Description

Nov, 19, 1929, B. FORD 1,736,115
STORAGE BATTERY COVER Filed June 50, 1925 awn r0? I W/f/VESS. Brae; 5rd
Mask/W rman 5K Patented Nov. 19, r 1929 STORAGE-BATTERY covng' Application filed June 30, 1925. Serial No. 40,492.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive stopper structure for storage battery covers which is adapted to vent the storage battery and to oppose or prevent the escape of spray. 7
To these and other ends hereinafter stated, the invention includes a stopper comprising two heads of which one is a closure and baf- 10 fie head and of which the other is a bafiie head,
and a stem holding said heads .in spaced relation to provide an expansion chamber space between them, the closure and battle head provided with a vent opening from said chamber past the closure, and theother of said heads providing an inlet to the expansion chamber restricted in area in'respect to the area of the expansion chamber space.
The invention further comprises the improvenients to be presently described and finally claimed.
In the following description reference will be madeto the accompanying drawing form'- ing part hereof and in which Figure 1 is an elevational view of a stop per embodying features of the invention indicating also in cross sectiona part of a storage battery cover.
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the stopper shown in Fig. 1, and
Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar to Figs. 1
and 2 illustrating a modification.
In the drawing, Figs. 1 and 2, the head, generally indicated at 1, includes a closure portion 2, and a baffle portion 3, and a threaded portion at. The head 5 is a baffle headand is of less effective area than the baflie head 3. 6 is a stem holding said heads in spaced relation to provide between them an expansion cham- 40 her space 7, and it may be remarked that this chamber is enclosed, when the stopper is in use, by the internal wall of the neck A of the cover B. The closure and'bafile head 1 is provided with a Vent opening 8 from said chamber 7 past the closure 2 to the atmosphere. This vent opening is shown as a notch extending into the rim part of the closure 2 and into the threaded part 4, and it is not straight but crooked or angular. The head 5 provides an inlet 9 at its rim to the expan- BRUCE roan, OF PHILADEICi fiIA; rnmvsxivhivie i sion chamber 7 from the interior of the ar, A
liquid particles deposit from suspension in the gas and find their way back through the inlet opening 9. The gas devoid of spray or liquid particles escapes through the outlet 8 to the atmosphere, and the baffle portion?) of the head lassists or plays a part in causing deposition of sprayor minute particles of liquid from the gas as it escapes through the vent opening 8,. A v e The construction and mode of operation of the modification shown, in Figs. 3 and 4 are as above described except that the stem 6? is shown as circular in cross-section instead of generally oblong and the bafflehead 5 more nearly approximates in size to the interior size of the part A of the cover, the periphery of the part 5* being notched to provide an inlet 9 diametrically opposed to the vent 8.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modificaand arrangement and matters of mere form without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited to those matters or otherwise than the prior art and the appended claims may requlre.
I claim l. A stopper for storage battery covers comprising two heads of which one is a closure and baffle head and of which the other is a baflie head, and is of lesseffective area than the closure and battle head, and a stem holding said heads in spaced relation to provide an expansion chamber space between them, cthe closure and battle head provided with a vent opening from said chamber. space pastethe closure and theother of said heads providing an annular inlet to the expansion chamber space restricted in area in respect 'to the area of the expansion chamber space.
l tions may be made in details of construction 2 i it 1,736,115
' 2. A stopper for storage battery covers comprisingtwo heads of which one is a closure and bafiie head and of which the other is a baflie head and is of less effective area than the closure and bafile head, and a stem hold ing said heads in spaced relation to provide anexpansion chamber space between them and amannular entrance to that space,,the closure and baflie head being provided w ith a peripheral notch constituting a crooked BRUCE 3.0 1 r vent opening.
