UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. STEVENS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO BILLINGS, ICOBURN & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN `EGG-CARRIERS.
:Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,825, dated February 22, 1876; application filed June 12, m75.
To all whom 'it 'may concern Be it known that I, JOHN L. STEVENS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Egg-Carriers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the said improvement, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure l is a top or plan view of a series of egg-separating compartments embodying my invention Fig. 2', an elevation of one side thereof; Fig. 3, a section in the plane of the line w x and Fig. 4, an elevation of a side at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts. The object of my invention is to improve the means heretofore employed for the purpose of preventing the accidental detach- 4ment of the strips from the series forming the egg-separating compartments shown and described in Letters Patent No. 62,378, for
. Improvements in Egg-Carriers, issued to myselfand George W. Stevens, jointly, the 26th day of February, i867.
In the drawing, A represents a long, narrow strip, made preferably of strawboard, .and
having the notches or cuts a a in one of its vlongitudinal edges', and the notches a. a in the other. This strip, when arranged vertically on one ofits longitudinal edges, exceeds a little in height the longer diameter of a hens egg, andthe distance between the notches is about equal to the shorter diameter. Any number of notches ca may be made, according t0 the number of compartments which may be used, but it will be observed that the notches a a are only two in number, and that they are arranged near the ends of the strip, and that all the notches or cuts extend about half-way across the strip. B is a strip in all respects like the. strip A, excepting that the tongues formed by the notches a a are cut away, as shown at e e. C is a strip also made preferably of straw-board, and having therein the notches e e' and the notch e. The notches c e are all in the same longitudinal edge, but the notch e is in the central part of the opposite edge, as shown. This strip is the snne in size as those already referred to, unless the series of compartments is intended to be longer in one direction than the other, in which case there will be a corresponding difference in the length of the strips. The distance between the notches in this strip is also equal to the vdistance between the notches in the others.
'Ihe compartments are constructed by iuterlacing a number of strips, A A and C C, each series transversely with relation to the other, all the notchesA a a in the series vA A being arranged in the same direction. make uniformity in the position' ofthe notches a. al, and determine the position of the notches in the remaining strips. The notches c e in the outer strips C C 'will lie in tlie opposite direction from the corresponding one in the i mer strips C C. The central notches in the strips C C will thus be in a position to receive the strip B, which, when inserted therein, will lock all the strips firmly together. The outer tongues on the strip B are cut off, as shown, to facilitate the operation of placing and removing the strip. These tongues, however, may be of the same length of the others, and bent for thel purpose referred to.
I am aware that compartments of this class have heretoforebeen locked in various ways, and I do nothere claim such, broadly; but
I claim as new-f- The combination of the strips A, B, and C,
having therein the notches or cuts a and a', and c and e, respectively, the said notches and strips being arranged substantially as specified, and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN L. STEVENS. Witnesses:
