` I WINDOW CONSTRUCTION Filed May 28, 1927 2 sheetsneef 2 lill llatented Utet. 10, 1929 WNDOW CNSTRUCTION Application filed May 28,
This invention relates to a door or window construction wherein the door or window trames are slidable between horizontal rails and are adapted to close a large door or window opening', irrespective et where the opening may be in a building.
nEhe primary object olf my invention is to provide slidable door and window frames especially designed tor leaded lights which lend weight to such iframes, and the trames have been constructed so that the lights can be easily and quickly installed together with means :tor insuring easy adjustment of the door or window trames.
further object et my invention is to turnish door or window trames with meeting rails that insure a tight connection at the juncture of said frames when closed, and outer rails of the frames are provided with -weather strips to exclude the elements adj acent said rails.
rlhe above are a. itew ot the objects attained by the simple and durable construction to be hereinafterl specically described and then claimed, and reiterence will now be had to the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion ot a building provided with doors or windows in accordance with this invention;
llig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line II-llf oi Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line III-IH of Fig. 1, showing a weather strip;
4 is an enlarged vertical cross sectional view of a lintel provided with a top rail;
lFig. 5 is a similar view ot' a sill provided with a bottom rail, and
ltlig. 6 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of the meeting rails of the door or Window trames.
lin the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a building structure including a door or window lintel 2 and a sill 3. The lintel and sill are connected by Stiles il.
Extending longitudinally of the lintel 2 and the sill 3 are top and bottom guide rails 5 and 6 respectively. These rails are angular in cross section9 may be secured. in place by 1927. Serial No. 194,929.
screws or other fastening means 7, and are ot' greater length than the lintel or sill so that the ends thereoi'l may enter door or window wells 8 in the structure 1.
Slidable between the guide rails 5 and 6 are door or window trames preferably made of metal and identical in construction, therefore I deem it only necessary to consider one ot' the trames, which is composed of a top rail 9, a meetingl rail 10, an outer rail 11 and a sectional bottom rail 12. rlhe top rail 9 is substantially H-shaped in cross section so as to provide a channel 18 to receive the top guide rail 5 and a channel to receive a light 14. `The meeting),` rail 10 and the outer rail l1 are spot welded or otherwise connected to the top rail 9, and said meeting` and outer rails have the confronting edges thereot provided with channels to receive the side edges of the light 14.
The sectional bottom rail 12 is composed of two iiat bars maintained in spaced relation by rollers or wheels 16 rotatable on screws or transverse members 17 connecting the par allel bars, said bars forming a channel to receive the bottom guide rail 6 so that the rollers or wheels may travel on the guide rail. The bottom rail 12 also attords a channel for the lower edge oit the light 14; and the ends of the bottom rail may be connected to the lower ends of the meeting rail 10 and the outer rail 11 by any suitable fastening means, aS :at 18;
The light 14 may have a multiplicity oli leaded panes of glass and a light may be held in each frame by putty 19 or other fastening means. f
The meeting rails 10 are constructed to afford a tongue and groove connection 20 when the trames are in a closed position, and a conventional form of pivoted latch 21 and a keeper 22 may be employed for retaining the frames closed.
Attached to the stiles 4f, by screws 23 or other fastening means are vertically disposed hook shaped strip members 2li that are adapted to be engaged by somewhat similar shaped complemental strip members 25, carried by the outer rails 11 of the door or window trames. The strip members 24: and 25 are adapted to cooperate in forming a weather strip to exclude the elements from the interior of a compartment having the sliding door or window frames.
I attach considerable importance to the simplicity of construction and the fact that the doens; or' windows. cannot? become acciL dentally displacedlmxd may'` lieieasily" andj quickly shifted for a desired adjustment.n
One embodiment ofmy invention hasbeen illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such: variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1'-. In asliding door or window construe-- Y tion, topand bottom guide ra-ils'angular incross section, frames slidablebetween said rails, said 'frames' haw-ingV an H-shaped top- 'g rail, the outer channel of said top rail-f being adapted toreceivel tlhe` top guiderai-l and the inner channel adapted tfo receivey the upper edge of alight of glass,a sectionalbottoin rail consisting of two separate bars` between if which is received said bottom guide rai-l'l andthe lower' edge of said light, rollerssupported by said bars andi rollersengaging said` lower guide rail. A
y2. In a sliding door orf window construc- L.. tion, top and bottom'- guiderails angular inv cross section, frameshslidable' between sai-d guidey rails",` said` frames having a sectional bottom rail comprising two plates adaptedY to be bolted together andjrollers' supported between said plates and? thereby forming' two channels, the' lower channel being adapted to receivel the lower guide rail and the rollers to Contact therewith, a light of glass received atits lower edge in theoppos'ite channel, an H'- shaped top rail receiving' the upper edge ofV said light and the upper guide raili v 3. In a sliding door or window construction, top and bottomI rails angular in cross Y section', frames slid'able between said guide `fails, said frames having anV H'shaped top rail, the outer channeloft'said toy rail being adapteditoreceive'said top gui e rail and the inner channel adapted to receive the upper edge offI alight of glass, asectional bot- 5-e tom rail comprising two plates secured to'- get'her to form Ainner and outer channels, rollers supported between said plates,l theV upper channel' beingk adap'teiill tol receive the lower edge ofthelight of gas's andthe lower' 5e. channel-being adapted" to receive the'lowe'r yguide rail, s'aidfrolle'rs contacting with said' lower guide-rail:Y Y
In testimony whereof I aix: my signature.
