Dec. 3, 1929. w. l. CUBBERLEY ENVELOPE FOR WAX PAPER Filed May 16. 192 2 Sheets-Sheet Patented Dec. 3, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WA'RNER'I. CUBBERLEY, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OI COLUMBIA, A$SIGNOR TO BENNINGTON WAX PAPER COMPANY, OF BENNINGTON', VERMONT ENVELOPE FOR: WAX PAPER Application filed May 19, 1927. Serial No. 191,722.
My present invention, in its broad aspect, hasreference to improvements in packages o'rl'enivelopes forwaX' paper, and the like, and morepa'rticularly it'is my purpose to provide an envelope 'or package from which sheets of wax paper, or the like, may be readily withdrawn one at a time without dist'urbing'the remaining sheets in the envelope or package;
I am aware that it has previously been proposed to cutv an opening or' the like in an envelope. or package for waX paper, and the like, from which a single sheet of such paper maybe withdrawn without disturbing the remaining sheets, but my present invention is designed'to utilizea conventional'envelopje or package device without any specially 'cutopenings or the like for'the purpose; To this end I providea pairof strips which are attached by glue, or the like, across the mouth of the envelope or package and adjacent. or slightly overlapping the usual V-shaped'opening therein, sothat one sheet of 'waX paper maybe withdrawn from the mouth of the envelope or package and through the V-shaped opening while the remainingesheets are held within the envelope or package by the strips; Furthermore, it is my purpose to providea construction wherein the opening through which the single sheets of wax paper is withdrawn can be closed by the ordinary end'folds or flaps of the package thereby dispensing with the necessity ofprovidinganvextra closing means for keeping the remaining sheetsin a clean, sanitary conditi-0n.- 7
Other and equally important objects and advantages will become apparent as the description of my invention proceeds, but while IFhaVe'in the present instance defined for the sake of illustration an articlev of a certain specific" form, it will be understood that I do not desire to limit myself except as may beindicated by the scope of the claims appended hereto and forming a part of this specification.
the drawings wherein is illustrated an embodiment of my invention Figure I'is aview'of my envelope or package opened to expose the mouth-thereof and the contents,
Figure 2 is a view of my package or envelope completely sealed up,
Figure 3 is a view of the blank from which my package-or envelope is formed,
Figure tis a view of the first folding operation upon the blank to form the envelope or package,
Figure 5 is a view of the second folding operation, and places the wrapper'in such condition that it is merely necessary to fold down the'end flaps to complete the packaging of the contents,-
Figure 6 is a perspeetive view of the mouth of my package or envelope showing a sheet of'wax paper, orthe like, being withdrawn therefrom.
In the several views of the drawings wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like or similar parts throughout the several views:-
The numeral (1 designates an eight-sided blank adapted to be folded along the dotted lines 22 to formilaps and The outside'edge of the flap (4) is preferably gummed as at The respective side edges (6) and (7) of the flaps are cut at different angles from the ends (8) of the blank, the angle of the sides (6) being preferably and the angles of the sides (7) preferably being about so that when the flaps '(3) and (41-) are folded down as shown in Figure 4 the V-shaped exposed portion at one end will be greater than that at the other. The gummed portion (5 holds the flaps together.
The contents, which in the present case is a padof waxed paper sheets is placed between dotted lines (9)see Figure 4and the ends folded upon each other on dotted lines (10) to form'end flaps (11) shown in Figure 5. To complete the envelope or pack age the end flaps (11) are folded down as shown in dotted lines in Figure 5 or as shown 7 5 in the completed assembly of Figure 2, whereupon a strip of gummed paper or fabric (14) is attached to'the ends to seal the package.
As shown in Figures 1, 5 and 6, a portion I of the contents of the package, i. e., the waxed sheets.
To this end I provide a pair of strips of paper or fabric (13) which are sealed over the mouth of the envelope or package adjacent or partially overlapping the V shaped opening (12). The strips are attached to the flaps (3) and (4) and the end flaps (11). Consequently the contents of the package cannot be removed as a whole, but since wax paper is inherently very soft and flexible, one sheet at a time can be pulled, as shown in Figure 6-from the mouth of the package through the V-shaped opening and between the strips (13). The remaining sheets will not thereby be disturbed. When the required number of sheets have been withdrawn one at a time the end flap is disposed in its original position to close the mouth of the package and the V-shaped opening (12) thereby to keep the contents clean and sanitary at all times. While I have described the opening (12) as being V-shaped it can obviously be any other shape desired, as square, semicircular or the like, so also can the proportions and structure of the flaps and other details of the package be modified at will without departing from the spirit of my invention which is essentially in the peculiar adaptation of the strips (13) with an opening in the mouth of the envelope, and in the unique arrangement whereby the opening so formed is closed by an end flap of the package or envelope. The scope of my invention is therefore to be determined by the claims.
I claim:
