BAR TWISTER FOR ROLLING MILLS Filed June 22. 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Nov. 12, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE All QLOOKEB, OI CHICAGO, ASSIGNOB TOIN'TMA'IB 130! m arm OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A OOBPORAIION OI ILLUOIS BAR zrwrs'rm FOB ROLLING mm Application fled Jane M, 1m. Serial mi. 200,540. I
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in guides for turning or twlstmg metal bars between successive roll-passes, and consists in the organizations and arrange- 5 ments of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Ihe invention is illustrated in practical embodiment in the-accompanying drawings in which, Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view showthe twister intermediate two successive r -passes; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the parts of the twister of Fi: 1; Fig. 3 is a detail front view of the h of the twister; Fig. 4 is a similar view of t' e guide-holder of the twister; Fig. 5 1s a side view of the guide-block of the tw ster, and Figs. 6 and 7 are detail cross-sect onal views of theguide-block taken respectively on the lines 6-6 and 7-7 in Fig. 5 looking in the direction of the arrows.
In the drawings and the reference numerals 1 and 2 represent two sets or pairs of rolls mounted in suitable housings 3 to form successive passes to roll; metal shapes; the passes may be arranged in line or s1de by side, and may be formed to roll any metal shape of other than circular cross-section, the bar bein used herein for brevity to means and inc udean and all metal shapes of such description. ntermediate the pases a twister is arranged which turns a bar a half between the passes; for example, a flat metal bar 4: comin from a corresponding pass 1 with its wi er faces horizontal will enter the twister in this position and will be given a half turn by the twister so as to I pass therefrom on ed e to the next appropriate pass 2 as shown ln Fig. 1, or vice versa the strip may enter'the twister on edge from the pass 1 and be given a half turnto as from it with its wider faces horizonta to the pass 2 when the asses are relativel so termed. In the form ere shown, the twister comprises a cast metal upri ht body 5 having lateral feet 6 b which it isfiiolted in sition and a longitu inal cylindrical bore which is of larger diameter at its front portion to form a forwardl -facing rear shoulder 8; the
is tapped as at 9 upper portion 0 the bodX cyfind c lguid n a eto receive a set-screw 10.
holder 11 longer than the body 5 fits in the bore 7 and has an inwardly facing shoulder 12 intermediate its ends to abut against the shoulder 8 to take the rearwardly directed thrusts to which it is subjected, and two taps 55 13 and 14 are spaced ninety degrees apart around the circumference of the holder to alternately receive the inner end of the set-' screw so that the holder-can be set in different circumferential positions in the body 60 5. The holder has a. longitudinal bore 15 which is irregular and preferably rectangular in cross-section and is formed with a bellmouth 16 at its outer end which is irregular and preferably shown in Fig. guide-block 17 fits in the bore 15 of the holder, being of corresponding length and peripheral contour and -having a bell-mouth'18, and its outer end is 0 of corresponding outside octagonal contour as shown at 19 to form a spigot to fit into the bell- mouth 1,6 of the holder to hold the guideblock against endwise and circumferential displacement in the holder. The guide-block has a longitudinal central passage 20 which is formed intermediate its ends with a twist or turn of ninety (90) degrees as at 21 so that the bar passing through it is rotated or given oct onal in cross-section as M 4.
a half turn between its entrance into and exit from the guide-block. The passage 20 is irregularly shaped in cross-section to correspond with the contour of the bar being treated, and is here shown as rectangular to accommodate the particular flat-bar 4 illus- 35 trated.
By turning the holder 11 in the body 5 and looking it by the set-screw 10 engaging either the tap 13 or the ta 14 the guide-block can be rotated or turne to present the front or receiving end of its passage 20 with its longest dimension either horizontal or vertical, so that the bar 4 may enter it either ilatwise or on edge as the character of the leading rollpass 1 may require; the bar in its travel through the guide-tube will be turned by the twisted portion 21 of the passage 20 to discharge therefrom on edge or flatwise accordlngly. By removing the ids-block 17 here shown an the simllarly s aped bl ck having a suitably twisted passage of different shape or dimensions may be substituted; when a change of blocks is made it is necessaryonly to withdraw one block from the holder and 5 insert another therein, as the endwise slipjoint formed by their lengthwise disposed interlocking parts enables the change to be made without manipulating any separate retaining devices, and in any case the interlocking parts co-operate to automatically position the block to present the entry end of its twisted passage in the desired circumferential position in relationto the associated roll-pass, and to afi'ord both lengthwise and radially opposed hearings to positively hold the block against longitudinal and circumferential displacements. Furthermore, the means employed to lock the holder in the body also defines the circumferential adjustment of the guide to present the entry end-of its twisted passage in different circumferential positions corresponding with difierent roll-passes.
I claim: 1. A bar twister comprising a body, a guide-block mounted in the body and having a twisted passage, and interlocking slip-joint connections between said body and block constructed to interengage when the block is seated endwise in the body and hold the block against rotation and longitudinal displacement on the body. 2. A bar twister comprising a body, a .guide-holder mounted in the body, a guideblock seated in the holder and having a twisted passage, and interlocking connections between said block and holder constructed to interengage when the block is seated endwise in the body and hold the block against rotation and longitudinal displacement in the holder. 3. A rolling-mill bar twister comprising a body having a longitudinal bore, a guideholder rotatable in the bore and fixed therein against longitudinal displacement, means to lock the holder in different circumferential positions in the bore, and a guide-block seated in the holder and provided with alongitudinal twisted passage of irregular cross-sectional area.
4. A bar twister comprising a body having a longitudinal seat, a guide-holder rotatably mounted in the seat and having a bell-mouth of irregular cross-section, means to lock the holder in different positions of rotation in its 5 seat, and a guide-block seated in the holder and having a twisted passage and formed at one end to interlock with said bell-mouth.
5. A bar twister comprising a body having a longitudinal seat, a guide-holder rotatable c9 in the seat and having circumferentially spaced taps, a screw on the body arranged to engage the taps to lock the holder in different positions of rotation in said seat, a v guide-block seated in said holder and having a nections between the front ends of said holder and block. a
6. A bar twister comprising a body having a longitudinal bore, a screw, on the body, a
guide-holder rotatable in the bore and having I F3 twisted guide-passage, and interlocking con-
