The present invention relates to a hinge or butt having means for rictionally holding the door or other swinging member hung on the hinge in any desired position, and tor preventing the door from swinging too rapidly into closed or open posit-ion. My improved hinge may be employed wherever it is desirable to hold a swinging member trictionally in any desired position and where it is desirable to prevent slamining ot' the hinged member, and finds particular use for doors of hospitals, hotels and the like.
The aim of the invention is to provide an improved hinge of this sort which is very l5 simple in construction and reliable and et'- :tective in operation.
A further aim oit' the invention is to provide a friction butt wherein the weight ot' the swinging member is borne entirely by the butt, the irictional device bearing none of this weight.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a butt with a frictional device having relatively large trictional surfaces or areas so that wear ot the frictional members is reduced to a minimum, and the friction between these members can be adjusted with greatnicety.
A still further aim ot the invention is 3U to provide a trictional device, the parts ot which form an assembled unit, the frictional elements of which may be readily renewed when necessary, the rictional unit being easily assembled on and disassembled `from H the leaves ot' the butt.
@ther objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out more in detail hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the 'features ot construction, combination ot elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of. which will be indicated in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A and B respectively designate the leaves of the butt or hinge. The leaf A has between its ends a. pair ot' knuckles 10 and 11 between which is a space in which the friction unit, designated generally by the letter C, is positioned. The leaf B has a pair of end knuckles 12 and 13, the former oit which 1s positioned above the knuckle 10, and the latter of which is below the knuckle 11; that is to say, the knuckles 12 and 13 straddle the knuckles 10 and 11. It desired, there may be interposed between the knuckles of the two leaves ball bearing units 14. These units may be secured to the knuckles 12 and 13 by tubes or eyelets 15.
The letter D designates the pin or pintle 'for connecting the leaves together, and this pintle, as hereinafter described more in detail, is employed for adjusting the friction device. In the present illustrative disclosure, the pin is shown as having a portion 16 of larger diameter adapted to engage in the knuckles 12 and 1() and a portion of smaller diameter 17 adapted to engage in the friction device and the knuckles 11 and 13, there being a shoulder 18 between the portions 16 and 17 which is adapted to engage on the triction device. Adjustably connected, as by means oi a ,set screw 19 to the upper end of the pin, is a cap or tip 20 which gives a finished appearance to the hinge. The inner end of the screw 19 is adapted to engage in a vertical groove 21 in order to prevent rotation of the cap relative to the pin and to permit of longitudinal adjustment of the pin relative to the cap. The pin, adjacent its upper end, has a pair of lugs 22 adapted to engage in netches 225i iu the opening through the upper unit, means for holdingl said pin from rotatien relative to one of said leaves, said pin having' a shoul( er adapted to bear upon said unit, a nut for longitudinally adjusting said pin, and a spring against which said nut bears.
Ll. ln a hinge of the character described, a pair of leaves provided with aligned knuckles, a friction unit comprising a plurality of disks each having a pair of prongs with a notch therebetween, alternate disks having their notches receiving the edges of one leaf and intervening disks having their notches receiving the edge of the other leaf, means for securing the disks against ready detachment from one of said leaves, a pin extending` through said knuckles and disks and adapted to bear upon said unit, and means for adjusting said pin to vary the friction of said unit.
5. ln a hinge of the character described, a pair of leaves provided with aligned knuckles, a friction unit interposed between a pair of said knuckles and comprising a plurality of disks each having a pair of projections with a notch therebetween, the notches of alternate disks being arranged to receive the edge of one of said leaves and the notches of the intervening disks being arranged to receive the edge of the other leaf, one of said leaves having a groove or score and a prong of each disk associated with said leaf being depressed into said groove, a pin extending through said knuckles and unit and having a shoulder adapted to bear upon the unit, and means for adjusting the pin.

A hinge of the character described, a pair of leaves provided with aligned knuckles; a friction unit comprising superimposed friction disks alternately connected to the respective leaves and a sleeve extending through and holding said disks together; a pin extending through said knickles and unit and adapted to bear upon said unit, and means for adjusting said pin to vary the friction between said disks.
7. ln a hinge of the character described, a pair of leaves provided with aligned knuckles; a friction unit interposed between a pair of said knuckles and comprising superimposed disks alternately connected to said leaves and a sleeve extending through said disks, the opposite ends Iof said sleeve being flanged to hold the disks together; a pin extending through said knuckles and said sleeve and having a shoulder adapted to bear upon said sleeve, and means for adjusting said pin to vary the friction between said disks.
8. In a hinge of the character described, a leaf having a pair of knuckles with a space therebetween, a second leaf having a pair of knuckles straddling said first mentioned knuckles; a` friction unit positioned in the space between said first pair of knuckles and comprising superimposed disks alternately connected to said leaves, and a sleeve extending through and connecting said disks; a pin extending through said knuckles and sleeve and having a shoulder bearing upon said sleeve, and a nut for adjusting said pin, said pin having an oil groove and said sleeve being perforated.
9. In a hinge of the character described, a leaf having a pair of rigid knuckles with a space therebetween, a second leaf having a pair of knuckles straddling said iirst mcntioned knuckles, friction disks positioned in and substantially filling the space between said first pair of knuckles and each having a pair of prongs with a notch therebetween, alternate disks having their notches receiving the edge of one leaf and intervening disks having their notches receiving the edge of the other leaf, a pin slidably mounted in said knuckles and having a shoulder bearing against said disks, and means for adjusting said pin to vary the pressure of said shoulder on said disks.
