Description

E. T. JAMESON. MACHINE FOR SHAVYING S'TEREOTYPE AND ELECTROTYPE PLATES.
No.173,729.- P atented Febbzz, 18 76.
m nu:
iiqitnems I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD T. JAMESON, or rITTsB RG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SHAVING STEREOTYPE AND ELECTROTYPE PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters-Patent No. 173.729, dated February 22, 1876; application filed July 22, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. J AMESON, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Locking up Stereotype or Electrotype Plates in Shaving-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the machine embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is an end view; and Fig. 3 is a detail, in section.
This invention has for its object the provision of improved means for securing curved electrotype or stereotype plates to the planingbed.
The apparatus in which curved stereotypes are placed to be planed and rendered applicable to their blocks usually comprises a concave trough corresponding to the curvature of the plates, and provided with a stationary cleat or stop at one side near the edge, against which the plate, when inserted, is brought to bear. Upon the opposite side are arranged the clamping devices, by means of which the plate is clamped and tightly held. These commonly comprise a number of wedges and corresponding eccentrics, the former being laid upon the edge of the plate and tightened by the eccentrics.
Such contrivances are objectionable for several reasons, especially as being inconvenient to apply, liable to inaccuracy, and slow in adjustment.
My improvement is designed to obviate these disadvantages; and consists, accordingly, in the substitution for the wedges or keys of a single adjustable'cleat, so fitted to the eccentrics that upon turning the latter it may be readily brought against and released from the stereotype-plate.
My invention furthermore consists in the provision and novel construction of devices whereby, through the agency of a treadle and levers, the eccentrics may be all turned sim'u1- taneously, and the cleat subjected to uniform and accurate adjustment, and retained in close contact with the plate.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates the planing-bed, mounted upon suitable supports B B 0 represents the stationary cleat, and G the adjustable clamping-cleat, the latter formed with several beveled openings, d, in which are arranged co rrespondingly-beveled eccentrics e, fixed upon the inner ends of rods 6, passing through and journaled to the side of the bed A. Upon the outer ends of said rods are cranks f, hav
ing each a longitudinal slot, g. G is a hori-, zontal bar, having a shank, 9 which passes loosely through, and is supported by, an arm. 72., projecting from the bed A, and having also studs 9 projecting inwardly and respectively through the slots f, and at its end a stud, g projecting outwardly and through a slot, 12/, in the end of an elbow-lever, H, pivoted to the support B. g
A treadle, I, is hinged to the base 13, and connected by a rod, I, to said elbow-lever. K is a toothed-rack or catch, also pivoted to the base, and pressed toward the treadle by a suitable spring, k. L represents a coiled spring, fastened to and encircling the shank 9 between its end and the arm IL. I
The operation is as follows The adjustable cleat being raised, the curved plate is inserted in the cavity of the bed and pressed against the stationary cleat. The treadle is then depressed, and, through the medium of its connections withthe eccentrics, the latter are turned, bringing the clamping-cleat closely against the plate, in which position it is held by the treadle-catch, which acts automatically. Upon releasing thetreadle, the motion of the eccentrics is reversed by the power of the spring L.
This improvement, it may be observed, is applicable to planing-beds already in use, the old holes of the eccentric rods being well adapted for the reception of the new.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new- 1. The combination, in a stereotype or electrotype plate shaving machine, with the plate 0 having the sockets d d d, of the eccentrics ee 6, substantially as described.
2. The combinatiomwiththe clamping-cleat, have hereunto set my hand this 15th day-of of the eccentrics, treaille, 23nd. inlteflimediate July, 1875.: connection, substantia yas escri e c 3. The spring L,'in combination with the EDWARD JAMESO'N' rod G, cranks f, eccentrics e, and cleats G, Witnesses: substantially as described and shown. .THOS. J. MQTIGHE,
In testimony that I claim "theforegoing I FRANK A. POLLOGK.
