citizen of the United States, residing at New in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a machine for cutting slits or slots in blanks of paper, card board, corrugated board and other sheets of material, and aims to provide a novel and improved machine of that character operable automatically.
The invention has for its Object the provision of novel cutters for cutting the slits or slots, and adjustable to out slits of different lengths and at different positions.
Another object is to provide an adjustable cutter in a machine of that character comprising cutter blades assembled in a novel manner to regulate the length of the slits cut by the blades.
A further object is the provision of a novel adjustable bed over which the sheets or blanks are cut and constructed in a novel manner to be adjusted to conform to the adjustment of the cutters for receiving them after they pierce the material.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the descri tion proceeds, the invention resides in tie construction and arrangement of parts here I inafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of the machine, portions being broken away and portions shown in section.

a magazine 2 for the blanks or sheets is provided on the table near the rear end thereof. This magazine includes a transverse front wall 3 on the table, the upright side members 4 adjustable transversely on the table, and the upright rear members 5 adjustable longitudinally on the table, said members 1 and 5 being adapted to be adusted for blanks or sheets of different sizes. The blanks or sheets 6 are placed in a stack 1n the magazine 2 on the table and are fed forwardly under the wall 3 longitudinally over the table for the slitting operation.
In order to feed the sheets 6 forwardly from under the stack in the magazine, a feeder slide 7 is mounted for longitudinal movement in a slot 8 in the table 1 under the magazine, and this slide has a longitudinal slot 9 in which is mounted for longitudinal adjustment the block 10 having a finger 11 to engage the rear ed e of the lowermost sheet and shove it forwardly when the slide 7 is moved in that direction. The block 10 can be adjusted to different longitudinal positions along the slide 7, and enables the finger 11 to be adjusted for sheets of difierent sizes so as to move the sheets to the desired position when fed forwardly.
The driving mechanism includes a transverse drive shaft 12 which, through the medium of an eccentric or the like, reciprocates a link or connecting rod 13 pivoted to a lever 14 which is connected by a link 15 with the slide reciprocating said slide forwardly and rearwardly in the slot 8.
The cutting mechanism is movable up and down along the posts 16 upstanding from the table 1 at the opposite sides thereof, and slotted for theengagement of the slides 11'' which are movable vertically. The two slides 17 carry a pair f transverse rods 18 which carry a plurality of cutters. Each of these cutters embodies a vertical longitudinal plate 19 suspended from the rods 18, and provided with clamps 20 embracing said rods, permitting the cutter to be slid transversely to the desired position, and clamped in place. Disposed at one side of the plate 19 is a cutter blade 21, the lower active portion of which is V-shaped with the edges 22 sharpened and diverging upwardly. The blade 21 is the main cutter blade and is disposed longitudinally of the machine, and when moved downwardly, its point will first penetrate the sheet and the slit will be in creased in length as the blade is moved downwardly farther. The blade 21 has a vertical slot 23 for the engagement of a screw or headed stud 24 carried by the plate 19 for guiding said blade for vertical movement, and guide bars 25 extend upwardly from the upper edge of the blade 21 and are slidable through a flange 26 extending from the plate 19. An adjusting screw 27 is threaded through the flange 26 and has its lower end swiveled as at 28 to the blade 21 for adjusting it upwardly and downwardly relatively to the plate 19. A pair of secondary cutter blades 29 are arranged to move along the inclined edges 22 of the blade 21, said blades 29 having oblique or inclined edges fitting the edges 22, and the lower edges of the blades 29 being sharpened and arranged substantially horizontal so as to form extensions of the cutting edges 22. The opposite ends of the blades 29 are vertical or perpendicular to the table 1 and define the ends of the slit. The blades 29 have the ears or portions 30 overlapping the blade 21 and provided with screws 31 working with slots 32 in the blade 21 parallel with the edges 22, whereby the vertical adjustment of the blade 21 will slide the blades 29 horizontally. The blades 29 also have tongues 34 working within a grooved guide 35 carried by the lower edge of the plate 19 and extending horizontally behind the blade 21, thereby guiding the blades 29 for horizontal adjustment. Consequently, when the blade 21 is adjusted upwardly by the screw 27, the'sc-rews or pins 31 in en gaging within the slots 32 will move, the blades 29 toward one another, and when the blade 21 is moved downwardly, this will separate the blades 29. In this manner, by adjusting the blade 21 upwardly and down wardly relatively to the plate 19, the three blades 21 and 29 can be adjusted to determine the length of the slit or slot within the limits of the machine. The cutter blades 29 are disposed in a longitudinal vertical plane in which the blade 21 is disposed, so as to make the slit continuous from one blade to the other.
