AINA'IIHANIELY' B. MARSTON, OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE RAKE-HANDLES.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,656, dated February 15, 1876; application file December 23, 1875.
To allwhom it may concern Be it known that l, NATHANIEL .B. MARs-l TON, of Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New` Hampshire, have invented.
certain Improvements in the Mode of Attaching the Handle to the Head of the Drag-Rake so as to be adjustable, of which the following is a specification:
The following is a description of `my mode of attaching the handle to the head of the drag-rake, which rnode hasv been newly invented by me. Reference is made to the drawings accompanying this specification'.
The object of my invention is to so attach the handle tothe rake-head that, while the teeth remain parallel to the surface of the ground, it may be raisedV or depressed to snit the varying heights of the persons who may use it. l
This I accomplish by the fastenings represented in Figures 2 and 3. Fig. 2 represents a metal clasp which is' firmly riveted to thev ends of the handle F. v 4 A is a circular slot, Fig. 2, through which the bolt, Fig. 3, is passed, and then through the rake-head. The nut B,being turned down, hlds the ends of the handle firmly vto the head ofthe rake.- The h ead of the bolt has projections a a ontwo sides, so that when the Witnesses bolt-head is inserted in the slot of the clasp and turned, a hinged fastening is. secured. The slot A, being eut on an arc of a circle, and being longer than the diameter of the bolt, allows the handle to be set at any angle with the head which may be desirable.
, Fig..1 represents the handle attached tothe head in this mode. The dotted lines represent the position to which the handle may be brought by unscrewing the nut B, Fig". 3, and turning down the handle. When brought to the right position it may be secured by turning up the nut.
I claiinl 1. In a rake, the combination of the clasp E, having an arcshaped slot, A, with the screwthreaded bolt C, lthe head of said' bolt having projections a. a. on two sides, whereby a hinged fasteningis formed, substantially as shown and described.
2. In. comb'nation, the rake-handle F, the
.clasp E, having arc-shaped slot, the screwthreaded bolt C, and the rake-head D, substantially as shown and described.
NATHANIEL B. MARS'ION.
