My invention relates to furnaces, and more particularly to blank heatingfurnaces An object of my invention 18 to provlde an improved furnace. Another Qb ect of my 1nvention is to provide a blank heating furnace having improved means for dischargmg the blanks of highest temperature. A further object of my invention is to provide a blank heating furnace having improved means for cooling the blank guides and for preheating the air supply to the burner. These and other objects and advantages of my invention Wlll hereinafter more fully appear.

In this illustrative form of my invention I have shown a blank heating furnace, generally designated 1, comprising a metal casing" or housing 2 of generally rectangular shape preferably disposed at an angle to the vertiso cal as illustrated and suitably mounted on supporting means, herein legs 3. The casing '2 is herein lined with fire bricks 4 and has a burner, generally designated 5, arranged/in the front wall of the casing member adapted to'admit a gaseous mixture into a combustion chamber 6, formed by the walls of the furnace, and which is provided'with a vent or iggflue 7 disposed at right angles to the combustion chamber for the escape of the prod- 4 nets of combustion. v
Suitably secured to the casing, herein by bolts 8, is an angularly disposed metal casting member 9 disposed parallel with the rear Wall of'thefurnace having a groove 10 formed therein,adapted to guide a series of contacting blanks 11, herein in the form of cutter bits, through the combustion chamber, and

to the burner 5 in such manner as to supply preheated air to the burner, thereby material- 1y improving combustion and effecting a saving in fuel. Oil'fuel, or gas of any description, is admitted to the burner 5 through a pipe connection 15 from any suitable source of supply. The flame from the burner is directed onto the blanks at the bottom of the magazine, thereby heating the blanks to the maximum temperature just before they are discharged from the furnace, and then passes upwardly in the flue 7 by means of a natural draft, giving the ends of the other blanks in the member 9 a preliminary heating so that by the time they arev in line with the burner discharge a relatively small amount of additional heat is required to desiredftemperature.
Referring more particularly to the blank discharge mechanism, it will be noted that I have provided a reciprocable plunger or ejector 16 adapted to engage the bottom one of the series of blanks as it passes through an opening 17 in the fire brick 4 and force it out through an opening 18 in the casing 2 of the bring them up to the furnace. This plunger is herein suitably secured to a hookportion 19 formed on a reciprocable rod 20 guided, as at 21, on the casing 2 and having a collar 22 suitably attached thereto at a point intermediate its ends. Pivoted, as at 23, on the rear supporting member 3 is a bell crank 24 having arms 25, 26, respectively, the former being pivotally connected to the collar 22 on the rod 20, herein by a toggle link 27, while the latter is adapted to be pressed downward by the foot of the operator under control of a spring 28 to reciprocatethe plunger 16 as desired. If desired, the

The stripper member 30 is herein also returned to its initial position by means of a spring 33 disposedbetween a projection 34 formed thereon and a portion 35 formed integral with the furnace casing 2.
The mode of'operationbf my improved device will be clearly apparent from the description given.- With a series of blanks in position in the guiding member and the furnace heated up to the desired temperature, the air under pressure circulated through the and supply preheated air to the burner 5 which will in turn heat the bottommost blanks to a maximum temperature and preheat the uppei blanks. Then by. pressing down on the lever 26 theplunger 16 is reciprocated, discharging the blanks at a desired speed, the member 30 functioning in each operation of the plunger to prevent the blanks from being carried rearwardly by the plunger 16 and from sticking in the guides. 1
While I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is 'shdwn for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. In .a blank heating furnace, a heating chamber, guides therein wherein a series of blanks are fed, said guides substantially enclosing parts of the body portions of the blanks to protect the same with only the portions to be worked projecting into said chamber, said guides having a hollow space substantially coextensive with said enclosed parts of the body portions through which fluid may be supplied to cool the same, and means to eject the blanks from said chamber;
2. In a blank heating furnace,- a heating chamber, guides therein wherein a series of alined superimposed blanks are fed by gravity, said guides providing a longitudmal recess substantially enclosing part of the body portions of the blanks with only the portions to be worked projecting into said chamber, said uides having a continuous hollow space su stantially 'coextensivelwith said enclosed parts of the body portion through which fluid may be supplied to cool said blanks, and means. to eject the blanks of highest temperature from said chamber. 3. In a blank heating furnace, aheating chamber havin a flue, guides carried in said flue and extending into said chamber wherein a series of alined superimposed blanks are carried, said guides being in continuous contact with the body portions of the blanks over a substantial area to protect the same with only the portions to be worked projectinginto said chamber, and means to eject said blanks from said chamber.
4., In a blank heating furnace, a combustion chamber, a burner to admit a gaseousmixture thereto, guides disposed in said chamber wherein blanks are fed downward by gravity, and means formed in said guides whereby the air supply to said burner is preheated while cooling said guides. g
5. In a blank heating furnace, a combustion chamber having a burner therein, air cooled guides formed therein wherein a series of blanks are fed, and means for supplying air from oneend of said guides to said burner.
6. In a blank heating furnace, a combustion chamber, a burner to admit a gaseous mixture thereto, upright blank guides in said chamber having'an' air chambertherein, means atthe a gaseous mixture thereto, a guide formed in saidv chamber: wherein a series of blanks are fed by gravity, an air chamber in said guide,
and means to admit the preheated air in said chamber to said burner to be used inthe combustion of said oil in sa1d furnace.

In a blank heating furnace, a heating chamber having an inclined elongated flue at one end thereof, an inclined guide arranged along said flue and extending into said chamher for feeding a stack of blanks thereto by gravity, a burnerdischarging into said chamber at the end thereof remote from-said flue, and a plunger reciprocating in a line perpendicular to said guide for successively engaging and ejecting the lowermost blanks in said stack individually from said chamber.

In a blank heating furnace,,a combustion chamber, .an inclined guide formed in said chamber at one end thereof for guiding their portions to be worked projecting from the guides, and a burner located at the opposite end of said chamber from said guide and discharging in a direction toward said guide whereby the maximum heat is concentrated in the locality of said guide.
21. In a blank heating furnace, a combustion chamber; provided with an elongated flue at the top and at one end thereof, an inclined guide 'invsaid chamber parallel with said fluefor guiding a series of blanks therethrough, and a burner located at the end of a series of blanks therethrough with only said chamber remote froms'aid flue and discharging ina direction toward said guide.

Inea blank heating furnace, a combustionchamber provided with an inclined surface and an elongated flue at one end thereof a burner discharging into said chamber at the end thereof remote from said flue, means for guiding a series of superimposed gravity fed blanks along said flue adjacent said surface and intQ said chamber, and a plunger for successively engaging and ejecting the lowermost blank individually from said chamber.

In a blank heating furnace, a combustion chamber, means for guiding a series of gravity 'fed blanks through said chamber, a plunger for successively engaging and ejecting the lowermost blank of said series individually from said chamber, and stripper means for preventing the blanks from moving rearwardly with said plunger.

In a blank heating furnace, an inclined combustion chamber provided with an elongated fiue at one end thereof and disposedperpendicular thereto, a burner at the opposite end of said chamber discharging toward said flue, means to guide a series of gravity fed blanks along said flue and-through said chamber, and means for ejecting the blanks from the lowermost portion of said combustion chamber.
