WILLIAM L. VALIQUETTE, or DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR T 'ri-rn nAnnrs-snYnonn- POTTER COMPANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION or DELAWARE.
GAUGE FOR PAPER-CUTTING MACHINES Application filed February 1927. Serial No. Zl65,7'34ld My invention relates to means for gauging the successive cuts in paper cutting machines,
whereby a quick and accurate adjustment of the paper pile may be made in order that successive cuts may be at accurate right angles to each other.
vide a movable and accurately adjustable tion therewith, to provide a fixed side gauge for the next successive cut.
at accurate right angles to each other, when the front out has been made and the paper it so happens that the rear uncut edge of the pile thus turned is not at right angles to the first cut, it is necessary to jog the pile accurately against the slde gauge. To accomplish this takes considerable time and trouto the knife cut.
ble where the side gauge is fixed, and in addition the adjustment may not be accurate.
It is to remedy this difficulty that my invention is directed, and it consists of that certain novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby the side gauge may be movable and readily and easily adjusted against the paper pile to obtain the desired accurate right angle cut for the successive operations on the paper.
I have illustrated only so much of the paper cutting machine as may be necessary to explain the construction and operation of the side gauge.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan of one corner of the cutting table showing the position of the gauges. l Figure 2 is a side elevation of same.
Fi ure3is a cross section on the line 3 3 v v a b nation wlth a cuttlng table, cutting. knife of Fig. 2.
The cutting table is indicated at 1 supportusual back gauge is indicated at 3, the front edge of which is set accurately parallel to the cutting knife indicated at 4. This back to gauge slides in the usual grooves in the table ters Patent is top, and is adjustablein the usual way by the indexed band wheel indicated at 5. y A
The side gauge is set .at accurate right angles to the knife and comprises a bar 6 which is mounted near. either end on studs 7,
8', 9 and 10. These studs slide in a plate 20, It has been customary in the past to pro and the studs for each pair are threaded right "and left and carry gears similarlythreade'd. back gauge for the paper pile, and in connec- The gears 15, 15 and 16, 16 are" held from "longitudinal lIlOVQHlGllt'OIl the Screw threaded against which the paper pile is to be adjusted While the back Y gauge and fixed side gauge have been disposed studs by hearing plates 11, 12 which are Socured by bolts 13 to'the plate 20; The gears are engaged-by a rack bar 17 which extends between each pair, the rackbar being provi'ded with a handle18 extending out in front pile is given a quarter turn for the second, 1f I in convenient reach of the operator. It will be obvious from thisconstruction thatthe rotation of the gears under the action of the "rack bar'will drive the-studs to slide in the plate 20 and adjust the side gauge Outand'in" while maintaining its right angled relation With this construction, all the operator has to do when he turns the paper pile for the second cut is to operate the rack bar and bring the side gaugeup to the cut edge of the pile and the second out will be at accurate right angles to the previous'cut. v *l/vhile I have shown one construction for adjusting theside gauge, which I prefer, I
do not wish to be limited in the claims that follow to the particular construction shown, as other mechanism for adj usting the'fside 'gaugewithoutchanging its right angled'relathan to the travel of-the cuttin knife, will fall u u u o t) withln the spirit of my invention.
I-I'aving thus described my invention what I claimas new and desire to secure by Let- 1'.
