The feed nut has a flange 27 on its lower end and a toothed wheel 28 on its upper end between which the bearing 26 has a running fit to the shaft support for vertical movement with the feed nut.
The shaft support 24 has a bore 29, in which the top of the outer shaft is rotatable, and a counterbore 30 surrounded by flanges 31 and 32 between which the flange of the head 23'has a running fit. i
The shaft support is divided on the centerline of the bore 29 into two parts 33 and 34 to permit the same to be attached to the head 23 and the two parts are connected by bolts 35.
The driving pulley 19 has a sleeve 36 formed integral with its hub and adapted to rotate in a U-shaped extension or bearing 37 which is carried by the part 34 and has a running fit between the hub ofthe driving pulley anda collar 38 secured on the sleeve 36.'
The flanges 31 and 32 form a thrust bearing for the flange of the head 23, the flange 27 and the toothed wheel 28 fix the shaft support for vertical movement with the feed nut, and the hub of the driving pulley and the collar -38 fix the driving pulley for. vertical movement with the shaft support, thus holding the feed nut, the outer shaft, and the driving pulley in fixed relation to one another and positively moving the driving pulley along the driving shaft as the outer and the inner shafts are moved vertically.
The flanged head 23 of the outer shaft carries a pin 39 which engages the teeth 40 of the toothed wheel 28 in succession and rotates the feed nut to move the same along the feed screw and advance the outer and inner shafts a predetermined distance during each revolution of the outer shaft.
The outer and inner shafts may be raised and lowered manually by turning a hand crank 41 which is attached to the upper end `of the feed screw and provided with a locking Ascrew 42 to hold the crank and the feed screw against turning when the machine is in operation.. Y
The tension of the belt 17 may be adjusted by a belt tightener which has a supporting arm 43 held in adjusted positions in the part Y 34 by a set screw 44 and carrying a shaft 45 upon which an idler pulley 46 is arranged for engagement with the belt. Y
The idler pulley 46 may be lubricated through a passageway 47 which is formed in the arm 43 and the shaft 45 and threaded at its outer end to receive a grease c up 48. Y
The grinding tool has a tool head 49, which is threaded at its upper end for attachment to the lower end of the outer shaft 6, and a bearing 50 which is pivoted on the tool head eccentricto the axis thereof and carries a grinding wheel 51.
The grinding wheel is driven from the inner shaft 7 by a gear train 52 and adjusted eccentrically to the tool head 49 by an adjusting mechanism 53, as more fully set forth inPatent No. 1,708,822 April 9, 1929.
The boring tool has a tool head 54 which is threaded at its upper end for attachment to the lower end of the outer shaft and carries a set of boring cutters 55 which abut the conical end of an adjusting screw 56 threaded in the tool head 54.
The adjusting screw 56 may be rotated in the tool head 54 by a wrench 57 toV adjust the cutters 55 and is provided with a central bore 58 to accommodate the end of the wrench 57 Whenthe cutters are being adjusted and to accommodate the lower end of the inner shaft 7 when the boring tool is attached to the outer shaft.
A limit switch 59 is attached to the upper frame 3 in selected positions and connected in circuit with the motor 9 to stop the same when the boring tool or the grinding tool has been advanced to a predetermined limit.
A switch actuator 60 is pivoted on the base of the switch and extends through the upper frame into the path of the feed nut 25 which engages it and opens the switch when the tool reaches the limit previously determined.
- The machine set forth herein maybe modified in various ways without departing from `the invention embodied therein and hereafter claimed.
The invention is claimed as follows: l. A boring and grinding machine comprising a portable frame having a horizontal base and a vertical standard, a rotatable and slidable outer shaftarranged in said standard, a drive to rotate said outer shaft, a shaft support tov carry -said outer shaft, means to move said shaft support vertically, an inner tool shaft carried in said outer shaft, a rotary driver arranged alongside said outer shaft, and a drive connecting said inner shaft and said driver and moved positively along said driver by said shaft support in unison with the vertical movement of said shafts.
2. A boring and grinding machine comprising aportable frame having a horizontal base and a vertical standard, a rotatable and slidable outer shaft arranged in said standard, a
shaft, and a drive Iconnecting said innerv shaft and said driver and moved positivelyV along said driver by said shaftl support in unison with the vertical movement of said shafts.
3. A boring and grinding machine com prising a portable frame having a horizontal base and a vertical standard, a rotatable and slidable outer shaft arranged in said standard, a -drive to rotate said outer shaft, an inner shaft arranged in said outer shaft to drive a tool and carried by said outer shaft, a feed screw arranged alongside said outer shaft, a shaft carrier supported by said feed screw'- and connectedy to said outer shaft to support' the same, meansto move said shaft carrier along said feed screw, a rotary driver arranged alongside saidY outer shaft, and a drive-connecting said `innershaft and said driver and positively moved by said shaft carrier along said driver;
4. A boring and grinding machine comprising a portable frame having a horizontal base and vertical standard, a rotatable and slidable outer shaft arranged in said standard, a-driveto rotate said outer shaft, an inner shaft arranged in said outer shaft to drive a tool and carried by said outer shaft, a Vfeed screwv arranged alongside said outer c shaft, a shaft carrier supported by said feed screw and having a thrust bearing connection with said outer shaft to support the same, means to move said shaft carrier along said feed-screw', a rotary driver arranged along; side said outer shaft, a drive connecting said inner shaft andV said driver and positively moved by said shaft carrier along said driver.
5. A boring and grinding machine-com prising a vertical outer shaft having independent rotary and aXial movements, a* feed screw arranged alongside'said shaft, a shaft carrier supported by said feed screw and connected to said shaft to support the same, an inner shaft arranged in said outer shaft to drive a tool and carried by said outer shaft, a rotary driver arranged alongside said outer shaft, a drive connecting said inner shaft and said driver and carried by said shaft carrier along saiddriver, and means to'move said shaft carrier along said feed screw.
G. A boring and grinding machine comprising a vertical outer shaft having independent rotary and axial movements, a feed screw arranged alongside said shaft, a shaft carriersupportedby said feed screw and having a thrust bearing, a flanged head carried by said outer shaft and engaging said bean ing to be supported and moved vertically thereby, an inner shaft arranged in said outer t shaft to drive a tool and carried by saidouter shaft', a rotary driver arranged alongside said outer shaft, a drive' connecting 'said Vinner shaft and saidr driver and carried by said shaft carrieralong said driver, and means to move said shaft' carrier along said feed screw. 7. A boringA and grinding machine co1nprisinga vertical outer shaft having independent f rotary and axial movements, an innerr shaft arranged in said outer shaft to drive ay tool and carried by said outer shaft, a rotarydriver arranged alongside said outer shaft, a drive connecting said inner shaft and said driver and movable with said innerv shaft along said driver, a feed screw arranged alongsidel said outer shaft, a shaft Carrier supported'by said feed screw to support said outer shaft and said inner shaft drive and hold the same in fixed relation to each other, and means to move said shaft carrier along said feed screw.-

A. boring and grinding machine comprisingiavert-ical outer shaftv having inde'- pendent rotary and axialv movements, an inner shaft arranged in saidouter shaft' to drive a tooland carried by said outer shaft, a rotary driver arranged a longside said outer shaft, a drive connecting said inner shaft andsaid driver and movable wit-lisaid inner-shaft along said driver, a' feed screw arranged alongside said outer shaft, a feed nut threaded on said feed screw, a shaft support carried by'said feed nut and connected to said outer shaft and said' inner shaft drive to support the same, and means to rotate said nut and more the same along vsaid feed screw.

Aboring and grinding machine ccomprising av vertical Vouter shaft having independentrotaryand axial movements, a feed screw arranged alongside Vsaid shaft, a shaft carriersupported by said feed screw and connected to said shaft to support the same, an inner shaft arranged in said outer shaft to drive atool and carried by said outer shaft, a driven pulley carried by said inner shaft, a driving shaft arranged alongside said outer shaft', a driving pulley splined on said driving shaft and fixed for vertical movement with said shaft carrier, a belt connecting said dri ving pulley and said driven pulley, a belt tightener arranged on said shaft carrier and engaging said belt to adjust the tension thereof, and means to move said shaft carrier along said feed sci'ew.