The cutting mechanism is raised and low.- ered by means of links 36 connecting the slides 17 with arms 37 carried by a rock shaft 38 underneath the table 1, and an arm 39 is connected by a link 40 with operating means on the drive shaft 12. An adjustable connection is illustrated as disposed between the arm 39 and link 40, to regulate the movement of the cutters when lowered, and for this purpose, a nut 41 has a portion slidable on the link or rod 40 and pivoted to the arm 39, and the link or bar 40 carries a screw 42 engaging the nut 41, thereby permitting of relative adjustment. The link or bar 40 has a roller 43 engaging in a groove 44 in a cam wheel 45 mounted on the shaft 12, so
that the cutting mechanism remains in raised position while the slide 7 moves forwardly to feed a sheet under the cutters, and when the slide 7 moves rearwardly, the bar or link 40 is moved rearwardly and then returned to its forward position, so as to rock the shaft 38 and move the cutters downwardly and then again raise them to normal position.
The sheet feeder and cutters thus operate alternately, a sheet being first fed from under the magazine, and then during the re turn of the sheet feeder, the cutters are brought into operation and returned to idle position.
The table 1 has an opening 47 under the cutters over which the sheets 6 are moved forwardly, and in order to prevent the sheets from being slid forwardly beyond the position intended by the forward movement of the slide 7, slotted posts 49 extend upwardly from the table at the opposite sides, being carried by the forward ends of longitudinal guides or gages 48 adjustable transversely on the table 1 at the opposite sides of the opening 47, to guide the sheets longitudinally at the opposite edges thereof. Blocks 50 are slidable in the slots of the posts 49 and carry rollers 51 to bear on the edge portions of the sheets, thereby preventing the sheets from sliding forwardly unless moved by the slide 7, it being noted that the sheets are moved one ahead of the other end to end. Screws 52 carried by the posts 49 engage the blocks 50 to press the rollers 51 on the sheets with sufficient pressure.
Located within the opening 47 is an adjustable bed for the cutters. Thus, the table 1 is provided at the forward and rear ends of the opening 47 with transverse rabbets 53 forming seats for the ends of several longitudinal bars 54, one for each cutter. Bolts 55 are carried by the end portions of the bars 54 and extend downwardly through slots 56 in the seats 53, thereby permitting said bars to be adjusted transversely and clamped in the position to which they are set. Th bars can thus be adjusted to correspond with the positions of the cutters, and said bars have the longitudinal slots 57 into which the cutters are movable when. they penetrate the sheets 6 that rest on the bed bars 54. Blocks 58 are slidable in the slots 57 of the bars 54, and are adjusted by means of screws 59, or the like, thereby supporting the sheets at the points where the opposite ends of the cutter blades 29 pierce the sheets. In other words, the blocks 58 are adjusted to correspond with the blades 29. so that th length of the slot between the blocks 58 is just slightly greater than the length of the slits, the blades 29 passing downwardly into the slots 57 of the corresponding bar 54 adjacent to the blocks 58. This will avoid tearing the paper or material at the ends of the slit. The blocks 58 are readily adjusted by moving the cutters down into the slots 57 and then bringing the blocks 58 against the ends of the blades 29.
In operation, after the cutters are adjusted transversely on the rods 18 and for the lengths of the slits to be cut, and the blocks 58 adjusted accordingly, the machine when started will automatically feed the sheets from the magazine step by step forwardly under the cutters, and said cutters are reciprocated intermittently to cut the slits during the intervals between the forward movement of the blanks. The machine is particularly intended for slitting the ends of sheets or blanks of boxes, to form the bottom and cover flaps, and the adjacent ends of the sheets can be slit simultaneously by adjusting the sheet feeder so that when the blanks are fed forwardly, they are stopped with the meeting or adjacent edges of two blanks directly under the points of the cutter blades 21. Thus, when the cutters move downwardly, one edge 22 of each blade 21 will slit one blank from the corresponding end, while the other edge 22 will slit the other blank away from the end thereof, and the position of the blades 29 will determine the length of the slits of the two blanks or sheets. The two sheets or blanks are thus slit simultaneously starting from the meeting or abutting edges thereof, and the position of the slits is determined by the lateral adjustment of the plates 19, while the lengths of the slits is determined by the adjustment of the blades 21 and 29.
