STOVEPIPE OR THE LIKE Filed March 8, 1929 gmnntoz 11 fl dler E. Haendeld dbtommq Patented Dec. 10, 1929 WALTER E. HUENEFELD, OF CINCIIiTNATI, OHIO STOVEPIPE OR THE LIKE Application filed March 8, 1929. Serial No. 845,360.
This invention relates to improvements in stove pipes or the like, and more especially to a novel joint for connecting the edges of a pipe section of the character employed with knock-down stove pipes.
The primary object of the invention is to furnish such pipe section with an automatic spring self-locking seam, designed to join the opposite edges of the pipe section in such manner that the seam does not have to be hammered down before the pipe section is put in use, although it may be hammered down if desired.
A further object is to provide a novel seam for a stove pipe section of this character, which permits the side edges of the pipe section to immediately interlock with one another when said edges are placed in abutting relation. 1
A still further object is to furnish a knockdown stove pipe section seam, which, while efi'ectively holding the side edges of the pipe section in position, nevertheless permits such edges to be detached from one another without distorting the pipe section.
Another object is to provide a novel seam which is closed entirely at the exterior, in
contradistinction to the known types of seams which have the rior.
With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the a pended claims.
Referring to the rawing.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a stove pipe section provided with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is an enlargedperspective view of a portion of one end of the pipe section.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are views similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating modifications.
In the drawing, 5 indicates a resilient sheet metal pipe section having its opposite side edge portions 6 and 7 joined to form a stove pipe section.
One of these edge portions is bent outwardly to provide a neck 8, that joins a hook opening on the exte-' end of the inner hook portion 9 to the main portion of the pipe section. The parts 8 and 9 provide a shallow internal cavity 10, and a deep internal cavity 11, and it will be noted that the parts 8, 9, 10 and 11 preferably. extend the full length of the pipe section.
The opposite edge portion 7 is bent to provide an outwardly extendinghook 12 which interlocks with the extremity 13 of the hook 9, and the extremity of the hook 12 is bent back upon itself to provide a substantially U-shaped nose 14, which fits into the cavity 11, and this nose has a curved or bent extension 15 which takesinto the shallow cavity 10.
F i 2 shows the parts interlocked, and it will e noted that a slight clearance is provided at the points 16 and 17, so that when the parts 6 and 7 are pulled away from each other, the nose 14 will move as far as it can into the cavity 11, and at such time, the end of the extension 15 may readily swing out of the cavity 10, using the edge of the extremity 13*as a fulcrum.
In this way, the edges may be readily detached from one another, providing, of course, that the same has not been hammered down.
In order to join the edge portions and make the seams, it is only necessary to insert the nose 14 into the cavity 11, and then permit these edge portions to spring outwardly, due to the resilency of the metal.
Instead of curving the extension 15, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said extension may be left flat, as illustrated at 18 in Fig. 3, but in either instance, the parts will function in a similar manner.
It is not absolutely necessary to bend the back to form the extension 15, for instead the hook 12 may be specially bent, as shown at 12 or 12 in Figs. 4 and 5 so as to provide extensions to enter the shallow groove 11" or 11?. In each form the part which enters the shallow groove may move out of the same when the edges are pulled toward one another and the extension is swung inwardly out of the shallow groove.
My improved joint may be used preferably without any distortion of the seam, as
manlifactured, as it is only necessary tointerlock the edge portions and let the resiliency of the metal lock the parts together for practical use. Furthermore,
as my lock is on the exterior of the pipe, no open space is left on the outside, which would render the blank dangerous to assemble, owing to the liability of the metal cutting thefingers while the edge portions are being joined together.
From the foregoing it is believed that the construction, operation and advantages 0 the invention may be readily understood, and I tending neck terminating in an external hook,
I, along one of its side edges,
said neck and hook providing opposed shallow and deep cavities, the other ed e portion having an internal hook to interloc with the first mentioned hook, and a nose to extend into said deep cavity, and an extension merging into said internal hook and normally projectin into said shallow cavity, the extremit 0 said extension being free to swing inwar ly out of the shallow cavity when said edge portions are swung relatively to one another, while using the extremity of the external hooks as a fulcrum.
2. A pipe section comprising a metallic sheet, one side edge portion of which is provided with an outwardly extending neck which merges into a hook, the neck and hook providing internal opposed shallow and deep cavities, the other side edge portion of the sheet having a hook-shaped portion designed to interlock with the first mentioned hook, and being bent back upon itself to provide a nose that extends into said deep cavity, and an extension merging into said nose and normally extending into the shallow cavity, said hooks being tightly interlocked, permitting the extension to move out of the shallow cavity when the edge portions are swung relatively to one another, while using the edge of the'first mentioned hook as a fulcrum.
3. A sheet metal stove pipe section having an outwardly extending neck terminating in an external hook, said neck and hook providing opposed shallow and deep cavities, the other edge portion having a hook to interlock with the first mentioned hook, and a nose to extend into said deep cavity, and an extension merging into said nose and normally projecting into said shallow cavity, the edge of said extension being free to swing inwardly out of the shallow cavity when said edge portions are swung relatively to one another, while usmg the extremity of the first mentioned hook as a fulcrum, said extension being arranged substantially at an angle to said nose.
4. A pipe section comprising a metallic sheet, one side edge portion of which is provided with an outwardly extending neck which merges into a hook, the neck and hook providing internal opposed shallow and deep cavities,- the other side edge portion of the sheet having a hook-shaped portion designed to interlock with the first mentioned hook, and
f being bent back upon itself to provide a nose that extends into said deep cavity, and an extension merging into said nose and normally extendin into the shallow cavity, said hooks when tig tly interlocked, permit-ting the extension to move out of the shallow cavity when the edge portions are swung relatively to one another, while using the edge of the first mentioned hook as a fulcrum, said extension being arranged substantially at an angle to the nose.
5. A sheet metal stove pipe section having along one of its side edges, an outwardly extending neck terminating in an external hook, said neck and hook providing opposed shallow and deep cavities, the other edge portion having a hook to-interlock with the first mentioned hook, and a nose to extend into said deep cavity, and an extension merging into said nose and normally projecting into said shallow cavity, the edge of said extension being free to swing inwardly out of the shallow cavity when said edge portions are swung relatively to one another, while using the extremity of the first mentioned hook as a fulcrum, all parts of the joint being. arranged exteriorly of the pipe section.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