11. A shaft carrier for a boring and grinding machine comprising a shaft support having an annular thrust bearing to support a vertical shaft foil rotation therein and a second bearing to receive a rotary driver and means to support said cari'ier from a feed screw.
12. A shaft carrier for a boring and grinding machine comprising a shaft support having an annular thrust bearing to support a vertical shaft for rotation therein, aV bearing carried by said support to fix a rotatable part of the machine for vertical movement vwith said support, and meansrto support said carrier from a feed screw.
13. A shaft carrier for a boring and grinding machine comprising a shaft support having two separable parts and a thrust bearing at the junction of said parts to support a vertical shaft for rotation therein, means to fasten said parts together, and means to support said carrier from a feed screw.
14. A shaft carrier for a boring and grinding machine comprising a shaft support having two separablev parts and a thrust bearing at the junction of said parts to support a vertical shaft for rotation therein, means to fasten said parts together, a bearing carried by one of said parts to fix a rotatable part of the machine for vertical movement with said support, and means to support said carrier from a feed screw.
15. A shaft carrier for a boring and grinding machine comprising a shaft support hav- Ving two separable parts and a thrust bearing ried by one ofsaid parts, a feed nut arrangedy to rotate in said bearing and held against axial movement thereinrto support said carrier from a feed screw, and a bearing carried by the other of said parts to fix a rotatable part ofthe machine for vertical movement with said carrier.
16. A shaft carrier and belt tightener forV a boring and grindingl machine comprising a shaft support adapted to be supported from a feed screw and having a lthrust bearing to support a vertical shaft for rotation therein, a bearing carried by said lsupport to x a driving pulley for vertical vmovement with said support, and an idler pulley carried by said support and adapted to engage a belt.

A shaft carrier and belt tightener for a boring and grinding machine comprising a shaft support having a thrust bearing to support a vertical shaft for rotation therein, a bearing carried by said support, a feed nut arranged to rotate in said bearing and held againstraxial movement therein to support said carrier from a feed screw, a second bearing carried by said support to fiX a driving pulley forvertical movement with said carrier, and an idler pulley carried by said support and adapted to be secured in adjusted positions.`
18. A shaft carrier and belt tightener for a boring and grinding machine comprising a shaft support adapted to be supported from a feed screw and having a thrust bearing to support a vertical shaft for rotation therein, a bearing carried by sai'd support to fix a driving pulley for vertical movement with said support, a rod arranged in said support, a pulley shaft carried by said rod, an
idler pulley arranged on said shaft to engage a belt, and means to adjust said rod transversely of said support.
19. A boring and grinding machine comprising a portable frame having a horizontal base and a vertical standard, a rotatable and slidable outer shaft arranged in said standard and adapted to carry either a boring tool or a grinding tool at its lower end, said frame having an opening` near the bottom of Vsaid standard to permit said tools to be passed therethrough, a drive to rotate said outerv shaft, an inner shaft arranged in said outer shaft to drive atool and carried by said outer shaft, a rotary driver arranged alongside said outer shaft, a drive connecting said inner shaft and said driver, means to move said shafts vertically, and means to move said inner shaft drive positively along said driver in unison with the vertical movement of said inner shaft.
20. A boring and grinding machinecomprising a portable frame having a horizontal base and a vertical standard, a rotatable and slidable outer shaft arranged in said standard and adapted to carry either a boring tool or a grinding tool at its lower end, said frame having an opening near the bottom of said standard to permit said tools to be passed therethrough, a motor carried by said frame to rotate said outer shaft, an inner shaft arranged in said outer shaft to drive a tool and carried by said outer shaft, a rotary driver arranged alongside said outer shaft and driven by said motor, a drive connecting said inner shaft and said driver, means to move said shafts vertically, means to move said inner shaft drive positively along said driver in unison with the vertical movement of said inner shaft, and a limit switch arranged in adjusted positions to contr-ol said motor and stop the machine as said tool reaches a predetermined limit.
