INDIVIDUAL COMBINATION SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER Filed May 18, 1928 I /a\ l y y I 1 1 INVENTOR a EKrafZ,
A TTORIFE 1'.
Patented Dec. 10, 1929 PATENT OFFICE GUSTAV F. KRAFT, O3 KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI INDIVIDUAL COMBINATION SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER Application filed May 18, 1928. Serial No. 278,790.
The present invention relates to condiment holders, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of the combined salt and pepper box type, having removable salt and pepper containers and a closure element adapted to form a closure for either of said containers.
One of the objects in view is to provide a combination device of this type in which a holder is provided havin housing portions for both the discharge en s of the containers,
and also the bottom ends thereof, and a detent element serving to removably engage the bottom of each of the containers or receptacles.
It is also sought to provide a combination device of this type having the housings for the upper and lower portions of the receptacles integrally connected, and provided with a novel type of closure element in connect-ion with the upper housing portion.
With these general objects in view, the invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating one form of construction adapted for the embodiment of the proposed improvements, after which the novel features therein Will be set forth and claimed.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation showing a salt and pepper container constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same;
Figures 3 and 4 are vertical sectional views, representing sections taken" on the lines III-III and IV-IV respectively of Figure 2 Figure 5 is a transverse section taken on the line V-V of Figure 1; and
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional detail view,
showing a portion of the bottom of the device, and illustrating the method of removing one of the condiment receptacles.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, this illustrates the improved device as comprising a holder construction including an upper housing portion 10 and a lower-liousing portion 12 integrally connected by a rib or web member 14, the lower housing portion 12 being provided with suitable openings 15 for the passage of the receptacles 16 (for the salt and pepper, respectively, or other condiments) mto proper position within the holder, and with the upper ends thereof positioned within the upper housing member 10 with the mouths 17 of the receptacles in communicatlon with the sets of openings or perforat1on s 18 in the top face of the housin 10. As illustrated in Figures 3, 5 and 6, the aces of the web or rib member 14 are preferably of the correct contour for fitting the sides of the receptacles 16. The receptacles are held in place within the holder device by means of a suitable detent element comprising a sliding spring member 20 held in place within a slot 21 in the lower end portion of the web or rib member 14, the middle portion of the spring 20 having a slight hump 22 for retaining the sprlng normally in the position illustrated in Figure 3, that is, with the ends of the spring in yielding retaining engagement with the bottom ends of the receptacles 16. As shown in Figure 6, the spring 20 may be shifted laterally in either direction out of engagement with one of the receptacles to permit the removal or replacement of the same, as required for replenishing the condiment supply.
As illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 4, the upper housing portion 10 is provided with a suitable closure member 28 pivotally secured in place by means of a screw 30 upon the middle portion of the top face of the housing 10, in order that the closure member 28 may be swung into closure relation with reference to either of the sets of openings 18, as represented in Figure 2. The top face of the housing 10 is preferably counter bored about the screw 30 for accommodating a small spring element 32 in engagement with the under face of the closure element 28, whereby the latter is frictionally retained in any of its various positions. At the opposite ends of the housing 10 a small stop lug or projection 33 is provided, for limiting the outward swinging movement of the closure member 28.
It will thus be apparent that I have provided a neat, practical, simple and inexpensive construction for carrying out all the desired objects of my invention, and while I have illustrated what I now regard as the preferred form of construction, I desire to reserve the right to make such changes or modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt is:
1. A combination salt and pepper container comprising a pair of receptacles, a holder comprising integrally connected upper and lower housing portions for embracing both the mouths of the receptacles and also the bottoms thereof, said lower housing portion having openings permitting the removal and replacement of the receptacles out of and into assembled relation, respectively, and a movable (letent element for retaining the receptacles within the holder.
2. A combination salt and pepper container comprising a pair of receptacles, a holder comprising integrally connected upper and lower housing portions for embracing both the mouths of the receptacles and also the bottoms thereof, said lower housing portion having openings permitting the removal and replacement of the receptacles out of and into assembled relation, respectively, and a sliding spring element operative to retain both receptacles within the holder and movable lengthwise out of retaining engagement with either of said receptacles.
3; A combination salt and pepper container comprising a pair of receptacles, a holder comprising integrally connected upper and lower housing portions for embracing both the mouths of said receptacles and also the bottoms thereof, the upper housing portion having a smooth top face provided with perforations in communication with each of the receptacles, said lower housing portion having openings permitting the removal and replacement of the receptacles out of and into assembled relation, respectively, and a closure member pivoted to said top face of the upper housing portion and movable into closure relation to each set of said perforations and having a counter bored spring element for frictionally maintaining said closure member in any given position.
In Witness whereof I hereunto atfix my signature.
GUSTAV F. KRAFT.
