UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
WILLIAM M. GBISGOM, OF READING, PA., ASSIGNOR T0 WILLIAM HARBSTEB, MATHAN HARBSTER, AND \VILLIAM M. GRISOOM, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPLE-PARERS.
Specification form ng part of Letters Patent No. 173,942, dated February 22, 1876; application filed May 31, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. GRISOOM, of Reading, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Apple-Baring Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to so construct apple-paring machines that they may occupy less space in transportation, and be of a more serviceable character. This object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference h'eing had to the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan view of an apple-paring machine made according to my invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical section.
A represents the table to which the machine is secured; B, the frame, carrying the usual wheel D, with its spring paringarm, the pronged spindle F, for re eiving the apple to be pared, and the usual driving-wheels and other appliances'common to ordinary appleparing machines. The frame B, however, instead of having the usual clamping-jaws formed on it, is secured by a screw or similar device to a supplementary frame, B, provided with clamping-jaws an, and thumb-screw b, for attachment to the table, the connection being made firm by flanges or other steadying devices, as shown in Fig.2. By this means when one of my improved machines has to be packed for transportation, the clamping-frame B can be detached from the frame E, and the parts be thus made to occupy less space than if the frame was all in one piece. Should either portion get out of order or be broken, the uninjured part can be readily attached to a new frame corresponding to the one detached.
The figures in the drawing represent my invention as applied to that class of appleparers in which the clamping-jaws are so arranged in respect to the operating parts that the parings will fall clear of the latter 5 but it Will be evident that the supplementary frame may be attached to the usual vertical or inclined machine in a similar manner.
I am aware that apple-paring machines have been heretofore made in two parts permanently attached together, and this I do not claim; but
I claim as my invention- The combination of the frameB, carrying the operating parts of an apple-paring machine, with a detachable clamping-frame, B, provided with a device for insuring the lateral steadiness of the two frames, all as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM M. GRISCOM.
