at Clearwater, Florida, this 3rd day of December, 1926.
' V THOMAS HLKINGSTON.
