'WITNESSES "s ATTORNEY UNITED STATES BENJAMIN M.
PATENT EEIoE.-
RIGHT T() ABRAHAM HAYS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNIVES FOR BOXING HUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,651, dated February 15, 1876; application filed December 4, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, BENJAMIN M. LEGG, of Bement, in the county of Platt and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Knife for Boxing Hubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the constrnctionand oper'ation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. i
Figures l and 2 of the drawings are representations of side views of my knife, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view thereof.
This invention has relation to means for cutting the box-holes of wheel-hubs true, and thereby preparing them to receive the boxes 5 and it consists in the novel form and construction of the hub-boring knife hereinafter set forth.
The bore of a hub is cut tapering and with the grain, and an expansion of the bore is usually formed at thev larger end to receive the shoulder of the box at the neck.
The tool which I have invented is designed to cut out such a bore with facility. It'consists of, a strongr shank or tang, and a long tapering conically concave blade, having a transverse bend or shoulder near its heel, an oblique curved point, and a cutting-edge extending along said point, and `following the edge of the blade around the bend to the heel.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the shank or tang. B represents the blade, having, as usually constructed, a strong back edge, a, extending in line for nearly in line withthe shank, and a cuttingedge, b, which extends from heel to point and toward the back, giving a general tapering form to the blade. Longitudinally the elements of the blade are straight, except at the bend or shoulder, and transversely they are circular, so that the general forin of the blade is conical.
C designates the transverse bend or shouL der. This extends entirely across the blade near the heel, obliquely' outward, and cony nects the main blade D with the expanded neck-blade D. At the point the cutting-edge b is curved more/abruptly toward the back a, as indicated at c, to form the entering portion of the tool.
This instrument is readily manufactured, and is designed to serve an efficient purpose in turning out theinterior box-chamber. The
'longitudinal cutting-edge works with facility,
splittingout the interior fibers, While the bendedge z forms the interior shoulder of theneck. This portion of the edge, although cutting more across the fiber of the wood, being near the-handle or power end of the instrument, is readily operated. Sometimes a socket may be preferred to a tang at the power end.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hub-boxing knife herein described, con sisting of a shank, a tapering conically con- BENJAMIN' M. LEGG.
