My invention may be -dtilized in connection with various plates such as initial plates for automobiles and other devices, belt buckles and other like devices where it is desired to 19 "mount legends upon a base member.

It is a purpose of this invention to provide a means for mounting legends of this charactor that will enable the ready assembly of any desired le 'end upon a base plate and the permanent aflixing of such legend to the plate by hand.

I have shown the invention applied to a name plate for belt buckles but it is obvious that the invention not limited to such application and may be varied considerably in details without departing from the scope of the invention. It to be understood therefore that I intend. to include all such modifications as fall within the scope of the claims.

Referring; now in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates a base plate which, in this instance, forms part of a belt buckle and s Elia is constructed of any suitable material for this purpose. The plate 5 is provided. on the face thereof with a pair of longitudinal slots 6 and 7 which extend substantially parallel to each other, leaving a web 8 of the material of the base plate therebetween. This web 8 as shown in Fig. l i. slotted from one end there of by means of the slots in a direction parallel to the slots 6 and 'Z to provide a pair of strips 9 and 10 which are then bent upwardly away from the base plate shown in 3. In order to attach these legend carrying members to thebase plate, it is only necessary to slide them over the projections S and 11 which are pressed upwardly away from the base plate at their free ends and move the members along the side edges ofthe web 8 to the opposite ends of the slots 6 and 7 which are preferably of just such thickness as to receive the downturned edge portions of the legend carrying members. After the desired legend carrying members have been placed in position, they are then pressed downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 2 so that the strips 9 and 10 are/flush with the base plate-at their free ends. The material of the base plate and the strips 9 and 10 is of such character that it may be bent inthis manner and will not returnto its former position.

This securely binds the legend plates in place since they cannot now be moved due to the fact that the free end portions ofthe memhere 9 and 10 fit down into the slots onopposite sides of the web 8. From the above description it is thought that the nature and advantages of the inven- 2. A device of the character described comprising a base plate having a pair of spaced elongated slots therein, strips cut from said plate along certain side edges of said slots having one end integral with said plate and adapted to be pressed upwardly away from said plate" at their free ends, and a legend bearing member having means thereon extending through said slots and engaging said side edges for securing said member to said base, said strips normally locking said member in position but permitting removal thereof when pressed upwardly at their free ends.

A device of the character described comprising a base plate having an elongated slot therein, a legend bearing member having a portion extending through said slot and transversely of said slot on the opposite side of said plate from said legend bearing member to hold said member on said plate, said plate having a strip thereon adjacent one end of said slot adapted to be bent upwardly from said plate to permit removal of said member.

A device of the character described comprising a base plate having spaced elongated slots therein, a legend bearing plate having opposite edges thereon bent to form grooves along said edges and means projecting from said base plate along certainside edges of said slots slidable in said grooves, said. means being movable into alignment with the surface of said base plate to lock said legend bearing plate in position.

A device of the character described comprising abase plate, a legend bearing plate having opposite edges thereon bent to form grooves along said edges, said base plate having strips struck-up therefrom and slidably fitting in said grooves, said strips being bendable into alignment with the body of said base to hold said legend bearing plate thereon, said base being formed with means to accommodate the bent edges of said plate when said strips are moved into alignment with the body of said base and thereby prevent said plate from sliding off said strips.
