IMPROVEMENT IN SOLE-CHANNELING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,7 [5, dated February "22, 1876; application filed October 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN E. CHIGKERING, of the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Channeling the Soles of Boots and Shoes for Wire-Nails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a description thereof, reference being had, to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of the tool-holding arm of the machine embody- Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the tool-arm, and a section of the machine.
,My invention relates to a channeling-machine for cutting the channels in soles, and consists in a tool-arm, constructed of two pieces, the one capable of being held from all longitudinal movement from a pivot-hole, and the other capable of being moved in either direction to or from said pivoted piece, in combination with a swivel-bolt, whereby the channeling-tool can be variously adjusted to form the channel nearer to or farther from the edge of the sole, aswill hereinafter more fully appear. y
In the drawings, A A represent the toolholding arm, which is made in sections and connected together by the swivel-bolt B, one end of which, entering the setion A, is made with an annular groove,'b, and held in place by the pin 0, working in the said groove. The other end of said boltis provided with a screwthread, 1, working in a screw-threaded hole made in the section A The said swivel-bolt is provided with a hand-wheel, O, by which it may be operated, the object of my invention being to increase or shorten the length of the said arm from its pivot-hole c to the plow of the machine, which may be done by simply revolving the hand-wheel to turn the screw d out of the section A when the said section will be thrown forward from the pivot-hole c, by which the arm is secured to the frame of the machine. A reverse movement of the screw will cause it to enter the section A and draw it back, when the arm will be shortened.
By this improvement, the channeling-tool can be accurately adjusted with the feedwheel, and the knife and plow can be set to cut nearer to or farther from the edge of the sole, as may be desired.
Secured to the head A of the tool-arm are shown the knife D s s, gage-plate F g, plow G, and roller H, for cutting-and gaging the channel, turning the loosened leather back and pressing it down, thereby rendering the channel ready to receive the wire-nails.
The advantages of my improvement are these: That the tool-arm may be so lengthened or shortened from its pivot-hole to the channeling-tool as to admit the tool being variously adjusted, relatively with the feedwheel, in a longitudinal manner, as the nature of the work to be performed may require.
