In order to prevent the- A usual construction is provided for by an elbow shaped casing, having one arm connected with the fixed section of the steam and the other rotatably connected with escape of pressure and the blowing of'the said last named section out of the casing, it has been usual to provide a. head on the said section within the casing, of the 'casing'to restrain outward movement.
With such a construction, it is necessary to provide an opening in the casing in alinement with the movable section 0 the steam line, to enable the placing of the said section, and the said opening must be of a size to pass the head. The opening is afterwards closed by an suitable means, as for instance a threa ed plug.
This construction is objectionable, theadditional opening and the plug adding to the cost of the joint, and weakening the casing to a certain extent. Furthermore, insertion and removal of the movable section of the steam line is a matter of some difficulty, usually accompanied by damage to the movable section.
One of the prima'ryobjects of" the'present invention is the provision of a swivel joint of the character in question, wherein themovable section of the steam line has a lfiaded connection with the casing, so arranged, however, that the head may be inserted from the outside through the opening in the casing in which it is to be rotatably mounted.
Another object is the provision of means on the movable section of the steam line, en-
and abutting a part I abling it to be turned by an ordinary wrench, thus to prevent injury to the section.
Another object is the provision of a closing cap nut for the packing chamber, so arranged that it may be easily tig tened or loosened merely by the striking of light blows, as for instance with the handor with a hammer.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts-fully described hereinafter, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim appended hereto, it being understod that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the-invention.

The present embodiment of the invention one end of is shown in connection with the head 1 of a bale source of supply,.by means of a pipe 6 having a controlhng valve 7, and is discharges from the head by means of a pipe 8. The pipes 6 and 8 are fixed, and they are connected with pipes 9 and 10 respectively rigid with the head.
It is obvious that because of the swinging connection of the head, a rotatable or swivel joint ,will be necessary between the pipes 69 and 8-10, and in order to conserve the steam supply, the joint should be fluid tight. The joint is the same at both sides of the yoke 4, and but one will be described.
The improved joint comprises a substan tially elbow shaped casmg or housing 11 havmg an internally threaded nipple 12 for connection with the pipe 6 in the present instance, and an externally threaded nipple 13 for connection with a pipe or tubular member 14, which in turn is connected with an elbow 15 on the end of the pipe 9, it being understood that-the same connection is provided for the ipe 10.
The outer en of the nipple 13 is annularly enlarged or chambered as shown at 15 for a purpose to be presently described, and a threaded opening 16 is provided between the chambered portion and the body part of the casing. The end of the pipe 14-is threaded to engage this openin 16, as indicated at 17 and between the t readed portion and the body of the pipe is a plain reduced portion 18, which may be provided for in any suitable manner, as for instance by cutting away the threads. p
The plain ortion 18 is of slightly greater length than the length of the threaded opening 16, so that when this portion of the pipe 14 is within the threaded opening, the pipe 14 may rotate freely without engagement of the threads. That is a slight longitudinal movement of the pipe 14 will be necessary to engage the threads, as for instance when removing the same.
The chamber 15 is designed to receive packing rings of a suitable character indicated at 19, and a collar 20 is seated within the outer end of the chamber, and bears against the outermost packing ring. A cap nut 21 is threaded onto the ni ple 13, the cap nut having an opening for t e pipe 14, and the cap nut bears against the outer end of the collar 20, to compress the packing rings. It will be apparent that the pressure on the rings may be increased or relaxed by nut in the proper direction.
The cap nut is internally enlarged as shown at 22 .to provide an annular chamber about the outer end of the collar 20 asshown in Fig. 2, and the pipe 14 has a polygonalportion 23 near its outer end, the said outer end being threaded as shown at 24 to engage the elbow 15 on the end of the pipe 9; The cap nut 21 has opposite extensions 25 for engagement by a hammer or the like to loosen or tighten the nut, and it also has radial lugs 26 on the circular portion thereof, for engage ment by a suitable tool to replace or remove the nut.
It has been sought to eliminate the additional opening in the casing, and the necessity for passing the movable section through the opening in which it is torotate from within outward, by providing a threaded engagement between the said section and the casing. This construction is, however, open to ob ection in that the threads become worn in use, but more particularly because in the turning the cap sections, said casing insertion of the movable section, the operator has nothing to guide him as to when the section has been fully inserted, and there is great liability to over turning of the pipe section, with a consequent breaking of the threads, resulting in a loose joint, and an increasing liability to blowing out of the movable section.
In the present construction the thread on the movable section provides a head to prevent blowing out of the section, and it is a head of a character such that it may be inserted through the opening in which the section is swiveled. When the plain portion of the section is within the threaded opening of the casing it is centered by the thread of the opening, while freely rotatable. The movement to which the movable section is sub jected is a rocking movement of relatively small extent, so that disengagement by unthreadin is impossible.
It will e apparent from the drawing and description that there'is provided a head on the movable section for engaging within the casing to prevent outward movement of the movable section without hampering the free rotation thereof, but of a nature such that it may be passed through the opening from the outside inward. When once engaged within the casing, however, longitudinal movement is necessary to engage the threads so that further turning movement in the proper direction will release the pipe section.
So long as it is merely oscillated in the movement of the pressing head it cannot become disengaged, nor can the respective threads of the pipe section and easing become engaged.
The improved joint is designed for use with the movable member of a steam garment pressing machine. This member in the present instance is the head, but it is obvious that the construction would be equally applicable to the buck, in case the buck were the movable member.
What is claimed as new is A. swivel joint adapted for use in the steam line of the movable pressing member of a steam pressing machine, including a casing for connection with the fixed section of the steam line having an opening for. receiving the movable section, the movable section having a threaded portion at its extremity, and the fixed section a reduced internally threaded opening fitting the thread, the movable section having a plain reduced por-. tion between the threaded extremity and the body of the section of a length to enable the threads of the sections to clear each other, thereby to enable free rotation between the having a sleeve extension coaxial with the threaded opening for receiving a packing and having an internal shoulder at the junction of the sleeve extension with the casing providing an abutment for the packing,
