Patented Nov. 26, 1929 UNITED STATES Parent entree KARL FASSNACHT, OF PROVIDENCE, RHQDE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO SPEIDEL CHAIN CO.,
A FIRM COMPOSED 0F FREDERIC SPEIDEI: AND
EUGEN SPEIDEL, BOTH OF IEFORZ- HEIM, GERMANY, DOING BUSINESS IN FROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND CHAIN Application filed October 18, 1927. Serial No. 226,908.
This invention relates to an improved construction of ornamental chain; and has for its object to provide a chain of this improved form of a plurality of sheet metal links, each link comprising a relatively broad faced body portion formed of halves connected by a bendable neck portion and folded at the neck to lie one upon the other,-the body halves being slotted longitudinally to permit threading of one of the halves therethrough in connecting the links together.
A further object of the invention is to form these halves concavo-convex in cross section so that when one is folded upon the other only their marginal edges meet thus imparting to the broad surface of the link a domedshape or oval appearance, which renders it handsome and attractive.
A still further object of the invention is the doming of the body portion of each link to a thickness substantially the outside diameter of the connecting eye member there by presenting a smooth broad bearing surface to the arm of the wearer to prevent abrasive action which might occur if the eye member were of a width greater than that of the body members of the links.
The invention further consists in the forming of a very narrow slot thru the body halves, the slot being of a width just sufiicient to permit passage of one of the body halves therethrough, the slot being enlarged at one end to receive the loop shaped neck portion and permit a free swinging movement of the neck therein.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top view showing a plurality of links of my improved chain connected together.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the links illus trated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows one of the link members with its halves extending and connected by the narrow neck portion.
Fig. 4 is a sectional edge view on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional edge view showing two of the links connected together.
Fig. 6 is a section on line 66 of Fig. 5 thru one of the links and illustrating the dome shape of the body halves meeting at their marginal edges.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view illustrating the edge of one of the halves as being passed thru the slot in the body halves of another link.
Fig. 8 is an edge view showing the broad surface of the domed halves as resting upon the arm of the wearer.
it is found in the practical construction and use of ornamental chains of this character which may be used as bracelets, neck chains "irdles or for other uses, preferably for personal wear, of advantage to provide the links with a broad or extended bearing surface which may be smooth to lie against the delicate skin of the wearer without abrading the same and so construct the links of such a chain that they are substantially the same in general dimensions and may be connected together by a simple threading and folding operation and with-out the use of solder and still obtain a chain which is very strong and flexible; and to accomplish this in a simple and attractive way, I have blanked each link from sheet stock having two body.
halves connected by a bendable neck portion, the bendable neck portion also serving as a connecting member for the different body links, each body member being slotted to permit the threading of the body half of the next adjacent link, the slot being preferably enlarged at one end to receive the connecting neck portion and permit its free movement therein; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of my invention and showing one construction of chain links by which these advantageous results may be accomplished With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the body halves of a link which are blanked from sheet stock and connected together by a bendable narrow neck portion 11. The outline of these body halves being preferably ornamental in shape and these 'hody halves are preferably struck into a slotted as at 12, the slots extending longitudinally thereoi and each of these slots. is of a *idth substantially the th'cknessot the stock of the next adjacent link plus the increased thickness due to the doming of the halves so as to just permit a halt to be passed thru this slot in the assembly 01" the parts.
One end of this slot 12 is preferably enarged at 13 to receive the connecting neck ortion 11 of the next link and permit it to lie crossways therein and swing laterall to render the chain flexible and its links to swing in any direction relative to the link to which it is attached. This neck portion is folded into eye-shape so that it will permit this free relative movement of the links and also to serve to bind'the free ends of the folded halves together against separation.
the doming of the body portion of these links, or forming it oval, the thickness of the body substantially equal to the outer diameter oiithe eye portion l l so that when flat the broad face oi the body portion will touch and form a broad faced support instead of resting upon the narrow edge of the eye or loop 1 which would be the case it the halves were not domed.
By forming my im aroved ornamental chain of links having bro-ad surfaces, the links may be shaped in any desired ornamental term and their broad surfaces are well adapted to receive ornamentation to render more attractive the appearance of the chain.
, The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire to he understood that I reserve the priv -eg'e o resorting); to all the mechanical changes to which the device is SUSCGI),