Another advantage of the construction resides in the fact that short slits can be cut in the sheets by using the cutter blades 21, and for this purpose the adjustment .l1--42 is useful' Thus, by adjusting the arm 39 and bar or link 40 relatively, this will regulate the position of the cutter blades 21 when moved to their lowermost position. Consequently, the cutters can be adjusted so that the points of the blades 21 will pass through the sheets the desired depth, and by regulating this downward movement of the points of the blades 21, short slits can be cut. Naturally, in using the blades 29, the shortest slits that can be cut will be determined by the lengths of the blades 29, but by using the blades 21 alone, slits of shorter lengths can be cut down to the smallest possible slit.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 1 and 5, there ar three slotted posts or guides 16 at each side, and each slide 17 has three lugs 17 working in the respective posts 16'. The rods 18 are carried by the slides 17 and the clamps 20 of the cutter plates 19 engage said rods. The secondary cutter blades 29 do not have portions engaging in slots in the main blade 21, as in the construction shown in Fig. 1, but have flanges or portions 30 overlapping the blade 21, and extensions 32' fitting the horizontal slotted guides 85' and said extensions have screws or bolts 81 working in the slots of the guides 35, so that the secondary blades can be clamped in any adjusted position. Thus, the secondary blades are separated when the main blade is adjusted vertically, and the secondary blades are then slid toward the main blade after it has been set, and the screws or bolts 51 in being tightened will hold the blades 29 in place. Although the secondary blades 29 are not adjusted automatically by the movement of the main blade, the several blades can be adjusted individually with the same result.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A slotting machine embodying a slotting cutter embodying a main blade with a diagonal slotting edge, and a secondary blade adjustable along said edge to determine the length of the slot.
2. A slotting machine having a slotting cutter embodying a main blade having V- shaped slotting edges, and secondary blades adjustable along said edges to determine the length and ends of the slot.
3. A slotting machine embodying a main cutter blade having an inclined slotting edge, a member carrying said blade and having means for the adjustment thereof, and a secondary blade movable along said edge of the main blade and having means for positioning it according to the position of the main blade.
4. A slotting machine embodying a supporting member, and main and secondary blades carried by said member for movement in directions at an angle with one another,
the main blade having an inclined slotting edge and the secondary blade being movable along said edge and having means for holding it in position relatively to the main blade as adjusted.
5. A slotting machine embodying a cutter supporting member, a main blade carried for sliding adjustment thereby in one direction and having an inclined slotting edge, means for adjusting said main blade, and a secondary blade carried for sliding movement in another direction by said member to fit said edge of the main blade, the secondary blade having means to retain it in position according to the position of the main blade.
6. A slotting machine embodying a main blade having V-shaped slotting edges, and secondary cutters adjustable along said edges to determine the length and ends of the slot.
7. A slotting machine embodying a sup porting member, an adjustable maln blade carried thereby having V-shaped slottin edges, and secondary cutters carried for ad justment by said member and movable toward and away from one another along the edges of the main blade.
8. A slotting machine embodying a supporting member, a main blade carried for sliding movement thereby in one direction and having V-shaped slotting edges, means for adjusting said blade, and secondary blades carried for sliding movement by said member toward and away from one another in a direction at an angle to the aforesaid direction and disposed at said edges of the main blade to form continuations thereof and define the length and ends of the slots, the secondary blades having means for positioning them with respect to the main blade.
9. A slotting machine embodying a table having an opening over which sheets are movable, a cutter adjustable in length and mounted for transverse adjustment over the table above said opening, a longitudinal bed bar supported by the table in said opening for transverse adjustment to a position underneath the cutter and having a slot to receive the cutter, and blocks adjustable in said slot according to the length of the slot out.
10. A slotting machine embodying a table, a cutter operable above the table, a bed bar carried by the table for transverse adjustment to a position under the cutter, and.
blocks adjustable along said bar according to the length of th cutter.
11. A slotting machine embodying a bed having means adjustable in one direction to arovide slots in desired positions, a cutter mechanism movable over said bed to pass through the slots of the bed, and means can ried by the bed adjustable in another direction to provide slots of a length according to the cutting mechanism.
