J (lggiiviey Patented Nov. 19, 1929 UNH'ED STATES MICHELE CANTELLA, ROSLINDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO PRINSE MACA- RONI MANUFACTURING COMPANY INC.,
TION OF MASSACHUSETTS OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORA- DRIER Application filed January 14, 1928. Serial No. 246,745.
My present invention relates to driers, and more particularly to an improved drier for use in connection with the manufacture of alimentary paste products such as noodles, macaroni, spaghetti and the like.
Formerly driers of this class have been built in such manner that the air admitted has passed directly through the drier in one direction with the result that unequal drying effects have been produced upon the products inserted for drying.
In developing the present invention, I have endeavored to retain, as far as possible, the shape of the present driers, to the end that too radical a change of the shape and construction of the prevailing types will not be necessary, and also that the new drier will occupy the same floor space as the present types.
The principal object of my invention there- "fore, is an improved drier tor alimentary paste products and the like.
Another object is a drier in which the air current will come in contact with all the material to be dried in an even and uniform manner.
Other objects and novel features of the construction and arrangement of parts constituting my invention will appear as the description of the invention progresses.
n1 the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred form of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a partial side elevation showing two units in tandem, one of which is broken away to illustrate the manner in which the air is drawn through the drier.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the drawers used in the drier as shown at Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates a normally air tight cabinet which may be of any desired length depending upon conditions where installed. Subdivisions of the main cabinet are made by providing air tight walls 11 at intervals consistent with mechanical requirements. Each of these subdivisions are independent from each other with but one exception, this exception being the main drive shaft which passes through each compartment and which is provided that the inner or outer sides are open to admit the circulation of air. The arrangement 1s so made that these openings are in alternate relatlon to each other as will be noted by an inspection of the drawing. At the top of partition 14: will be noted a battle plate extending over a portion of the top to insure air being propelled in the proper direction.
Air is admitted at a suitable opening 17 and is drawn in an alternating manner, right and left, up through the drier by means of the fan 13, thence across the top cavity 18 and then driven downward through the other side of the unit and out through the outlet 19. By reversing the main drive shaft 12, the reverse action of the air is obtained.
A frame work of wire or other open construction is indicated at 22 which provides a series of shelves on which perforated constructed drawers are slid in with material to be dried spread upon them. These drawers 25 are provided with a solid front portion as indicated at 26 which serves to form a seal on the outer casing 10.
The bottom, sides, and rear end of the drawers 25 are composed of a fine copper wire mesh screen 27, the screen 27 being supported on a heavy wire frame 28 which is attached to the back side of the front portion 26. The wire mesh construction of these drawers together with their position in the drier with respect to the angular position of the separator partitions 15 makes it possible to expose all sides of the drawers, with the possible exception of the extreme front, to the circulating air, and at the same time, retard the air sufficiently to prevent too speedy evaporation or the moisture in the alimentary products. j r
This unit is typical of all other units composing the complete cabinet and therefore it is not necessary to further describe other compartments of the cabinet.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is,-
1. In a drier, comprising in combination, an outer casing, a series of perforated shelves, said shelves adapted to receive a series of drawers of porous construction on all sides except their fronts, a subdividing wall separating said perforated shelves, a series of angularly disposed partitions between said subdividing wall and said outer casing, said partitions attached to said subdividing wall and outer casing in an alternate progressive sequence, a main drive shaft located at the top of said drier and within said drier, said drive shaft provided with an air propelling means, means provided to admit air at the bottom on one side of said subdividing wall and exhaust said air at bottom of other side of said subdividing wall.
2. In a drier, comprising in combination, an outer casing, a drive shaft journalled in and near the top of said outer casing and further provided with an air propelling means, said outer casing internally support ing a series of horizontally disposed and openly constructed shelves, said shelves adapted to receive a series of drawers of perforated construction on all sides except their fronts, a series of horizontal bailie plates adapted to pass air alternately right and left in a diagonal direction through said drawers.
3. In a drier, the combination of an outer casing, a drive shaft journalled in and near the top of said outer casing and further provided with an air propelling means, a centrally located partition separating said drier into two vertical sections, a common baffle plate attached to the top of said centrally located partition extending from the said partition to a point adjacent either side of said outer casing, the center point of said baffle plate attached to the said central partition lower than the outer edges adjacent the said outer casing, a series of lower baffle plates in each vertical section parallely disposed to the corresponding half of the said first baffle plate above said lower baffle plates, said lower baffle plates alternately attached to the central partition and outer casing, alternate openings adjacent the central partition and outer casing being thereby provided for the purpose of creating an alternately and diagonally disposed passage for air circulated through said drier by means of said air propelli'ng means, a series of horizontally disposed and openly constructed shelves supported at either end by the central partition and outer casing and adapted to receive a series of drawers, said drawers mainly constructed of a perforated material having solid front portions adapted to seal the front of said drier when in place, a lower port located below the lowermost bafiie plate in either vertical section and adapted to admit or expel air when said air propelling means is in motion, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof, I hereby subscribe my name this 10th day of January, 1928.
MICHELE CANTELLA.
