CATHERINE M. @TTI-IAN, OF RSEBURG, OREGON I .IPPAQBATUS vF013' LHTING AN D MOVING IEZITYAIIIDS Application med June 9, 1928. Serial No. $84,166.
My device relates' to ,improvements in aparatus for lifting and movinginvalids.' and 1t consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide any apparatus for lifting1 and moving invalids whichis designed to ave a person-supporting frame normally placed upon a bed or an operating.v table. This frame has means whereby it may be suspended from a carrier, this carrier having means for raising or lowerin the frame, and also means formoving the rame to any place desired. f
The device is extremely simple in construction, and may be used for raismg any part of the body of the patient above the bed or the operating table when it is desired to work upon the patient or to fix things with respect zo t him- @ther objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in .the appended claim.
\ g5 My invention 1s illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming apart of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the carrier and the frame suspended therefrom;
Figure 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Figure 3; -Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 2; Figure 4 shows the fastening means employed for securing the canvas to the frame;
and
Figurel 5 is a perspective view of a portion f of the device.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a canvas `sheet 1 that is large enough to cover the bed or the operating table. The patient lies upon this sheet. l are provided adjacent to the marginal edges of the sheet and receive hooks or snaps 3. i
The snaps are carried by a steel frame4 which is rectangular in shape. The frame is large enough to be lowered over the body of the patient, and then the snaps carried by the frame may be secured to the canvas sheet secured to Eyelets 2 (see Figure 4) the ends of the frame 4, and'th'ese handlesl may be manually lifted for moving the patient from place to place, or they may be raised and supported byl a mechanism now to be described.
Each handle carries eyelets 7l 'at the two upper corners thereof. To these eyelets I secure steel cables 8 or other suitabley sup porting 3 shows idlers 9 carried b transverse bars 10 that in turn are slida ly. mounted in grooved rails 11. v l v The rails are cylindrical'and have slots cut in their upper edges and in their tops. These slots receive lugs 12 carried by the transverse' bars 10, and the lugs have enlarged heads which prevent vertical movement of the bars 'but permit sliding movement along the rails.
The rails permit the bars to be removed gntirely if desired.. v y
At the center of each bar 10 I mount a hand wheel 13 that has an internally threaded means.v Reference to'Figures 2 andy how the cables 8 are passed over' hub 14 adapted to receive a screw 15, the lat.
ter being rigidly secured to the transverse bar 10. The cables 8 are securedto the `hub 16 as shown in Figure 3. Guide'pulleys 17 Vare disposed adjacent tothe huband align the cables 8v with the idlers 9. A turning of the hand wheels 13 will raise the frame 4, which in turn will lift the patient.
The rails 11 form a part of a carrier indicated generally at 18. This carrier has legs 19 mounted upon casters 20, and one set of legs is disposed far enough from the other set to permit the carrier to straddle a bed or an operating table.
From the foregoing description.- of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.
The patient is assumed to be already lying upon the canvas sheet 1. The frame 4 is now secured to the sheet and then the frame is raised by means of the lhand wheels 13 'and is supported by the carrier 18. The carrier may now be moved to the new location, and then the frame 4 again lowered in order to dis ose the sheet 1 on the bed or the operating tab e, as the case may be. The snaps-3 are unfastened and the frame and the carrier may be moved away.
Sometimes it is necessary to raise only'a part of the patients body. In this instance, I provide a canvas strip 21 having eyelets 22 securable to the snaps 13. The snaps are 'placed at different positions along the frame 4, and therefore the strip can be secured at differentl places for raising any part of the lo patients body desired.
Although I have shown and described one f v embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of various changes, and I reserve the right to employ 15 such changes as may-come within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim: A device for moving invalidscom'prising' a carrier having longitudinally-extending 20 lrails, each being cyln 'cal in cross section and having a slot in its top extending throughout the entire length; frame-carrying bars extending at right angles to the rails an having lugs with en arged heads slidably re- 25 ceived in the rails vwhereby said bars can only slide longitudinaily in the rails; a patientsupporting frame; hand wheels carried by said bars; and cables'wound about said wheels and passed over said bars the ends of said a0 cables bein secured to -said frame.
