Serial No. 288,004.
This invention relates to a new and useful central opening 14, and a top opening 15, device in the nature of a marine turbine oonsuch as is the usual construction of a; water trol device especially adapted for use in power turbine of the centrifugal type. The inlet driven vessels, steamships and the like for the element 16 is of'tubular construction and is r 5 purpose ,of providing auxiliary 7 power for intercommunicative with the opening15. An 55 steering. v outlet element 17 is of tubular construction The object of the invention is to provide and is intercommunicative with the openturbines operated by the water through which. ing 14. V the vessel is being propelled as a means of The turbine 11 is provided with a flanged lo providing power for steering. element 1 8or support as a means of attaching 6O The device proposes to use water turbines theturbine to the keel 19 of the vessel 10, or connected for operation by water entering to any suitable portion thereof, in proximity openings in the front of the ship due to the to the lowermost, inner portion'oflthe hull of forward motion of the ship, and discharging the said vessel. The inlet element 16 isprothe water from the rear of the ship. The vided with a flanged extremity 20 as a means turbines are connected with propellers arof attaching the said inlet element to a similar ranged at the rear of the ship, preferably on flanged element 21 or extremity of the inlet opposite'sides of the shipspropeller. member 22,01? tubular construction which is i A further object of theinvention is to prosuitably extended therefrom slightly below 20 vide a device of the class described of novel the water line 23 0f the said vessel,-openings construction and arrangement of parts here- 24 being formed or cut in the side of the said inafter more fully described, claimed and vessel 10 to accommodate the extended exillustrated in the following description, tremity of thesaid inlet members. appended claims and in the accompanying Theoutlet element 17 of the turbine is pro- 25. drawing. type. A shaft 12 is rotativelymounted in the is secured to the lower extremity ofthe shaft housing of each of the turbines 11. A rotor 29 and meshes with a bevel gear 33 secured 13 consisting of a plurality of radial blades to a shaft 34 rotatively mounted ina bracketv is secured at its center or hub to the shaft 35 secured to any convenient suitable portion Q 12. The housing is provided with a bottom of the vessel. 10 rack gear 36 issecured use I to the extended extremity of the shaft 34 and V meshes with racks 37 and 38 positioned respectively above and below the rack gear 36. The racks 37 and 38 are provided respectively with extended elements 39 and 40, slidably mounted in thebrackets 41 and 42 secured to any suitable convenient portion of the vessel 10. Levers 43 and 44 are secured respectively to the extended elements 39 and 40 of the racks 37 and 38, and are extended therefrom. and are provided with fork shaped extremities 45 and 46, respectively adapted to engage the bevel gears 47 and 48, respectively. The bevel gears 47 and 48 are slidably' mounted on the shafts 49,'which are provided with intermediate elements 50 and 51, of square transverse section, adapted to slidably accommodatesimilar shape central openings formed in the bevel gears 47 and 48. The shafts 49 are rotatively mounted in brackets 52 and 53 secured to any suitable convenient portion of the hull of the vessel 10.
Bevel pinions 54 and 55 are secured to shafts 56' and 57 rotatively mounted in brackets 58'and- 59, and in suitable out board stufling boxes 60 and 61 positioned at the rear of the hull of the vessel 10, at either sides of the above'mentionedpropeller 11; The shafts 56 and 57 are extended through the stuffing boxes-60 and 61, and have secured thereto at their extended extremities 63, respectively.
The shafts 49 are provided with bevel gears 64 meshing with gears 65 on the shafts 12 of the turbines. Each of" the inlets 22 is provided with a control valve 66 operated by propellers 62 and V handle 68 connected with link 67 slidably arranged; and having vertical portions 69 provided with'handles 70 pivotally connected so as tobe swingable in a plane at right angles with the link 67,,this connection being effected-by the'pintle pin '71. r A block 72 is fastened to some stationary part ofthe ship, and is formed'with a plurality of vertical grooves 73 of engagement by the handle 70. A bar 74 urges the handle 70 into a groove 73 by virtue of being urged itself rearwardsof springs 75. Normally the gears 47 and 48 are disengagedfrom'the gears 54 and 55, and the valves 7 66 are closed. The operation ofv the device" consists in first turning the wheel 28 for moving the gears 47 and 48 into engagement with gears 54,and 55. Then if the ship is to be steered to the right, the propeller62 must beset into operation. This is done by manu-' ally drawing the handle 7 0 free from its engaged groove 7 3, then moving the handle 7 0" V for operating handle 68 to open the valve 66 whichcontrols the turbines 11 connected to drive the propeller 62. Then the handle 70 propeller 63 is set into action.
is automatically reengaged in a groove 73 to hold its new position. Forsteering the ship to the left, the turbine connected with the -I claim as new and desire to secure by United tates Letters Patent-is:
