IMPROVEMENT IN STEREOTVPE-PLA TE HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,648, dated February 15, 1876; application filed November 16, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANSEL N. KELLOGG, of Chicago, county of Cook and-State of Illi nois, have invented a certain Improvement in- Piinters" Forms, of which the following is a specification The object of my improvement in printers ,'forms is to enable portions of the matter to be rapidly changed without unlocking the form, and while it is on the press.

The form is made up and locked in the usual way, excepting that the particular part of the matter it is desirable to make removable is represented by a blank space, in which no type i are set, but which is filled by a low bed-plate and removed, and of a height which, added to the thickness of the bed-plate, will be just sufficient to bring the surface upon the proper level of the form. The removable blocks are of such a thickness and weight that they cannot be lifted out by the adhesion of the rollers in inking, and fit close enough sothat they cannot be removed except by a square upward lift; The rollers, therefore, would be unable to dislodge them, even if sufiicient adhesion existed, because the lift of the roller would come only upon one end at a time, the square upward lift of the adhesion of a roller being impossible' In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, Fig. l is a plan view of the form, showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a section of the same upon the line m0, and Fig. 3, a section upon the line 3 y.

In the said drawing, A represents the chase, in which the form is locked. B B is the per- 0 O is the removable matter. 0 is the abutment or bed plate, which is locked into the form between the column-rules D D and the head and foot slugs, if said matter extends the entire length of the column, or

between such portions of the permanent matter B as may exist in the column. This abutment-plate O shouldbe of sufficient thickness to sustain the pressure of the form and pre-v Vent the warping over of the column-rules, and should be of suitable horizontal dimension to properly bind with the form. The removable blocks (3 may be in any number desired. Each block should preferably be furnished with a couple of holes, 0 6, into which a pair of awls may be inserted to remove the block the holes, of course, are bored at such points in the block as not to interfere with the matter upon the face thereof.

I have tested this improvement thoroughly, and have found it admirable in its working .and simplicity. The whole or any portion of the removable matter may be changed very rapidly while the form is in the press and remains locked. 7

Having thus described my invention, What I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and claim as new, is- Y 1. The combination, in a printers form, of an abutment block or blocks 0, of sufficient depth to afford proper bearing at both ends and sides for the contiguous matter, and the loose removable block or blocks 0, supported upon the abutment-block andmade thick enough to be held in place by their own weight, substantially as specified.

In a printers form, the combination of the foundation or abutmentblock or blocks 0, made of sufficient horizontal dimensions to bind or lock'in the form, aflbrding bearings at both ends and sides, and the loose removable type block or blocks 0, supported by said abutment block or blocks, and made of such somewhat smaller dimensions as to be loose and removable from the form, wherein they are held by their own weight, substantially as specified.
