P OFFICE" HARRY ABRAHAM STEBN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
.ASH TRAY Application filed January 13, 1928. Serial No. 24e,463.
This invention relates to ash trays and the like having for its object to provide means within the body of the-said tray to flicker or scrape the ashes from the end ofa cigar or cigarette. I
' One of the objects of my invention is to provide an ash tray having an upstanding j blade either permanently attached thereto or separable therefrom. and adapted'to be used o to flicker or scra e the ashes from a cigar,
v cigarette or pipe owl.
A further object of my invention is to provide an ash trayequipped with a blunt edge, knife like blade extending som ewhat above 1`5 the top of the tray, and either permanently attach to the bottom or separable therefrom i and employed to flicker or scrape the'ashes from a cigar, cigarett e or pipe bowl. To enable others skilled in the art to more fully eomprehend the underlying features of myinvention, reference is had to the accompanyin drawing forming a part of this specification in which Fig. 1 is a'perspective View illustrating a preferred form of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail view showing one means of attaching the blade to the bottom of the Fig. is a p'rspective view of a modified form of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings, 5 designates the body of an annular,'sha1low tray having a top 'rim 6 formed therewith, prefer- -ably of metal, and to which is attached a cigar or cigarette rest 7, extending over the edge of said rim. While I have shown ,and re ferred to 'an annular' tray, it will be understood that an elliptical, square or other shape tray may be emp oyed. i
`In the form of the invention illustrated by Fig. 1, there is provided a flat blade 8 positioned substantially centrally of the bottom 9 of thetray, 'said blade 8 being soldered or 'otherwise 'permanently 'attached as at 10 to the bottom. Wherever I use the term blade or blade-like`I wish it-to be understood that the same is intended to cover as well a struc tum -'made of wire, the periphery of which will 'b'e substantially the periphery of the blade-like. portion herein described. The
` blunt edges 11, 12 of the blade tapertoward I "consists in providing two tongues 14, 15 on opposite sides of the straightbottom, saidtongues being adapted to be passed through suitable apertures in the-bottom of the tray and flattened or clinched. e In the modified formof the invention shown by Fig. 3, the shallow tray 5** is provided with a removableinner receptacle 16 preferably of glass whereby it may be easily cleaned. The receptacle 16. is equipped with opposed grooves 17 for receiving the ends of' aninverted T-shaped flat bar 18 which may be inserted and removed when it is desired to clean the inner receptacler The bar 18 is formed with an upstanding blade 19 similar in Construction to the'blade 8, illustrated in Fig. 1, and is of course employed for the same purposes. This form of the invention is easily assembled, requires no 'soldering and may be kept clean with very little difficulty. Other means 'may be resorted to for attaching the r inverted T-sha'ped blade either to the inner receptacle or to the outer tray. While I have shown and described my inventionwith some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations theren maybe made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changin the form of the details of Construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlatedfparts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subject matter being' claimed; u x
Having shown and described my invention, what I claim as new and desire' to secure by- Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described comprising a shallow tray, a removable receptacle for said tray, said receptacle having opposed ing a shallow tray, a removable receptacle for said tray, said receptacle having opposed grooves, a T-shaped fiat plate having the ends of the cross piece seated in said grooves, and the upright stern forming a single flat blade integral with the the top of the tray. 3. A device of the class described comprising a shallow tray, a removable rece ptacle for said tray; said receptacle having opposed grooves, an inverted T-shaped, flat plate having its ends seated in said grooves, said vertical portion of said plate being in the form of a knife blade, the edges of said blade being blunt' and constituting means for flickerng or scraping the ashes from a eigar, oigarette or pipe.
In"testimony whereof he has afiixed his signature.
