Description

Nov 12, 1929. TEMPLE 1,735,221
APPARATUS FOR APPLYING MEDIGAMENTS TO THE LIPS Filed Sept. 25, 1928 gwuantoo Patented Nov. 12 1929 UNITED STATES OLIVE-R TEMPLE, O1? DYERSBURG, TENNESSEE APPARATUS FGR APPLYING MEDICAMENTS TO THE LIPS Application filed September 25, 1928. Serial No. 308,180.
This invention relates to apparatus for applying medicaments to the lips, and more particularly to a device especially intended for use in the application of remedies during the period when the patient is asleep.
An important object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character which not only affords a means for maintaining the remedy in contact with the infected part but which likewise serves to prevent the infected part from coming in contact with an uninfected part.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be employed simultaneously in the application of remedies to both the lips and gums and which is reversible, so that it may be employed in connection with either the upper or lower lip.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my in vention and wherein Figure 1 is a sectional View showing an ointment applicator constructed in accordance with my invention applied to the lower Figure 2 i a bottom plan View of the appli- 30 cator prepared for use;
Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof partially in section.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates a strip of metal which is thin and readily bendable and has the quality of retaining its shape when bent and 11 indicates a substantially semi-spherical cloth pad formed at one end to provide a pocket 12 for the reception of the strip 10. The strip 10, when shaped, may be flat but in use, is arcuately curved to conform to the shaping of the outer surface of the gums opposing the lip which is to be treated. \Vhen the bending has been completed, it will be found that the cloth strip 11 may be bent downwardly at the outer face of the curve thus produced and will retain its bent shape, so that when the device is placed in the mouth between the lip and gum, this cloth pad will maintain its position over the lip. Obviously, by placing a remedy upon the surface of the pad which opposes the lip when in applied position, the lip will receive a supply of the remedy constantly and, at the same time, the pad will serve to maintain this lip separated from the other or uninfected lip. The bar forms a secure and comfortable anchor which will not affect the rest of the wearer and the entire structure may very obviously be cheaply produced. The bar may be caused to conform to either the upper or lower gum surface and, where desired, a pair of the bars may be employed at the same time without interference with one another.
By placing remedy upon an outer face or both outer faces of the pocket 12, this remedy may be applied to the gums or the opposed portion of the lip or both.
Since the construction hereinbefore set forth is capable of a certain range of change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of the invention, I do not limit myself to such specific structure except hereinafter claimed.
I claim i 1. In an apparatus for applying remedies to the lips orgums, a cloth pad having connected thereto along one edge thereof an arcuately curved bar adapted to fit between the gums and the adjacent surface of the lip and to support the pad in position between the lips. i
2. In an apparatus for applying remedies to the lips or gums, a cloth pad having connected thereto along one edge thereof an arcuately curved bar adapted to fit between the gums and the adjacent surface of the lip and to support the pad in position between the lips, the pad having a pocket along its edge in which the bar is disposed Apparatus for applying ointment to the lips or gums comprising a pad to extend between the lips and a bar connected to the pad along one edge thereof, said bar being formed of readily bendable nonresilient material to permit ready shaping thereof to the space between the gums and an adjacent lip.
4. Apparatus for applying ointment to the lips or gums comprising a pad to extend between the lips and a bar connected to the pad along one edge thereof, said bar being formed of readily bendable nonresilient material to permit ready shaping thereof to the space between the gums and an adjacent lip, the pad having a pocket along one edge thereof within which said bar is disposed.
5. Apparatus for applying ointment to the lips comprising a pad adapted to extend between the lips and an arcuate support for the pad adapted to be positioned between a lip and the adjacent gum. v
6. Apparatus for applying ointment to the lips comprising a pad adapted to extend between the lips and an arouate support for the pad adapted to be positioned between a lip and the adjacent gum the pad having a pocket housing the bar and maintaining the same against contact With the lips or gum.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix signature.
OLIVER TEMPLE.
