BOTTLE A'ND OPENER.

Application filed February 14, 1928.

This invention relates to a bottle of the type provided with a removable cap and an opener secured to the bottle for removing the cap.

The principal object of the invention is to provide each bottle with its own opener so that convenient means will always be at hand for removing the cap.

Another important object of the invention is the provision of a modified bottle of such a nature that an opener may be accommodated within a recess in the same so that the opener will not be liable to be accidently separated from the bottle during shipment.

To this end the invention contemplates forming a bottle with a depression or recess in some part of its surface area to substantially conform to and contain an opener. It is preferable to make this depression of a depth sufficient to prevent the opener from projecting beyond the bottle surface but this is not essential. This opener receiving recess may be formed in the neck, body or bottom, wherever most convenient. In small bottles or in those having more or less irregular contours, it may be necessary in some instances to curve the opener either laterally or longitudinally or both to conform to this irregularity. When the bottle wall is of sufficient thickness, this curving of the opener may be avoided by providing a plane bottomed recess.

Various means may be utilized for securing the opener in the recess, such as a label or paper strip partially or wholly overlying the opener and either entirely encircling the bottle or not as desired.

The invention further consists in the novel arrangements, construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the drawings in which:

I have shown in Fig. 1 a bottle 1 having a cap 2, the bottle having a tapered neck portion 3. WVithin this neck is located a recess 4 preferably formed therein during the bottle manufacture. In the case shown, the recess is of sufficient depth to completely contain an opener 5. The opener is shown in Fig. 2 as sli htly curved laterally and in Fig. 1 curved l ongitudinally in order to more nearly conform to the bottle contour and thus require less of a recess depth.

A tab or label 6 overlies the opener 5 and passes completely around the bottle neck. As the recess 4 substantially conforms to the opener contour, side movement of the opener is prevented and the tab 6 prevents the opener from dropping out of the recess.

In F ig.3 the opener 5 is shown located in the bottle body wall. As before the recess conforms substantially to the contour of the opener.

In Fig. 3 the recess is provided with a substantially plane bottom 7 and the opener is not curved either laterally or longitudinally.

As shown, the opener 5 is secured in the recess by means of a small wire or cord 9 completely encircling the bottle, the ends being twisted as at 10. The opener is thus securely fastened in its recess.

In Figs. 5 and 6 the recess is shown in the bottle bottom with a perfectly fiat opener 5 completely contained therein. A small tab 11 pasted over the opener and to the bottle bottom secures the opener in place.

In all cases it will be noted that it is desirable to so arrange the parts that no portion of the opener projects out of its recess and beyond the bottle surface.

I claim:

A bottle having a curved outer wall surface, said curved surface having a peripheral concave portion, a recess in said concave outer Wall surface, said recess being disposed longitudinally of the bottle, an opener of flat sheet metal Within said recess, said recess 5 having a fiat bottom and being of greater depth at its ends than at its center whereby the ends of said opener are protected and protect the user by being more deeply embedded With respect to said outer surface than is the central portion of the opener, and a narrow 10 tie passing entirely around the concavity in the bottle and over the relatively exposed central portion of the opener to hold the opener in place.
