WILLIAM S. IVICCLUNG, OF HEREFORD, TEXAS.
CONDIMENT-HOLDECR.
vSpecification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1916.
Application filed Apri14, 1914. Serial No. 829,534.
To all whom z't may concern Be it known that I, iVILLIAM S. MCCLUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hereford, in the county of Deaf Smith and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Condiment-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to condiment holders, and has for an object to provide a simple device that can be easily and cheaply manufactured and which is preferably adapted for use ona table to dispense. salt and pepper, the two mentioned condiments being contained in a single receptacle or vessel, whereby they can be independently sifted therefrom by the user.
The invention.contemplates, among other features, the provision of a condiment holder which consists of few parts that can be readily formed of stamped metal Iso that the condiment holder can be cheaply manufactured, although the same may also be made up in a highly finished product.
In the further disclosure of the inventionv reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in whichsimilar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in' which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the condiment holder.; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the condiment holder; and F ig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the condiment holder on a line perpendicular to the vertical section shown in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the views,
I provide a receptacle 10 in which is arranged a partition 11 forming a plurality of compartments 12, 13 in the receptacle 10, with one of the said compartments adapted to hold pepper and-the other salt.
A top 111 is provided for the receptacle 10 and consists, more particularly, of a disk 15 having two sets of perforations 16 and 1'? therein, with the perforations l-adapted to the perforations 17 adapted to communicate with the compartment 13. The disk 15 carries an annular flange 18 forming a part of the top and which is adapted to encircle lthe receptacle 10 when the' top is fitted thereon. Formed in the disk 15 is a diametrically eX- tending groove 19 and a flap 20 of a simi,- circular construction preferably has its straight edge bent to form a hinge 21,
secured to or formed with the annular flange 18 of the top 14, the said spring-like catches being diametrically opposed so vthat when the flap is in position to -cl'ose the perforations to the pepper compartment it can be engaged with one of the said catches, whereas when it is in position to 'close the perforations to the salt compartment the said flap can be engaged with the other spring-like catch.
In order to hold the top 14 against accidental removal from the receptacle 10 `the annular iiange 18V of the top has secured thereto or formed therewith a spring-like locking member 25 adapted to project into a notch 26 formed in the receptacle '10 so `that a portion of the said locking member engaging the part of the wall of the notch will hold the top against removal from the receptacle until thev locking member is first removed from the notch in the receptacle.
It will be noted that the opposed faces of the nap-20 are marked with the words Salt7 and Pepperand when the flap is in position to uncover the perforations to the salt compartment the word Salt will appear plainly onthe exposed face of the fiap,
Ywhereas when the flap is in position to uncover the perforations to the pepper compartment the word Pepper will appear plainly on the exposed face of the flap, it
being of course understood that when the perforations to the salt compartment are uncovered the perforations Ato the pepper compaitment will be covered by the flap and vice versa. It will be apparent that the device described is of .a simple construction, and consists of few parts which can be very cheaply7` manufactured.
In order to position the top properly upon the, receptacle 10 the upper edge of the partition 11 is provided with a groove 27 into which is" adapted to fit a rib 28 struck from the under side of the top 14 andwhich is formed when the groove 19 is struck into the upper face of the top. With this construction the top, when placed upon the receptacle, .Will be required to have the rib 28 extend into the groove 19, thus causing the perforatons for the receptacle compartments to properly register therewith.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A condiment holder consisting of a cylindrical container, a vertical partition eX- tending in a. median line in said container, a substantially U-shaped portion formed ltransversely at the upper edge of said partition and spaced below the outer edge of the container, a cap tting the upper edge of said container snugly, said cap being formed throughout its surface With aplurality of ports, said cap being formed at a median line with an outstruck double portion arranged at right angles thereto and extend-v ing transversely thereof, said double portion seating in said U-shaped portion, said cap being formed in a plane With said double portion with a recess, a sector-shaped lidA adapted to cover opposite parts of said cap,
