PATENT OFFICE l RAYMOND E. DE WALT, F LEOLA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO DE WALT PRODUCTS COMPANY, 0F LEOLA, PENNSYLVANIA,
A COPARTNERSHIP CONSISTING CF ISAAC LICHTY BUTT AND CLARENCE PAUL GARDNER WOODWOBKING MACHINE Application filed May 10,
This invention relates to a woodworking machine of the type disclosed in my Patent No. 1,528,536 granted on March 3, 1925, in which a horizontal arm is adjustably carried on a post and a woodworking tool is mountsquare-headed bolt secured to the yoke and fitting in a square hole in the slide. The object of the present invention is to provide a more eliicient angular adjustment in which hlle parts are held in place by a cam locking While I have disclosed a commercial form of the invention for purposes of illustration7 it should be understood that the structure may be modiied in various ways without departure from the true spirit and scope of the 4 invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
In the drawings;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the vertical arm and slide block looking from left of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, the horizontal arm 10 is pivoted on the post 11 and can be locked in any desired angular position by the nut 12. The socket 13 fastened to table 14 slidably carries the post 11, rotation of the postbeing prevented by a set screw l5 fitting into a key-Way 16 formed in the post. Vertical adjustment of the post is effected by rotating screw 17 by means of handle 18.
' The horizontal arm 10 is provided with a track 19 in which slides the carriage 20. A projection 21 extends from the lower side of the carriage and is formed with a lateral supporting iange 22 perforated by holes v23 located 90o apart. The yoke 24, in which the woodworking tool is adjustably mounted, carries at its upper part a cup 25. A twopart cover-fiange 26 which is fastened to the cup by bolts 27, extends over the flange 22 and 1926. Serial No. 108,140'.
carries two pins 28 extending into opposite holes 23.
A bolt 29 extends through a vertical opening 30 in the carriage and is screw-threaded into the yoke 2 4, being anchored by a. lock screw 31. Near its upper end the bolt 29'is formed with a reduced zontal bore 33 extends t rough the' carriage from its front end to the opening 30 and a locking bolt 34 is rotatably mounted in the bore. A set-screw 35 extends into a key-Way 36 formed on the bolt. The inner end of the locking bolt carries a cam 37 fitting into the reduced portion 32 of the bolt 29, while its outer end is formed into a handle 38.
A set-screw 39 is mounted on the carriage and engages the track to hold the slide in any desired position along the track.`
In the yoke 34 is swingingly supported a motor 40 driving a wood working tool such as the saw 41.
With this construction the tool 41 cannot only be moved in and out on the arm but can be positioned longitudinally of the arm or transverse thereof. Moreover, the tool may 'be raised from the slot or curve cut by manipulation of the handle 38 Without turning the tool on the axis of the shaft 32, if desired.
It will be evident that the device herein disclosed provides a verypositive and eiicient means for holding the woodworkingtool in mounted in said carriage, a yoke fixed to the lower end of said shaft, a woodworking tool mounted in said yoke, a cam member having a shaft journaled in said carriage and movable therewith, said cam member being arranged to raise and lower said shaft and yoke, and coacting means on the carriage and yoke holding the first shaft from rotation.
upon the yoke being in lowered position, and freein from each other upon the yoke rbeing ra1sed, to permit rotation of said first shaft.
2. In a woodworking machine, a tool supporting arm, a carriage slidable along said arm, a vert-ical shaft slidably and rotatably mounted in said carriage, a yoke fixed to the lower end of said shaft, a woodworking tool mounted in said yoke, a cam member having a shaft journaled in said carriage and movable therewith, said cam member being arranged to raise and lower said shaft and yoke, pins supported from said yoke, and a flange fixed on said carriage having openings in which said pins engage upon the yoke being lowered. y l t 3. In a woodworking machine, a tool supporting arm, a carriage slidable along said arm, a vertical shaft slidably and rotatably mounted in said carriage, a yoke fixed to the lower end of said shaft, a woodworking tool mounted in said yoke, a cam member having a shaft journaled in said carriage and movable therewith, saidvcam member being ar-v ranged to raise and lower said shaft and yoke, a boss depending from said carriage in which the first shaft is journaled, a flange extending laterally from the lower end of said boss and provided with circularly spaced pin receiving openings, and pins supported from flange, an annular plate surrounding said boss and having its outer part projecting over the second flange and secured thereto, and pins projecting downwardly from said plate to enter the openings in the first flange upon the yoke being lowered. v
5. In a woodworking machine, a tool supporting arm, a yoke mounted on said arm, a woodworking tool mounted in said yoke, vertically engaging means carried by the yoke and arm to position said yoke about a vertical axis relative to said arm, and a cam member operative to raise the yoke to disconnect the engaging means to permit rotation of the yoke about said Vertical axis to a different position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signatureA RAYMOND E. DE WALT.
said yoke to engage and disengage said openings as the yoke is raised and lowered.
4. In a woodworking machine, a tool supporting arm, a carriage slidable along said.
arm, a vertical shaft slidably and rotatably mounted in said carriage, a yoke fixed to the lower end of said shaft, a woodworking tool mounted in said yoke, a cam member having a shaft journaled in said carriage and movable therewith, said cam member being arranged to raise and lower said shaft and yoke, a boss depending from said carriage in which the first shaft is journaled, a flange extending laterally from the lower end of said boss and provided with circularly spaced pin receiving openings, a flange extending upwardly from the yoke and fitting around the first
