Description
G. GRAFF Nov. 19, 1929.
LAMP
Filed Jan. 51, 1927 (lacuna Patented Nov. 19, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE GRAFF, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE DURA COMPANY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO LAMP Application filed January 31, 1927.
The invention relates to lamps and more particularly to lamps designed for use within the interiors of closed motor vehicle bodies. One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved lamp designed to illuminate by indirect lighting. Another object is to provide a lamp having a body and a shield detachably secured to the body by means of which indirect lighting is provided for and the light bulb may be readily removed and replaced. A further object is to provide a body and a shield which may be formed of sheet metal and which when secured together will not rattle. With these as well as other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construc tion and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lamp embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the lamp body;
Figure 4 is a cross section on the line 4-4 of Figure 3 and showing the shield secured to the body.
The lamp illustrated is a corner lamp designed for use within the interiors of closed motor vehicle bodies and comprises the lamp body 1 and the shield 2 which is detachably secured to the body. This body is hollow or dish-shaped and its inner surface preferably forms the reflector for the light rays. The sides of the body have the openings 3 through which suitable securing means such as screws may be inserted to hold the body securely to the supporting member. The body is formed with the rim 4 surrounding the elliptical light opening 5 and also is formed with an opening in its upper end for insertion of the light bulb socket.
The shield covers the portion of the light opening 5 opposite the light bulb and its socket and is located within the inner edge of the rim 4:. To position the shield relative to the body so that this shield forms in effect a continuation of the rim, the sides of the body opposite the light bulb and its socket are depressed inwardly to form the periph- Serial No. 164,942.
orally extending shoulder 6 which is spaced from the rim. The shield is provided with the peripherally extending bead 7 engageable with this shoulder when the shield is in place. For detachably securing the shield to the body the inwardly depressed sides of the body below the shoulder 6 are punched inwardly to form the oppositely located projections 7. The shield is formed with the side flanges 8 which are adapted to extend into the body below the shoulder and are provided with the recesses 9 for engaging the projections 7. These side flanges are resilient so that the shield can be detached or replaced when desired, as for example when removing a light bulb and replacing another.
Both the body and shield are so constructed that they may be formed of sheet metal, thereby providing for the economical manufacture of a light weight lamp which illuminates by indirect lighting and in which the light bulb and its socket are ordinarily concealed.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A lamp for vehicle bodies having in combination a hollow body having a light opening, and a rim surrounding the light opening, and a shield detachably secured to said body and covering a portion of the light opening, said body having an inwardly depressed portion spaced from said rim and forming a shoulder for positioning the said shield relative to said body.
2. A. lamp for vehicle bodies having in combination a body having a light opening and a shield covering a portion of the light opening and provided with resilient securing portions extending within said body for detachably securing said shield to said body.
3. A lamp for vehicle bodies having in combination a sheet metal body having a light opening and a rim surrounding the light opening, a portion of said body being in- Wardly depressed to form a peripherally extending shoulder spaced from said rim, and a sheet metal shield covering a portion of the light opening and located within the inner edge of said rim, said shield having a bead engageable with the shoulder of said body and having resilient side flanges extending Within said body for detachably securing said shield to said body.
5 In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
GEORGE GRAF-F.
